I laugh at people buying 4K TVs… your eyes are almost certainly not good enough to tell the difference in the vast majority of viewing scenarios. Total waste of money

http://bgr.com/2015/09/18/720p-vs-1080p-vs-4k-resolution/

If we were just talking about the absolute resolution, you are right. At my normal viewing distance I can’t tell the difference between 720 and 1080. I’m certainly not going to see much improvement from a 4k screen. But it isn’t just the resolution. The more pixels you have to display the image data, the better the image looks. The pixels start to disappear and be truly invisible. I’ve known this about printing for years, but when you apply it to video, it really helps the realism of the image, even if you are watching a 480 DVD. With the proper hardware, everything will look better on a 4k screen, even if you never get a UHD player or media.

My dad has a 43 inch 4K TV and DVDs look horrendous.

Often, if you turn off all that image enhacent crap, lower quality sources like dvd actually look better. I have a 51" 1080p plasma tv, and i think DVD’s look pretty damn good if they were authored at high bitrate. a bit soft, but good.

A five year old could follow the plot of Rogue One. I know they don’t like the film but damn…

I’ll admit my first couple times through I didn’t understand why they had to blow a hole in the shield gate when Bodhi could get a signal to the Rebel Fleet no problem, but there is an explanation. If you have it on Blu-Ray, you can take the time to rewatch a given scene to get a better idea of what’s going on for your commentary.

(The data files are too big to get through the shield, or something, but the smaller communications from Bodhi wasn’t big enough to be blocked. I don’t like that explanation, but it exists.)

Not quite right. You need to watch it again 😋 it all works as good as any fiction.

Oh shit, I just realized my nine-year-old daughter doesn’t have an email address. She’s four years behind…how will she ever get into college now?

I feel like having an AOL email address would be even worse. If their admissions office is any good. 😋

What will happen when they find out her father named his OT.com account after a Confederate Mad Scientist’s assistant?

That might not be a bad thing in the future who knows. Getting back on topic. Wait what’s the topic?

So why does Lucasfilm know about his restoration if he doesn’t plan on releasing it?

Because he told them about it, probably.
Mike has done contract work on a few projects for Lucasfilm and Disney over the years and has many contacts there. He has always been open about Legacy and the fact that he wasn’t going to release it is precisely why he was able to obtain such good sources.

His plan after finishing the work was to set up a screening for executives with the hope that one day it might be actually used for a release. He last stated in November that he had found “the guy” at Disney and through those conversations was connected with “the guy” at Fox with tentative plans for a screening in late February.

And yes, he has good sources but he also developed new techniques to combine information together from his multiple sources, so his restoration is most definitely the best SW has ever looked.

So one of the reasons why he has access to the sources that he does is because he informed Lucasfilm of what he was doing?

have you read Mike Verta’s thread? i feel like most of this is covered there. Granted, its a really long thread. but better to read it from the source, then have it all reposted here.

Link?

I have Plex. My wife really loves when I get up three or four times during a movie to fix the screwed-up stream.

Ha I probably should have added that I had like 20 Cat 5E drops put in my house when we built it… so I have direct gigabit ethernet to every single TV in my house… I don’t even have to transcode (not even for the huge 22 GB verions of SW). (I also have a 24 TB SAN in my basement… I’m a bit of a techie)

Yeah over wifi you probably need to reduce your transcode quality a bit if your stream is getting screwed up.

are you my doppelganger? I have Cat 6A wired through our whole house, but i didn’t have the luxury of doing it when it was built. I spent over a year rewiring all the electric to replace knob and tube, and added ethernet at the same time. Wires over wireless, and disc over streaming. :p

Username: had it since i was a kid and was trying to pick my first ‘cool’ sounding name. probably for an unreal tournament game. (disclaimer, that was the only game i really got into, i am not a gamer, and haven’t touched computer games in ages). My initials are D A H so that is how it started. (dah + damage. ‘cool’ i know)

Avatar: I decided to stick with Brendon Small from Home Movies for my avatar on this site. I love this show and used to watch it all the time, but i haven’t seen it much since college days. I still think it is a great show however. Currently i have a Rogue One inspired version of my Avatar.

I’m curious what festivities you are all planning for Loyalty Day? I’m looking forward to the parade, and have my notebook ready for the dear leader’s field guidance.

I am planning to peer in my neighbor’s window to confirm that they are adequately celebratory, and report them if they show signs of disloyalty. I am so glad we finally got rid of all of the Communist connotations associated with May Day.
