Problems that came up in the politics thread on 10/26.
Time

Look, there’s no doubt about it, TV’s Frink is one of my favorite posters here. He’s funny and witty and has a good heart.

There’s also no doubt about it that TV’s Frink can be a sarcastic, condescending jerk.

I say both of these comments as a friend. Were you, TV’s Frink, the one making all these sighs, I would probably get irritated at your juvenile behavior. Instead, who I see making these sighs, asking questions that could easily be googled, and thinking very concretely about concepts is Warbler.

Again, I say this as a friend, but Warbler struggles with abstract thinking and creates circular arguments. I can’t help but feel like there is something there that requires an extra level of patience. So I grant him extra patience and don’t engage in conversation the same way I would engage with you, Frink. I expect different understanding and don’t use sarcastic humor as much. I explain things more literally and end things when I feel it is unproductive.

There is a lot of latitude granted to you because of the joys you bring to this forum. Don’t condemn his behavior when your own record isn’t perfect. You both have your quirks and your great qualities. I appreciate you both for who you are, but I also expect different things from you because of who you are.

The Jedi could have just as well been a secret society. Not many outsiders might have known about them in the first place. The whole galaxy police with a big temple on the galactic capital isn’t anywhere in the OT.

It takes very little for a society to erase religion from the minds of the people. Sure, there will be loyal adherents, but if the government suppresses it and disenfranchises believers, then the majority of the people will come to accept the ideology and the faithful will remain alienated, even in a short time. See the USSR.

Episode IV: A Ridiculous Hope
Time

Begin by showing the deleted material of Luke viewing the battle above the Tatooine, damaged film and all. Have the film burn out and over a black screen, have someone say, “Dang it!” Some messing around with the projector and then resume the film without any more deleted scenes.

Alternatively, show the deleted material up till we see Luke arriving at Tosche Station. Then have a voiceover saying something like, “Too much like American Graffiti in space,” in a Lucas-esque voice. Darkness, reel change, and resume film without deleted scenes.

He says in that scene that they created an alternate 1985 and can’t go back to the original timeline without undoing the very creation of the alternate timeline.

Why can’t you, if both timelines exist?

Because they have a time machine, not a universe-hopping machine. They’re stuck in a particular timeline, and if they create a divergent one, they get stuck in the new one until they can undo what caused the creation of the new one. If they had a portal gun like Rick from Rick and Morty, they could just say “Ah, fuck it, too much work” and hop back to the original timeline.

Think of it like train tracks. When they create a divergence, they create a switch on the tracks to a new railway, but they don’t have the tools to simply move the switch back to the original railway to get back to it. They have to dismantle the switch altogether, which means going back slightly further than the creation of the switch and preventing its creation.

Another fun thing to think about: they’re not even trying to go back to the original timeline, since Marty created a new one in BTTF1 when he went back to 1955 and got hit by the car instead of his dad. The timeline created in BTTF2 is actually the third timeline. They’re trying to get back to the second timeline. Which raises the ethical question of, what about the original timeline? Do that version of Marty’s parents think their son went missing/was kidnapped by Lybian nationalists? And what happened to the Marty from timeline 2, the one who remembers growing up with his “fixed” parents? When he went back, did he change something else and wind up coming back to a fourth timeline? Did he get stuck in 1955 while timeline 1 Marty got to go back to the future? Is there a timeline where two, or three, or four Martys show up on 1955 Doc’s doorstep?

none of that makes sense to me. It makes more sense if there is just one timeline that just gets altered over and over again.

Really? None of that makes sense to you? As in 0% of it makes sense to you? That was explained excellently.

His pattern indicates 1-dimensional thinking (in terms of time travel).

I enjoyed the explanation in The Star Trek Encyclopedia that came out before “Trials”: that since the Klingon Empire was an empire, perhaps there were different races that dominated the empire at different points.

I still maintain this idea in my head. Could also be that different subspecies of Klingon are predominate in different parts of the Empire.

Going away? Post so here!
Time

Nearly two years ago, I took a break from this site. I actually did a pretty good job staying away. At the time, my busy life was getting in the way and my interest in participating had faded.

Over the past few months, I’ve slowly allowed myself to post more until I feel it has returned to the time-wasting point it was in the past. I love it here, but life has not slowed down for me over the past several years. Indeed, it has only gotten more and more stressful and busy. The time I spend on here is therapeutic, but unfortunately, I have a hard time preventing cathartic participation from turning into addiction. I need to take another break. I appreciate all the fun and discussion.

Cheer up, guys…

WRONG PICTURE!

And not true. I’m not disappearing…just going into lurker mode. I find I have better self-control when I don’t post and hope for responses. I’ll rear my ugly head from time to time and will probably resume more frequent posting at some point in the future. In the meantime, see you around, guys. 😃
