Disappointing about the blu-ray, but this means that whatever they played at the Plaza Atlanta wasn't the new 4k scan right?

But we really don't know that this wasn't sourced from the new 4k scan, do we?  How could we be sure they didn't just recreate the 2011 version from the new scan?

1. There's no way that Disney would recreate the 2011 coloring and Ben call.

2. The video of the new scan doesn't have the same coloring as 2011.

1.  Why wouldn't they if that is what is on the "official" blu-ray?

2. The Reliance video might not reflect the final work.

I'm just saying I don't think there's any way to know unless we hear from somebody that works at RMW.

 1. You really think that the blue tint and crushed blacks were part of Lucas's vision rather than a side-effect of color correction?

I wouldn't mind Disney doing things like fixing matte lines or using digital set extensions (cell block corridor in SW) or coloring the lightsabers in the occasional shots where they're the white stick. But anything other than fixing the small errors should be left alone

ComputerGeek said:

Same. All im saying is if they decide to "fix" anything it should be errors like that. Nothing as drastic as, say, Hayden Christansen or Greedo shooting first.

Please don't give Disney any ideas about "fixing" or "preserving changes". They "reversioned" Power Rangers and it was awful. Saban saved Power Rangers from being stuck like that, Lucas is not going to save Star Wars from any Disney reversioning.

Original versions first and foremost, preserved and properly restored. NO ALTERATION IDEAS ACCEPTABLE UNTIL THEN!!!!!!!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Exactly, Twister.

As long as a new fan is introduced to the OOT at every chance, we will survive.  The new generation is our responsibility.  They will come into Star Wars with Episode 7.  The Prequel Generation is lost, and they don't matter as long as we get the new generation.  Let them be the sad footnote in the Legacy of Star Wars and maybe we can save some of them.

When:

1. The OOT is released.

2. The three OT movies are marketed as "Star Wars", "The Empire Strikes Back", and "Return of the Jedi".

We can truly say, "The prequel era is over."

That's why it's always funny to me when I hear some SE apologist make the argument that "only a small percentage of fans would buy it, most people are happy with the current release, etc."

People who say that should not be qualified as "SE apologist". I could be considered a SE apologist since I think 1997 SE did improve the films. However I still support the effort to restore and release OOT in good format.

Objecting and arguing against the release of OOT in good format does not classify as defending the SE... it is something completely different. It is defending Lucas in his effort to prevent restoration of OOT and trying to erase it from the history.

Correct. Even Jar Jar himself wouldn't oppose the release of the OOT in a good format.

So wait, the GOUT doesn't have the original mix?

Nope. It's the 1993 version of the movie with everything, including different colouring, darkening of some scenes, the horrible noise reduction and the 1993 stereo remix. The only "change" they done was a last minute change of the 1977 crawl to Star Wars, otherwise the movies are the 1993 versions

Especially bad is the coloring of ROTJ. There's no way that ROTJ was that sleep-inducing in 1983.

Even if this Atlanta screening ends up being one of the old prints/dcp's, this news about RMW is still significant. It means that for the first time in an entire decade we have confirmation that there's been a new scan of the o-neg of Star Wars, even if it is just the Special Edition 4.0.

Indeed. This means 4k and corrected colors.

Don't worry. We'll get a theatrical restoration soon.  Disney has "top men" working on it now.

...?

At the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones is told that "top men" are studying the Ark. However, we then see that in reality the Ark is stored in a warehouse, never to be touched again.

I knew that, but didn't put it together with Cobra Kai's post. Thanks. :-)

You're welcome.

So, possibilities:

A. Brand new scan of the ON, with all original optical effects recomposited. (the original plan for the SE; unlikely due to having to find every element again)
B. Scan of '97 SE, with '11 effects redone in 4k. (making a 4k version of the Blu-ray, perhaps for theatrical/3D viewing; likely due to the SE being "George's vision")
C. Scan of '97 SE, replacing the CG additions with original optical effects. (making a mostly-despecialized edition/original plan for the SE; possible because it's "good enough" for most purists)
D. Scan of '97 SE, to have a 4k version of the '97 SE. (neat for preservation of a lot of people's first theatrical experience of Star Wars; doubtful because '97 Jabba should not be seen by human eyes ever again)

What else do we have?

Scan of '97 SE and they don't bother to add the '04 and '11 changes.

-"Without the EU, Star Wars would be just another sci-fi series that happens to be better than any other sci-fi series." That's like saying, "My children are just people who happen to be my children."

- At one point before the Legends announcement, a member of Stoey Group tweeted, "Some people just don't want to listen. Only the movies and TCW are canon" and TFN is calling that a "vague" statement. It was an absolute statement! What more could someone want to know?
