I don’t think he’s going for the look of the negative in terms of color, that would make no sense - the negative doesn’t have any color-grading done.

I think he’s going for day one print accuracy, based off of Tech prints and actual props and costumes.

This. I couldn’t have put it better myself. In fact, I didn’t!

The new scan looks great!!! Out of curiosity are there any comparison vids anywhere that show the KCCI against this new 1st gen copy?

In the interest of comparing all the SWHS releases, I am actually working on a screenshot comparison page similar to the old OT screenshots site I made several years ago. Stay tuned.

Also this isn’t a 1st gen copy like WHIO. This is a master tape.

This might sound dumb (once again because I’m a dummy) but will we ever see Star Wars movies without the top + bottom black bars? Not even sure what it’s called but isn’t that what IMAX does? (We don’t have any IMAX theaters in Finland). The original trilogy is probably not compatible for this kind of treatment… or would a 4K restoration be enough? The Force Awakens might the first one, I guess.

All star wars movies are 2.35:1 aspect ratio, which means you’ll always see the horizontal black bars as long as the standard for TVs is 16:9 widescreen. TFA had a few scenes shot in IMAX ratio (can’t remember what AR off the top of my head) but there’s little to no chance we’ll see them on the blu-ray.

In terms of resolution, it really doesn’t matter. It could be in 4K but still have the same 2:35:1 ratio. Preserving aspect ratios is an important principle in the world of AV that some tend to forget or do not even know about in the first place.

Too bad they ruined it by zooming in until it fit the 16:9 aspect ratio

It’s just a test. The final version won’t be stretched to 16:9 and they have a lot on their plates so I would look at this as a minor inconvenience. They’re not stupid.

I was referring to that Onion Film Standard review video, what did you think I was talking about??

  1. I saw recently that there are plans for v3.0 of the movies. Is there any way to guess when these might be finished? Being foreign to this whole DS project I just have no idea if this is something like a few weeks or a few months or a year from now kind of thing.

Just don’t expect it anytime soon.

  1. I heard that episodes 1-3 were also tinkered with. Have they been tinkered with enough to warrant the need for a “DS” equivalent? And does a widely accepted DS version exist and where? Or should I just get the Blu-Ray versions?

Valeyard/RU.08 is working on a 1080p theatrical recreation of Episode I, which looks very promising and is close to completion.

A theatrical Episode II as we know it does not exist, so just rely on the HDTV version since it’s the closest thing.

Episode III only has one “change” in the form of that infamous wipe transition, so either the DVD/HDTV (does not have the wipe) or Blu-ray version (does) will do for watching it just to watch it. Schorman is working on a “theatrical” version of it, but I’m not really sure how different or unique it will be from official releases besides the wipe.

Should altered color grading in the subsequent releases of Star Wars (or any film) be preserved?
Time

This is a question I pondered when I downloaded Harmy’s Respecialized 97 Edition of Star Wars. As most of us know, the 1997 Special Edition version of Star Wars in particular used a certain IB Tech print owned by a collector, the same one used in Legacy and (I think) the same one Harmy used to grade the DE, and subsequently his '97 RE. However, the real colors in the '97 version are not the same as the '77 original for whatever dumb reason. Team Blu’s upscale of the SE actually presents the film with this altered color palette.

My question for discussion is one of intent vs. result. Should the original color grading of the '97 SE be preserved or should the originally intended color grading be prioritized for purity’s sake?

We as a community tend to like things preserved as they existed originally, even if these things were revisionist by nature, but color grading is a such a tricky subject that I feel like this could go either way, and I definitely want to hear people’s thoughts on the matter.
