A place for self reflection.
Time

I’m really stressing out over something that I shouldn’t be stressing out over. I’m taking a ton of AP classes this year (and last year) which is difficult but challenging in a fun way…usually. Last year I got a 4.0. This year I have all A’s except one class. I have worked my ass off and I’m gonna be probably ending up with a B+. I know this shouldn’t mean anything since most people I know would love to have even a B in some of their classes. I’m just very worked up over this sort of shit and my parents expect a lot out of me. The most relieving thing is when I remind myself that it literally doesn’t mean shit that I’m getting a B+ in a class. All my friends are nice and try to get a good laugh out of how stressed I always am about my grades. But in a way, now I’m kind of happy that I’m losing the 4.0. A 3.95 GPA with less worrying about perfection sounds a helluva lot better.

I apologize for ranting about a god damn B+. I’m surprised I didn’t delete this post because of how much of an idiot I sound like. I just really don’t want to have people not think I’m smart just because I got one B+.

I would go with B. Put the prequel trilogy all together. If you like Q2, then do that. Personally, I would do all Hal’s. His Phantom Menace feels like not only an improved version but a version that still feels like a complete movie.

Yeah, maybe a full HAL would be the best (with B). Mainly 'cause Q2 do not really sit well as a whole in the “machete”.

As best I can remember, Q2’s prequel edits have the goal of preserving the Vader reveal, which is inconsequential when your doing machete order. Good luck! I hope you enjoy your marathon 😃

FULL REVIEW:

I just watched the edit. I love the original trilogy, including ROTJ. I think it has some of the best moments in the saga. However, the movie is make weaker than the others by some key “distractions”, when the movie should be about the Rebels winning and Luke and his father. These distractions are:

-Jedi Rocks/Lapti Nek/dumb stuff in Jabba’s palace
-Han’s jealousy of Leia, which makes him seem immature and lame.
-And Ewok silliness in the final battle.

Your edit takes care of the all three perfectly. I like the Ewoks, and I like how they’re cute. But when (in the battle) they somehow take out armoured stormtroopers, it kinda kills suspension of disbelief.

The edits you made in the Endor ground battle scenes are basically perfection. It’s completely believable. Han and Leia get trapped in the bunker, C3PO and the Ewoks realize this and get help. They arrive as a distraction when the rebels are brought outside with their hands up. The Imperials go after them, and get a nasty suprise from the Ewok’s bow&arrows. From there on out, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and the rebels fight the fight and get their job done. The Ewoks do their part and run around and distract the empire. They try to fight but their sticks and stones just can’t beat the imperials. Finally, Chewie breaks into an AT-AT, does some real damage, Han and Leia get into the base, and the rest is history.

Great job! Except for the standard cleanup editors always do in v2.0, I don’t think anything should be changed regarding the Endor ground battle.

Regarding the rest of the film that I haven’t mentioned, I could really care less. There are a couple lines you cut out I think could have been left in. There are also 1 or 2 lines that I think would have been better left out. But others would probably disagree, and in the end it doesn’t really matter. Good luck with whatever cleanup you do in v.2.0

What really matters are the “3 pillars of weakness in ROTJ” that I went over above. You’ve taken care of all three.

Thank you so much of the praise YodaFan! You’ll be happy to hear that absolutely nothing so far will be changed in the ground battle on Endor. Once 2.0 is completed, the process of getting this onto fanedit.org and myspleen.

Again, thank you everyone for all the thoughts, compliments and suggestions 😃

I really can’t believe that people are defending the prequels as decent watchable movies on this thread.

It’s as if people have opinions that are different than yours. Woah!

Thank god someone reminded him this.

Hands down, my biggest issue with our forum is how much people get disrespected for not agreeing with a certain opinion. If someone hates Rogue One, they get bashed. I loved it, but don’t give a crap if someone else hates it. I discuss it with them to understand why they disliked it, which results in a civil and respectful discussion.

And the hate that prequel lovers get is ridiculous. I think episodes 1 and 2 are god awful films that will make most humans cringe every other scene. But I have no issue with someone liking or loving them. I just hope we can all quit the bashing of the people who like the new Disney movies and quit with the bashing of prequel lovers. We should create a forum where everyone’s opinion is respected and not throw a hissy fit whenever someone disagrees with you.

Sorry for the rant but I’m fed up with seeing this sort of behavior in so many threads.

I see your point, but you do have to admit that the prequels are objectively bad and the other films objectively are not.

There’s a huge problem assuming that there is an objective way of grading movies. An objective scientific fact measures something that is absolutely correct for all people.

For example, Apples fall when dropped from your hand on earth. They fall at a rate of 9.81 m/s^2. But with movies, if they are also objective, then that would mean that there is a definitive grade for every movie. A definitive, universally correct scale as to measure the merit of every film. Who decides this grade? What does that mean for the value of other opinions?

Bottom line is…most people do accept that certain things make a movie great. Such as good characters, good story and well written dialogue. But what people consider to be good characters and story differs so much between each person and each movie for an individual. Everybody goes in with different things they want from a movie. So obviously, they experience the film a different way. None of them are wrong. They simply disagree. I’m with you on the prequels. Most people actually are. But there is no such thing as an objective measurement of how good a movie is that applies to everyone. That’s the key thing.

RLM also glossed over most of TFA’s most controversial faults and ignored things they complained about endlessly in their Ep. I - III reviews, so I don’t really hold what they have to say in high regard.

Yep… but they are funny.

(and I love that now they don’t like the second Disney Wars - and are less and less praising TFA - almost everybody here goes “they can go to hell these RLM guys, they don’t know jack about SW😃)

I can only think of about 3 people here who now bash RLM because they don’t like the new Star Wars. That’s hardly everybody here.
I liked R1 very much and I still love RLM.
There are a couple people here who seem to worship TFA on a TFN level though.

I absolutely adore RLM despite the fact that I really disagree with them on Rogue One. I find their entire basis for hating the movie completely bogus. But I still love watching their videos constantly. They’re genuinely funny people who make good content, and I happen to disagree with them a lot on a certain movie. It’s called being ok with other people disliking something you like. Some people just choose to automatically respond to such opinions with hate and ignorance.

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?

Sony stated why they didn’t use the newly remastered mixes for the CD release that coincided with the digital collection. They said and I paraphrase “Younger generations grew up on the SE scores so we decided to use the SE mixes for the CD release” youtube.com/watch?v=YuH7uznb2bU. But now I guess they decided to release the original soundtracks for streaming. I think this is a sign of cool things to come bois

I think that the original versions of the movies are restored in 4K and will be released sometime this year. Possibly an announcement at Star Wars Celebration.

Disney would be so smart to live stream a huge mystery panel where they unveil new blu-rays with updated special features, bonus commentaries, beautiful original artwork and most of all…the unaltered original Star Wars trilogy remastered in beautiful 4K. Not to mention if they made a new special edition with the offensive SE elements removed and even better CGI and models used to update matte paintings and aged effects. They could preview footage, have a panel afterwards speak about the restoration process and what it means to fans. And then just so it’s all worth it, plop on a 150 dollar price tag for the full set in its glory. And hell yah I would pay for something like that.

Please Disney…read this post and follow exactly as I instructed. You will make so much damn money and you will make us fans so damn happy.

What do you HATE about the EU?

I just finished reading the Splinter of the Mind’s Eye comic adaptation, and while it was okay, I hated how not only does it establish that Luke had actually fought Vader prior to The Empire Strikes Back, but that he was able to best him in combat? What!? How come he is better at fighting before getting Force training? Why do Luke and Vader never refer to this occurance in Empire? Also, why doesn’t Luke use the Kaiburr crystal or ask Halla for help in The Empire Strikes Back? It really messes with the continuity.

Splinter of the minds eye hands down is my most hated piece of EU. As a kid when I read about it in the pre-Disney ultimate visual guide, which detailed the events of the book. And I was soooo confused as a kid. It just messes with so much continuity! That hands down is one of the best pieces of EU that I love was made non-canonical.

Are you suggesting that 2oth C. Fox might be cracking down because something official is on the horizon? Interesting prospect indeed. Why else let it sit for five years and all of the sudden have it pulled?

True true. Could be exciting. And good news is that you can still watch this amazing documentary on NJVC’s set in its best quality.

Return of the Jedi - Remastered (Released)
Time

After re-watching the ending of version 1.0, I think I’d like to remove one change I made. I added the death star preparing to fire but the laser dematerializing once they start hitting the reactor but after watching it a few times, a couple clear issues remain:

-When it dematerializes, I have to reverse the video of the laser revving up. In that shot, the Death Star is moving towards Endor. So when I cut to it dematerializing, the Death Star is moving back the opposite direction.
-And after watching this sequence again and again, I realize that the flow of it just doesn’t work with the laser inserted. It revvs up and is given far too much time to fire before Lando and Wedge blow the reactor.

Taking this issues into account, I feel it best to revert to the original sequence of Lando and Wedge destroying the reactor which I feel is just as awesome in the original cut.

(including Vader in his prime)

I have to insist, but the weird guy killing random rebels with a red lightsaber at the end is not Vader: it’s Jason Voorhees wearing a Vader halloween costume (Rogue One is the best Friday the 13th since Jason X !). So yep, you can end up with something far superior by removing the shitty parts: that’s the spirit of fanediting. If you love the film as it is, don’t change it. The slim thing is not even that terrible compared to the lack of good characters…

Vader is Jason anyway. He is an almost impossible to stop semi-supernatural, angry, scarred monster who kills people.

Which is why when you hear of a character with that sort of a reputation and don’t see him prove such claims, it is so amazing to see the character live up to such a reputation. Like I’ve said before…that Vader scene is one of the most satisfying cinematic moments of all time for me.

Palindromic Gas said:

I’ve just finished your edit and many of your cuts are seamless, especially when Lando and Wedge destroying the reactor was intercut with the Death Star preparing to fire and it was funny watching the ewoks be useless seeing the Empire just massacre them. There was one rough transition, which was the trimmed shot of Lando lowering his mask which suddenly cut to the exterior of Jabba’s Palace. This could be fixed by showing Chewie be led to his then cut to the outside of the Palace. Also since you cut LApti Nek it does create a plot hole for later when Threepio tries to warn Luke, even though he didn’t witness Jabba’s servant fall down the pit. So you could either somehow include the servant be killed after the Harmonica Turtle’s song, remove Threepio’s warning to Luke or unfortunately reinstate Lapti Nek.

All good suggestions. I’ll see what I can do with these two things.

Since this is Version 1.0 of the edit, I’ll suggest some further changes for Version 2.0:

  • Remove Boush’s subtitle “I want fifty thousand. No less.” Since Threepio translates it straight after. Similar to how Q2 had done it.

This will now be implemented in Version 2.0.

  • Trim Luke and Han’s dialogue scene on the skiff so it ends on Han saying “you’re going to die here, you know”

As long as there is no objection, I also like this idea for Version 2.0.

  • Remove Han saying “3PO, tell that slimey piece of worm ridden filth” because it is strange for Han to say that, so instead he says “He’ll get no pleasure from us.”

I’ll keep this as a pending change. I personally am fine with Hans dialogue there but am willing to cut it if more people also don’t like this line.

  • Remove the burp from the Sarlacc

If you mean the burp after Boba dies then I can see if this works. I’ll add it to my pending changes.

  • During the shuttle scene where the clearance codes are being transmitted, you can remove some of Han’s dialogue “It’ll work… it’ll work”, “Now don’t get jittery Luke…” and “I told you it was going to work…”, So it focuses on Luke and Vader sensing each other. It can edited like:
    Han: Transmission commencing
Leia: Now we’ll find out if that code is worth the price we’ve paid
    Luke: Vader’s on the ship
    CUT to Vader question Piett
Luke: I’m endangering the mission, I shouldn’t have come.
Then the scene could play out as normal minus Han’s “I told you it was going to work, no problem.”

I actually played with this scene and did cut one of Hans lines but the other ones I felt were too hard to remove without abrupt audio cuts. I’ll give this a try again.

  • Trim everyone just standing around the meat, so it could be like Chewie goes straight for it.

I’ll test this out. Sounds like a good idea to me.

  • Remove Leia’s “I know. Somehow I’ve always known” because her being speechless is a better reaction

This one is tough because I actually really like this line. It kind of calls back to her feeling Luke’s cry for help at the end of Empire Strikes Back. It’s just the kiss that makes that awkward but I’m fine with the line. I’d like to see if more people want this change. If so, then I will implement it.

  • When Threepio calls out to the stormtroopers, remove the imperial officer saying “bring those two over here” since they only saw Threepio.

Good call. This will be implemented in Version 2.0.

  • When the death star first fires remove Lando saying “That blast came from the Death Star. That thing’s operational” since its unnecessary.

I’m fine with it. His delivery is really charismatic and I have never had a problem with it but if more people want this gone, then I will cut it.

  • Finally, you can release a separate version with the Yub Nub ending instead of the Victory Celebration ending.

This will be done for Version 2.0 also.

Return of the Jedi - Remastered (Released)
Time

K everyone, this is how I will decide on changes for Version 2.0:

On the first post of the thread I will add two new sections. “Confirmed changes for Version 2.0” and “Pending changes”.

For example, If I am testing out a change which I like but might or might not work, then it will go under “pending changes”. And if I know a change will work and I like the suggestion, I will put it under “confirmed changes”. And by the way, any changes on the confirmed list can still be removed if enough people disagree with the change.

Everyone please send in all feedback! All suggested changes will be combined from both this forum and my thread over at fanedit.org. I will respond to each suggestion and try to hopefully finetune this into a better edit than it was before.

Watched your ending celebration edit on vimeo and have some feedback for you. The audio editing was pretty abrupt to my ears. I’d recommend trying to use the soundtrack and start the music later with a fade in. You’ll need to produce your own crowd noise effects, but it will sound better. Also, I thought I saw part of another scene as the wipe transition happened.

Thank you for the advice! I don’t know if I’m skilled enough to produce my own crowd noise but perhaps I could just remove the “wesa free” line with Q2’s edit. He already granted me permission to utilize his edit. Have you seen his version of the ending celebration with the “wesa free” audio removed. It sounds pretty good to me.
