After seeing it for a second time, I am set on the fact that I will be doing a pretty comprehensive edit of this. The stuff I like in this film, hits on ALL cylinders for me personally. But the Canto Bight stuff just made me so angry this time around and the runtime of the movie did wear on me. What the Last Jedi needs is a tight and focused edit.

My full idea for the ENTIRE finn/rose subplot is the following:

  1. Finn says that they surely cannot get past the shield. Poe raises his head as if he has an idea. We get the Maz scene. I really don’t have any problem with this scene like others. Maz is shown to always be caught up in something. It further connects both films and we get a great joke for me where she kind of gets sexual and just makes everyone uncomfortable. This stays for logic sense and for my appreciation of it.
  2. Then we have our first scene of Canto Bight. I would cut down as many weird shots of aliens, champagne, and jokes as possible. Sadly, the public property joke has to stay since that’s the reason they get put in a cell. I also would cut the entire part where Rose talks about the fathiers. Overall, just making this scene as quick as possible.
  3. Once they’re in the cell, cut the joke about not needing DJ’s help. Like RogueLeader suggested, we cut from DJ walking out the cell and them following, to the ship leaving. You would flip the shot of Finn and Rose leaving the cell to show that they went the same direction and axe her line of “This way” so it feels less like they went on some detour and rather that they followed him. This would get rid of the entire fathier chase sequence.
  4. We next see them on their way back. This scene stays intact.
  5. After this basically everything would be the same except cutting the ironing joke and cutting BB-8 in the ATST. Also I would cut them riding on top of the ATST with BB-8 and after Finn defeats Phasma, it would cut to their ship escaping the burning hangar bay.

Hopefully this would make for a much shorter subplot. If there are any ideas to make an even more radically cut down version of this that sacrifices less screen time then I would love to hear it out. Anything to mitigate this part of the film.

quoted for best cutlist to date

Thank you 😃 Though my thread updated cutlist is more radical than this, I’m thinking I will possibly revert back to this plan. I feel cutting more loses too much.

I’ll have to test out all options though and get community feedback.

Does anyone think they know a way to include the lightspeed attack into the Crait section of the film? The idea is that Luke would force send the ship through the Supemacy at some point after he has shown up. The reason for this is two goals I have for my edit which is to move the Yoda scene right before Crait and then also having Luke be the one to do the lightspeed attack.

Disappointing that Shape of Water won. It was an OK movie.

So happy to see Jordan Peele win original screenplay!!! As well as Deakins for cinematography which he so deserves for not only Blade Runner, but for the rest of his career as well. These were my two favorite wins.

And Dunkirk robbed Baby Driver of the sound/film editing pair of awards.

Might be too late to ask, but why are you going to trim down Han Solo’s rescue so heavily? I think that some trims here and there are much needed, but I don’t know if it’s necessary to put it down to 20 minutes. I’m pretty biased towards darthrush’s edit, but it is really a fanedit you could look for inspiration upon. It trimms some things down here and there but his version is not that much shorter from the original, and not nearly as cheesy or stupid.

Have you ever given any thought to making Jabba’s Palace not be in Tatooine? Is that even possible? I think it’d be cool to see a new planet, and it’d take the rehashness away from your RotJ even more.

And if your referring to v1 of my edit, I’d like to add that in v3 I cut Boba Fett from the Sarlacc pit battle and all of Salacious Crumb’s annoying laughing and some other bits too just to trim the silliness even more.

That in combination to other trims and cuts usually make for a nice, streamlined version of the Han rescue. An idea to cut it down further for this edit would be maybe removing the fight with the rancor.

So, as one point in my “fix list” I have “fix Yoda’s face”. I think most of us agree that it was great to see the little puppet, but I’ve seen many say that there was something off about his look, which I agree with. I think it’s mostly due to the mouth which looks a bit different. So for my edit I’ll try to overlay and animate the correct Yoda mouth. Here’s a simple test image (original left, fixed right):

When you end up finishing these scenes, do you plan on releasing them for others to use (crosses fingers)

Absolutely! I’ll make a thread when I start editing and share anything I make that could be useful for others.

Awesome news. The Yoda work you’ve done looks gorgeous and I’d love to use it in the future.

Nice to see you enjoyed it. I also find it very nice. One of the plot threads felt a little cliche but the core of the movie was about her relationship with her mother which was very interesting and touching. Overall, it’s a very genuine film with great acting and though it’s not my favorite of the year, I’d be fine with it taking home Best Picture. I just can’t accept Shape of Water winning.

Why though

I mean of course, whatever wins will win, I just find Shape of Water overrated. Not nearly as much as Darkest Hour which has no place in the nominations whatsoever in my opinion. I find CMBYN or Three Billboards deserving of the award. If they nominated BR 2049 then I’d give it to that in a heartbeat.

If you’re looking for a higher quality version of the interview segment, they uploaded some outtakes here that are partially footage from the review, but mostly unused stuff

If you wanted to Lucas-ize it, you add some of them back in and make Rich Evans walk over Jabba’s tail

Glorious idea.

And I really like the work done so far BlueCopy. I can’t imagine RLM not being thrilled to have someone doing these.

Sgt. Pepper’s - Beatles

All I’ve been listening to the past few days. Typically one of my less appreciated Beatles albums and after many listens and research on the meaning of many songs, I actually like this album a lot more than I used to and keep finding myself coming back to it. Still can’t stand “Within You Without You” 😉

I would prefer not to dig into TFA for Phasma. I’d either leave every beat of her in TLJ or remove her altogether.

As I think about the potential of the deleted scenes… assuming they are usable and presented nicely, that might be the single biggest aid to the film. I think TLJ would have been a superior film if it were presented as a 3-hour Star Wars film and ask the audience to just accept this, rather than both packed to the brim and cut to the bone. Of course, we’ll have to see how it goes, but I hope to give it a running time as merited, not out of concerns of marketability.

But still maintain all of Canto Bight. Why not significantly trim that sequence and then just add the deleted scenes relating to the interesting characters/stories. Would probably end up being a similar runtime but be more focused on the more interesting and substantial plot lines.
