Everyone’s favorite scene in TLJ was when Leia gave Rey a medal that said “Best Jedi Ever.” Truly amazing moment.

yeah because that’s exactly what i meant

Well then I guess I have no idea what you meant, like usual.

Are you kidding? Sometimes it’s like you people don’t want to even acknowledge the other side of something despite Collipso being pretty darn clear.

It becomes less and less fun coming to this part of the forum when it feels like an echo chamber of shutting down criticism of the ST.

why would rey even need a teacher though? she’s the best jedi ever and she’s only known the force for about a week. no training was required so far, i don’t see why we’d change things now.

Rey for the most part is a poorly written character. More when it comes to TFA, since TLJ gave her an emotional conflict but the real issue is her lack of need for any actual jedi training.

I would have been fine with his treatment in TLJ if he wasn’t killed off. It was very satisfying to see him finally not be a grumpy hermit, and be the Luke Skywalker I knew and loved. Problem is, we only got to see the real Luke Skywalker for like 5 minutes. 5 epic minutes, but still. I wanted to see more of his interactions and responses to various situations when he was truly in the fight against the First Order.

Disney empowered alt right trolls at the end of the day.

James Gunn made some terrible, just terrible tweets. I was actually really surprised at how abhorrent some of them were. However…

They were not only made around a decade ago, but James Gunn on his own accord, apologized profusely six years ago to the public. I think it is reasonable to believe that James Gunn has grown as a person based upon his and others words.

Disney did the wrong thing.

EDIT: The whole situation reminds me of when Sam Seder was wrongly fired from MSNBC, as the corporation went with a knee jerk reaction instead of actually doing their research. Seder got hired back once MSNBC regained their sanity. I hope the same can happen with James Gunn. The Guardians movies really are something special in the MCU.

How about a third option, where you go with an unfamiliar plot, and just create an original story not driven by either satisfying or subverting expectations. Both your options rely heavily on what the audience knows, and in order to subvert expectations you still have to first follow the familiar trajectory. Consequently, the movie still feels very familiar, despite the barrage of twists.

My two options were for if they began with the “familiar scenarios”, which they did in TFA. Once they did that, then it seems like those two options were really the only ways they could have gone.

But yeah, I like the idea of just starting with a new scenario altogether. No empire vs. rebels. No family member that has turned to the dark side. No old Jedi mentor on a remote planet. And so on. With the old ideas, the “subversion” feels like driving down a familiar road and making a left instead of the usual right. With new ideas, it’s like driving into a different town altogether where we have no idea what paths lie ahead; I would’ve liked that more, if executed well.

I agree, that TFA didn’t make it easy for RJ to come up with something original, but I also believe there were other options available, that would have resulted in a far more original story for TLJ.

For one both the New Republic, and the FO suffered a huge blow, and should have been severely weakened by TFA’s events. There’s absolutely no reason why we should arrive at the Empire vs rebels scenario again. In stead we could have had two factions struggling to survive in a level playing field.

Rey’s sudden Force powers have huge implications for the Star Wars universe with the Force balancing the scales in Luke’s absense. This could have been explored along with questions like “Is the Force sentient?”. Snoke could have played a part in this, since his sudden rise/awakening could have followed from the Sith’s destruction, rather than be incidental. In stead it’s glossed over, and Luke acts like it was always like this (powerful light, powerful darkness), when it wasn’t.

The Knights of Ren in TFA appeared to represent a clear break from the Sith’s rule of two, where Rey might actually have to square off against a dozen Force users, yet TLJ simply reverts back to the Sith master/apprentice dynamic.

So, in my view TLJ closed a lot of doors opened by TFA to more original story avenues in order to be clever with twists. While this kept the audience on their toes, it still resulted in a highly derivative narrative, where gimmicks are used to keep it interesting.

Great points here.

Oh, fair point. This strikes me as one of those things that feels like a hurdle by virtue of being a function of a fan edit, but would readily have been received and defended were it a feature of the original film.
No way to know for sure, but that’s my suspicion and by that criteria, I like it. 😃

I agree with ya Hal. I think it works.

I don’t think it’s smart to reference Luke looking for the Jedi temple since clearly it was more of him wanting to find a place to hide out and die. When Han says it, in context of TLJ, it can kind of be interpreted as a vague rumor rather than what really drove Luke away.

I would keep the first paragraph from your last crawl but just tweak a few words here and there. I really liked what you were doing there. I also still love your third paragraph, especially the version from the last crawl.

Now the second paragraph, that is what is hard to deal with. I personally think introducing the super weapon is necessary in this paragraph.

Tomorrow I will put together a crawl that is mainly your first and third paragraphs from your previous crawl, with a reworked second paragraph that still introduces the super weapon.

goodness, i think i am gonna check out too. now we are saying that because one real life general doesn’t like what they did in star wars, that makes it bad? HAH. you can find a real life general to say that everything that happens in real life is bad too, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. SMH.

Did you read the article? What’s so shocking about someone using his real life experience on military leadership to make an assessment of how a character behaves in a movie, and whether such behaviour in a real life situation would constitute good leadership? These characters are presented as role models to an extend, and people identify with them. It seems to me, that someone with actual expertise on military leadership would have a more informed opinion, than the average person, but I guess that only matters, if the opinion is favourable to TLJ, like for example when a physicist states Holdo’s kamikaze act would be physically plausible in their “expert” opinion.

You don’t even have to base your argument on a military context to show that Holdo is a bad leader. Bad workplace managers exhibit the same traits. I recoiled at her response to Poe’s questions. Is that how you inspire confidence and loyalty? Dressing down your subordinates and pulling rank?

Even brash, cocky people like Poe are usually well-meaning and only need appropriate outlets for their energy. I always do my best as a manager to maintain the delicate balance between keeping my employees informed and empowered, and still making it clear who’s in charge when the time comes to make a final decision. If I ever spoke to an employee like Holdo did to Poe, they’d be right to lack confidence in my leadership abilities, and if I had a manager who talked to me that way, I’d be looking for a new job. Not an option in the military, unfortunately (well, I guess Poe considered mutiny an option, and I was kind of rooting for him after seeing what a dickhead Holdo was).

I absolutely agree. I also believe one of the main issues here is, that the entire sequence to me is symptomatic of weak writing, since the writer’s intentions are not clear. Are we supposed to recoil at Holdo’s responses towards Poe, or is it RJ’s intention to sympathise with Holdo, since Poe has shown himself to be irresponsible? Why does Holdo treat Poe this way to the point that it results in a mutiny, only to tell Leia, that she likes him later? Why would she treat someone she apparently likes, and respects this way, to teach him a lesson? If so, is teaching Poe a lesson really worth endangering the entire rebel fleet by letting things spin out of control? These are some of my issues with this entire sequence, even if we agree Holdo is a bad leader, was it RJ’s intention to have her come across as such? If so, why does the entire sequence culminate in Poe realizing he was wrong about her? It seems RJ wants us to side with Poe, and experience the lesson through his eyes, but in my opinion Poe’s actions are justified, considering the situation, and her obvious poor grasp on the situation. As such, it doesn’t matter, if she had the greatest plan in the world, since her poor leadership almost resulted in that plan never becoming a reality. If so, why does the movie present the entire situation, as if she was right all the time, and he was wrong? Surely they shared responsibility for this entire fiasco?

This was very well written and put into words how I feel about the Poe/Holdo subplot.

isn’t it overall too bright? and aren’t some specific shots a bit too bright? for example, from the second to the third shots in the bottom row there’s a big difference, and the third shot looks a bit too bright, imo. you may even be losing some detail. or is it supposed to be that way?

Interesting, I kind of felt this way myself with a few shots. But I think it makes sense from what Dre said about maintaining accuracy in regards to the print.

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

I am honestly somewhat mixed on the movie by now.

I have grown to really dislike what they did with Luke but at the same time, a lot of the risks it took did pay off for me. I loved what they did with Snoke and Rey’s parentage. The writing was really brilliant in some areas as well when it came to Kylo and Rey’s interactions. Overall, I think it is a very good movie.

I just have some major issues with the direction they went with. Actually quite similar to how Jay described his feelings on the sequel trilogy. So I do kind of agree with Frink here. I enjoy the movie far less than I maybe could because it went in a direction that I found unsatisfying. But that direction also connects with many other people besides myself.

Neverar, I really like the direction that your new crawl is heading in. The first paragraph is pretty good but I would want something a little different for the line “some in the Republic”, it just sounds off. Maybe the crawl could instead refer to the political leaders of the republic. Something like “Many senators of the Republic have begun to consider a return to imperial rule.”

The second paragraph is also quite good but feels a little clunky since it is just one long sentence that goes on for a while. The one part that makes it feel a little convoluted is the mention of the Superweapon. I guess the best way to describe how I feel is that the crawl at that point is talking about a secret extremist group, then all of sudden something about a superweapon, and then back to the search for the Last Jedi. The information just feels a little crowded.

The third paragraph is PERFECT. I really like your wording and overall choice of vocabulary. It feels really grand and communicates where the story is currently at.

Sorry if any of my feedback there did not make much sense. Best of luck with everything, the edit looks great!

i think you should go with one of neverar’s crawls.

also, are you doing any sort of color correction to the movie?

Thanks for your input on the crawl. After some consideration, I think I will be using one of Neverar’s crawls.

I also maybe could apply a color correction but it would have to be someone else’s since I am clueless on color correction myself. Luckily for the Last Jedi, Dre has given out a great looking LUT.
