How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4
Time

Pieces only promote when making a capture in this game, not every move.  Thus, your piece would remain a Silver until it captures one of mine.  Then it would become a Lance until its next capture, whereupon it would again become a Silver.  This makes it easier to predict than Kyoto Shogi, in my opinion.  Plus, I like the promotions better than in Kyoto, as strong pieces remain strong, rather than changing from very strong to very weak and vice-versa.  That said, I wonder if you wanted to alter your first move.

Well, that sounds like it works.  Gotta run in a minute, so I can't reenact it now.  Let me give you my easier version:

10. G*4ii check
I then only have one legal move, as your Gold is protected by the Bishop:
...10. K-2i

11. T*3ii check
Again, I have only one legal move, and my Tokin is defended by the Gold:
...11. K-1ii

12. R*1iii, where it is defended by the Bishop and delivers checkmate. :)

Did you figure out how to get Micro Shogi going?  You can go first.

Hint: You should be able to force a mate beginning at turn 10.

Yeah, I invented it.  I've been kind of quiet about my name, but since no one else reads this thread, I doubt too many will figure it out.  In any case, Micro shogi should have actually come with Kyoto shogi, as I think they're bundled together for Zillions.  And there is a file for Ito Shogi as well, though I am actually working with modified rules, so you may want to make a cheapo set that can easily be modified in order to help me design a better Ito Shogi game.  Are you willing to help me playtest that game?  It may take a few tries to get it right.

Hello all, I'm back! (was: Who is Ignoring You, and Who are You Ignoring?) (was: Who is Ignoring You?))

I personally think you and your girlfriend should march on Washington singing Celine Dion songs while demanding an end to these racist Republican policies that keep her from immigrating to the US.  It's only because of the paleness of her skin that these bigots want to keep her from crossing the border.  You know how they always claim that the Irish Republican Army is trying to infiltrate our country by posing as Canadians!  Next thing you know, she'll get pulled over and questioned about her citizenship because she adds an "Eh" to the end of her sentences, in what amounts to some seriously evil racial profiling!  She should have just crossed the St. Lawrence River like all the other so-called "wetbacks."  At least that way she could end up in a sanctuary city like Pittsburg.

Anyhoo, I gotta get to bed.  Hopefully I'll read your solution tomorrow :)

I'd like to play Micro shogi next.  And I am interested in trying out another variant I haven't even suggested yet.  It's a recently invented game, but one that could be interesting.  It hasn't gained much following yet.  But Micro shogi should come first, as it's style of play really helps when trying out the other.

Ah crap.  As if I hadn't made enough mistakes this game, I moved your king earlier to 5iv.  Now looking back, I see you had him on 4iv.  Well, I'll confess to you now that you could have already forced a mate.  I thought I'd escaped, but with an error like I just made (thinking my G on 3iv was safe), there's no hope now.  At the very least, I would have dropped my last piece as a lance instead of a tokin.  That would have prevented this unequal exchange.  In any case, instead of duking it out for several more turns, I'd rather declare you the victor and challenge you to find out how you could have forced a mate in the last few moves.

Meanwhile, congratulations on beating me!  You played very well, and I'm happy to see you win.  I know I'd made several poor moves, but you took advantage of them and made several good ones, so you should be very proud :)

Well, once again, your position is superior, regardless of material advantage.  Play to your strengths.  Note that I have an isolated pawn (a pawn with no supporting pawns).  Note that my king is very vulnerable from both sides along the white diagonal.  Note that my pieces are not well developed--the reason why bringing out your queen too early is usually unwise, as you spend too much time making her retreat that you don't have time to develop other pieces.  And on that note, my queen will retreat.  Q-g6

I am curious, did you alter your first move?  Not that I mind, but I see the post was edited, and I thought you had moved your tokin to 1iv, not 2iv.  If so, I responded to the wrong move.  If not, I'm a dunce, though I can live with the move I made.

I'm back! No, I did not alter my move, just fixed a fragmentary sentence.

Cool.

Also, what move did you make? You didn't confirm that I had guessed what it was correctly. You called G-2i+L, but either you missed an 'i' or you were looking at the first part of the move on Zillions, which is the square you moved it from, not to. I assumed you meant G-2ii+L and moved accordingly.

You guessed correctly, though I wish I'd moved to either side of that, as I was hoping to promote my piece to a knight and attack your first moved piece.  Oh well.

Yeah, it's a tricky game that requires a lot of planning, but it's really fun.  I am enjoying it much more than in the past, just because you're my playing partner.

Does that mean you enjoy playing a human player, or am I just a great guy? ;)

Both :)

T-4ii+L

 T-3iii+L

I'll make my move when I can.  I'm at work now.  Glad to have you back. :)

something I always wondered about the PT
Time

I'm not a big PT apologist, though I enjoy it more than most here, but I think the answer is in the OP.  As is the case with the way technology appears and the way the whole galaxy appears to be a busy place (vs. the OT where there are more lonely planets and technology actually appears inferior), Tatooine seems to have succumbed to decay.  Before it still wasn't a booming planet, but it was certainly a center for some activity.  By the time the OT rolls around, it's like a planet-wide ghost city.

Note: I am not a fan of this explanation.  In spite of the evil of the Empire, I have a hard time believing there'd be such galaxy-wide technological decline, especially considering that it's not consistent (i.e. bigger ships, Death Stars, etc.).  I can see the lower standard of living, as such is the case in present-day dictatorships, but military technology clearly should be improving, as that is often why dictatorships have such poor people--their military might is disproportionate.
