Off Topic is now unmoderated
Time

Alright, I confess that after ignoring you, I'm peeking at what you are saying.  Instead of playing an immature game, you could simply be forthright with who you are, make your point that you feel you've been cheated, and then go about your merry way.  Why should we trust a sock rather than the handle you've used to establish your reputation?  Instead, you discredit yourself and bring unpleasantness to the forum that I looked forward to not having moderated.  We all have our disagreements here, but if you feel you've been cheated, make your case where we can all see you instead of using sick humor and bad language to alienate those you are supposedly trying to convince.

Let's all say something nice about George Lucas. No insults allowed.

Of course, I'm not going to moderate this thing with "Purgatory" or "Excommunication" or "Expelled from the Jedi Order" or anything like that, so I'm 112% positive that this will actually become another George bashing thread.

However...

I feel this site has plenty of those threads and I think it might be worthwhile to look at the good in this guy.  I mean, the GL hate gets pretty ridiculous.  If he changes something, it's so he can make money off new toys.  If he doesn't change something, it's because he doesn't care.  I understand the criticism from members of this site and agree with many of them, though not with the passion that most others here feel.  I also don't like many of the non-Star Wars side of George Lucas.  Nevertheless, I hope that we can get a few nice statements about the guy before SkyJedi comes in and does what he does best and turns it into another lynching thread (no offense Sky ;)

For bonus points (not that I'm keeping track) I would be amazed if you said something about George's more recent work.  If you say, "He gave us Episodes IV and V," that of course counts, but it will be most of your default answers, I suspect.  I'd be quite impressed if you can find good qualities with subsequent Star Wars films.  But in the end, say what you will.

I'll go first:

I, for one, was pleased with most of the lightsaber fighting in the PT.  I know most of you don't like it, but I enjoyed seeing Jedi do cool things.  I'm less keen on the Yoda fights, but other than that, I liked the others, especially Ray Park as Darth Maul.

Your turn...

Are the Jedi so good?

Well, my big complaint about Yoda and the rest of the Council is that they simply had expectations that Anakin would always be at that point where his life and emotions are in check.  Obviously we all try to keep balance in our lives, but we have points where we simply cannot attain that balance.  It seems to me that Anakin was at a low point, and that Yoda and the rest should have provided additional support for him to help him get back on his feet.  Think how differently ROTS would have ended up if Yoda had taken the time to truly provide understanding counsel to Anakin.  Anakin might have relied more on his support than Palpatine's, and in the end may have made the right choice.

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

I used to really love playing Starcraft 1.  But since I never became very good at the game, I really found myself enjoying the creation of clever maps in the game.  I never truly finished it, and the site where I was originally posting it lost all their maps (staredit.net), so my newest version is no longer online anywhere.

Here is an older version.

http://sc.nibbits.com/maps/view/14826/a-grander-vision-v54

I still have the newest version but have never again uploaded it anywhere.  It was to be part of a hypothetical sequel campaign where you find that an interesting character has been crossing Zerg and Protoss.  In this map, these hybrids are called infested zealots who explode with powerful psionic energy and destroy all military units along with them (the idea being that their minds were ruptured in the explosion).  Given the basic system of creating maps, the complicated trigger system I created to allow this to happen led to an interesting game IMHO.  It wasn't perfect, but it showcased an interesting weapon.  Check it out if you love classic SC and want to try something new.  Don't forget to check Use Map Settings.

Are the Jedi so good?

One thing I find interesting is that the Jedi do not truly represent purity and goodness.  There is quite a bit of room for gray area with them.  Now perhaps one might argue that their reasoning serves a higher purpose, but let me relate a few instances to you, simply from the films or the novels of the films.  Qui-Gon seems to be a particular offender.

Qui-Gon lies multiple times, to Anakin ("Checking your blood for infections..."), to Watto ("I've acquired a pod in a game of chance..."), to Shmi (claiming he was a farmer in the novel).

Qui-Gon actually steals the power supply that Anakin uses in his pod from Watto's shop and does not reveal to anyone where it came from.

Obi-Wan lies about Vader being Luke's father.

The Jedi Council tries to manipulate Anakin and never help him with his concerns.

And there is more, including quotes I did not provide.  I'm sure there are even things I'm not remembering at the moment.  Yet these are the polar opposites of the evil Sith.  Kind of interesting to me that the good guys are sometimes questionable.

Yeah, that's pretty idiotic.  What distuinguishes this from requiring all Jews to wear patches?  That's institutionalizing bigotry and prejudice.

On the other hand, read the comments on the Huffington Post regarding any religious topic (given that many members there are non-religious).  Heck, look especially at those dealing with Mormonism, such as Mitt Romney's political campaign, Proposition 8 and the subsequent vandalism of Mormon property, the burning of the Provo Tabernacle last year, etc.  In fact, after hearing about the Tabernacle burning (not the big one that most people know), I immediately went to HP.com and found some of the most bigoted and hateful comments regarding that tragedy.  Looking at it now, many of the worst comments were removed (and it is no small number) by the rare moderation that takes place at "Fountains of Tolerance and Togetherness."  Still, if you are interested, look it up and you'll find there remain quite a few rude and unnecessary statements.  I guarantee you, Puffington Host and its many parasites have a greater influence than this preacher, and they advocate some of the worst bigotry I've ever read, doing it quite openly.  This would be another opportunity for me to toot my horn on my little "Guide" thread.

I agree with you on all your points, Frink.  You seem to be a fair minded agnostic.

I would only make an addition, and that is the point that atheists, agnostics, and anyone else CAN be dangerous as well.  People can go from reasonable to zealots over the most varied issues, even those that do not involve any religious reverence.  Something that a certain OT fellow whose name escapes me seemed unable to accept or confess.

Though we see differently on a number of issues, I'm always happy when I can be respectful as I disagree with my debate opponents.

The Star Wars Pun Game
Time

What advantage do computer programmers in a galaxy far, far away have over our programmers?

Everyone already knows Basic.

My favorite story in 1,001 Tatooinian Nights is Ali Jabba and the 40 Slaves.

The political pressures of being chancellor can make it hard to sleep at night.  That's why I take Valorum.  Sometimes I just get scared of the Bogey Man.  If you aren't careful, he'll come out of your closet and Naboo.

Man, these are just awful.  You all have better puns.  But it's a fun exercise.

Sorry, but I really am proud of the initial post.  I really have no idea how it got so off topic *cough*, but I think I made good points here.  There was no intent to start a fight, and I know I will no longer be fighting with some of the more contentious members.  But if you like the first post, stick around.  If you don't like it, I'm not offended if you don't ever comment.  I promise.
