Yeah, I've got some really cool ideas for 3! Maybe I can join up with the Ranch after my re-edit is complete. If anyone wants to check the rough-cut of my opening sequence, you can download the 15 MB, 320x240 WMV file from YouSendIt.com here:

The main thrust of that edit was to eliminate the character of Sidious from Episode 1, a strategy that dramatically improves the story. Sidious plays much better in that story as the literal "Phantom Menace" who is alluded to, but never seen. That makes the Nemoidians into more worthy villains.

Thanks for the info, MTH! That's good to hear.

I'm glad to see someone put it so succinctly.

Since the Trilogy did figure into my life so much as a kid, and into adulthood, the dashed expectations and the revoked history (both filmic and of the SW universe itself) that resulted from the SEs and the prequels felt like betrayal.

The quote that this site is based on almost says it all. The OT gave viewers around the world a shared view for a universe, a fictional one but a shared view none-the-less. One of the big reasons Lucas wrote Star Wars was to provide a shared vision for our world, since, according to him, "the [19]60's shot the hell out of any shared vision we had for this place". He wanted to introduce a basic morality to kids of the 1970's, and he succeeded.

SW was a tale of good versus evil, of choice and consequence, and of redemption for the seemingly hopelessly lost. Lucas chose to marr the world that housed that vision 20 years after it had been indelibly imprinted on the conciousness of our planet. It was rewriting history. It was a betrayal of his audience. An audience which had even continued to pay him to enjoy the fantasy realm which he had created. Seems like Star Wars grew beyond Lucas, and he couldn't deal with that. 'Nuff said.

Get it while it's hot! 3 more days until the link expires. Click below to download my rough-cut of mr SW: Episode 3 re-edit.

It's a 320x240, 256k, 15 MB Windows Media file, so it's really just been produced for generating comments/critiques of the story flow and editing.

Please, share it with anyone who wants to check it out. I don't know torrents and don't care to invest the time right now to figure it all out. All critiques (not cynical criticisms) welcome; post here, or PM me.

Exactly. And Lucas majorly mis-stepped in revealing Palpatine's character. Although it was no secret from the audience, it was meant to be a shock to Anakin. Lucas made inappropriate leaps in revelation (majorly BUCK-ROGERS-like in their simplistic dialogue and direction).

The biggest example of this was when Palpatine told Anakin that he could not learn "this power" form a Jedi after he had been relating the story of Darth Plagus the Wise. Only when Palpatine tells Anakin later "Hey, I know the Dark Side, You can learn it form me" does Anakin snap to the obvious conclusion "oh, so you're the bad guy."

Lame exposition of character, and it makes Anakin look beyond naive to the point of stupidity.

Yeah, true Buddhism advocates total non-violence, but a change in religious POV and the fact that you (e.g., Lucas) are profiting from a series of films that you helped create could explain the stupid change to Greedo shooting first. Nobody said that claiming a religion meant that you couldn't be nominal (hypocritical) about it.

This goes way beyond what I was envisioning in my thread “Episode 3” or “What Convinced Me To Try a Re-edit”, but has anyone done Prequel edits for 1 and 2 that try to hide Darth Sidious’ dual character so that it becomes a dramatic revelation by Episode 3?

I always thought that, if the movies are actually to play in order from 1 through 6, Palpatine and Sidious should be separate characters in the audience’s mind so that even they feel betrayed by Palpatine’s duplicity.

From what I've heard, Lucas is a Buddhist, and the idea of killing in cold blood flies in the face of any Buddhist's beliefs.

As far as there being no redemption for a cold-blooded murderer, that idea seems more conservative to me than liberal, since ultra-conservatives are for the death penalty while ultra-liberals don't believe in killing anyone for their crimes.

I think Lucas's explanation of the change reflects a religious change in his world-view (he grew up attending a Protestant church) and perhaps the extent to which other people in the filmmaking process of the OT had a HUGE hand in shaping the Star Wars Universe, storylines, characters, and all.

Something I didn't think about last night when I originally replied:

Is there a thread that you know of where I can learn what software and procedures I need in order to separate audio channels from the original mpegs in order to get rid of music but keep the sound effects?

Right now, I'm doing simple audio editing with the original audio as captured in .AVI form.

I think that probably cinched it for me; the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. I was already straining under the 2 tons of animal stall muckings that were Episodes 1 and 2. Here's hoping my edit will at least give Star Wars a clean stall to live in.

If all goes according to plan, the ending will be quite dark, making "A New Hope" the powerful next chapter it should be.

This goes way beyond what I was envisioning, but has anyone done Prequel edits for 1 and 2 that try to hide Darth Sidious' dual character so that it becomes a dramatic revelation by Episode 3?

I'd like to be able to come back with a self-assured "all in good time" reply, but, as the material is difficult to work with due to to the heavy-cheese factor, I can't.

I'm hoping that the brevity of the battle will heighten the drama of the opening when accompanied by the new title crawl a buddy and I are in the midst of writing.

i totally agree, i caught these movies in the theater the first time around, and never stopped watching them. it's my first and last great obsession.
CO asks a great question: why are these movies so timeless and popular regardless of culture, and shouln't i be bored with them by now? to be sure, the mythic elements are resonant across civilizations and definitely help to make star wars accesible to all, but it's only a formula. few other films employing these tropes come close to the emminent watchability of the OOT.

ultimately i think it was a complex of variables:
1. mythic goodness
2. fantastic chemistry between actors (lucas sensibly spent a great deal of time on casting)
3. great writers helping lucas out
4. he borrowed the coolest stuff that kids from his era grew up loving and imitating on the playground, and blended all of these very FUN elements with "impeccable taste and panache" (westerns, flash gordon type serials, monster movies, war movies) into a delicious cinematic souffle. they're so much FUN to watch, and i think that accounts for a lot.
5. most importantly, he was plain lucky. everything just clicked while making these films. he had the right people surrounding him at the right time and the right place and he was a hungry, young artist desperate to prove himself. everything fell into place, and to his credit he birthed a work of genius.

with the prequels lucas was far from being a desperate artist. the primary concern was no longer the manufacture of profoundly artistic films; he was more concerned with advancing the technology of movie making. being surrounded by yes-men probably doesn't help. the emperor wears no flannel ... ewww.

I think that pretty much sums it up!

You got to see all 3 of the OT at the theater? Wish I had been old enough for that.

BTW, if anyone was interested in the shot I was modifying, it was one of Padme and Anakin from the first scene where she meets up with him upon his return from rescuing the Chancellor. I was able to remove Anakin from the shot, and it looks pretty flawless! That being said, I'm not sure it will work as insert in my Episode 3 re-cut. Oh, well. Learned something regardless.

I'll see what I can do, but I've got no reason to love Dooku, that's for sure. And I'd like to make Palpatine's true intentions for Anakin seem a little, okay... a LOT less obvious. The dialogue throughout the duel is very two-dimensional and weak, but maybe there is some good left in it. (alright, enough rephrasing of various Star Wars lines; my apologies)

Thanks for the critique. Yeah, the absence of Dooku might leave a hole in the story, but so much of what is important is so awkward or disappointing that I'll need to wait and see how that flows with the rest of the cut before I decide to try to cut any of it back in.

Maybe I could simply inter-cut the Obi-wan/Anakin/Dooku fight with the shots of the ship getting rocked? What do you think?

Okay, now, the title crawl will ultimately be changed, but here's a rough cut of what the beginning of my re-cut of Episode 3 will probably be.

It's a 320x240, 256k Windows Media file, so it's really just been produced for generating comments/critiques of the story flow and editing.

I think there are about 20 downloads left before they're maxed out on YouSendIt.com .

I just went back and re-read the starwars.com article out of sheer joy and noticed that it has been altered since the last time I read it. It now refers to the theatrical cuts as "bonus material" for the 2004 releases and no longer mentions the absence of the "Episode IV: A New Hope" subtitle. I wonder what it means, and why it was changed. Compare the version that Nanner Split has (thankfully) quoted at the top of this thread compared to how it reads now. Doesn't make much sense to me why it was shortened and changed.

Yeah, must've stepped on Lucas's toes or something. I hope that's all it is, though. The pre-ANH title crawl would be awesome. I hope Lucasfilm doesn't short-change us yet again.

Can we mount some kind of StarWars.com forum campaign to make our voices heard? Doesn't look like the official site allows for direct email access to them, the dodgy bunch!

Getting on-thread unlike I was earlier, yeah, "it" was the characters and the classic story elements. I mean what boy didn't want to be the hero hot-shot Luke? It was a classic coming-of-age story, a good vs. evil story; it was the hero's journey in which he got to keep his best friends, and it allowed the audience to wonder at the aspects of life that may never be solvable, that will always be mystical, will always be "the Force".
