Is it a requirement?

I was commenting on the recent conversation.

Your comments don’t describe me. I’m not bigoted and I never have claimed to carry a banner of tolerance. I don’t understand why you could possibly think of me as being proudly tolerant but there’s plenty of things I don’t understand.

Definition of bigotry

While we’re at it, we could also look at the bolded sentence and research the term oxymoron.

you seem to be under the impression that beliefs themselves somehow have the right to be respected and appreciated. I don’t think that.

I’m tolerant in that I accept that people can do and believe what they want

You don’t find those statements in conflict?

It is my impression that the word “tolerance”, as defined by the left, means that people are not only allowed to do and believe what they want, but also are allotted some measure of respect regarding their opinions or beliefs despite disagreement. A valid issue I see the right having with the left wielding that banner is that the left seems to be selective of which beliefs or opinions need be tolerated or respected.

That isn’t to say I take any position defending alt-righters who think mutual respect for one’s fellow man is a laughable farce of political correctness. I don’t. My position is that the left, not you personally MFM, is hypocritical for carrying the banner of tolerance when they only do it when it suits them.

What is the “Kurtz version?

Gary Kurtz, co-producer of Star Wars and TESB, wanted ROTJ to end on a bittersweet, poignant tone. Were Lucas not to have intervened and changed the story to be more fun and have a happy ending, among other things Han Solo would have died a sacrificial death for his friends (and completed his character arc from a selfish scoundrel to a loyal hero), there would have been no second Death Star, and also no Ewok Celebration (or “teddy bear picnic” as Harrison Ford put it).

Anyway, Star Wars and Harry Potter share the same villain: Snoke aka Voldemort.

What?? o.O

Okay, Voldemort is a narcissistic psychopath. Not the cultural trope usage of the word—a literal DSM5-definition psychopath. He’s not merely evil; he literally can not form emotional attachments with anyone, and he has no conscience whatsoever. Plus, he succeeded in splitting his soul such that he can not be killed. And only a single person, by virtue of being singled out by Voldemort himself, was capable of killing him.

Snoke is a stereotypically mustache-twirling bad guy. He’s just similar in that he’s been CGI’d.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I watched TLJ again tonight, and my wife and I had a funny moment during the film.

To give some backstory to this moment, my wife and I have watched the recent My Little Pony:FiM cartoons with our daughter several times. During one of the Halloween episodes, there is a character in the episode wearing a silly clown costume who attempts to talk to the little kids in a scary and spooky way, but another character turns and says “ugh. The rainbow wig just kills it for me.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L021arfz-CA&t=25s

I had previously had a discussion with my wife about how I didn’t really like the Holdo character because her appearance made me think she would have looked more at home in The Hunger Games rather than in Star Wars. Well, during the film this time, after Holdo first appeared on screen, my wife turns to me and says “The purple hair just kills it for me.”

I laughed. I will always remember her saying that whenever I see Holdo in the film from now on.

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

Saw TLJ again tonight. I felt compelled to watch it again because my mother-in-law, who only likes Star Wars just okay, and really isn’t into watching movies in general much, had already seen it twice and I myself only once. So I felt my “Star Wars nerd cred” was being threatened to some degree if I hadn’t seen it in theatres again.

It was still fantastic. In fact, I liked Holdo better now than I had previously. And knowing in advance about the twists in the plot didn’t lessen my appreciation for the film or those scenes.

I have no idea what this thread is, why it needs to be, or why I should care. And I don’t.

It’s almost like you could just… not comment then or something. Weird, I know. But it IS actually possible to simply ignore things you don’t care about or understand and move on with your life without chiming in about every single fucking thing to tell the world how little you care about it. You see, no one cares if you don’t care, so you needn’t feel compelled to let everyone know. Seems like you’re carrying around a heavy burden, feeling the need to leave a snarky comment on every single thread regardless of what it’s about or how pointless and annoying your comment is. Please rest assured, you can let go of that responsibility and everyone will be just fine.

more irony eh? you also couldn’t resist. and here i am, unable to resist. we are all just suckers ehh?

He has a point though.

^what’s so bad about that?

It’s busy. And loud. Bunch of characters squished together, and crazygonuts with the colors, starflares, and sparkliness.

I mean that seems representative of the movie…And yes I’ve seen it.

This thread is about cover art that is bad, not whether what would be bad cover art is actually not because the movie is also bad.

Liberals and Democrats are not hostile to religion and Christianity in particular.

Not all, but many are.

Can you tell me why Hillary, being a Methodist herself, did not bolster her appearance as a person of the Christian faith? Can you tell me why Obama, being a member of United Church of Christ, did not openly refute accusations that he was Muslim rather than letting people carry on forever with it?

For my money, it’s because it doesn’t target their base.

…As opposed to Republicans, who (and this is an enormous pet peeve of mine) co-opt their so-called Christianity for political points.

smh. I get frustrated just thinking about it.

Maybe I’m looking too hard into this out of desperation, but straight guys don’t tend to analyze their bros’ sexuality, right? That isn’t exactly a “no homo” thing to do.

Is it not? Sometimes, someone can have an eccentric personality in some particular fashion and straight people might wonder (privately or amongst themselves) whether that person is gay.
I’ve known that to happen a couple times regarding friends of mine.

I don’t understand why we have two Last Jedi discussion threads?

One was created for discussion before the movie was released; the other was created after the movie was released. Not really needed to delete this one, since there’s plenty of good discussion here.

Also, technically one is for discussion and the other is for review.
But I think the key difference at this point is that the review thread is toxic, and the discussion thread is not (yet.)

I would like to clear up the “piracy” incident. I was just putting the DVD on a USB to keep it from being scratched. I am very sorry if that is illegal too. 😥

Backing a movie up and/or putting it on another storage device for your own use, be it internal or external, is not illegal. Breaking the DRM on the disc so you can back it up is illegal.

I’m not aware that people here will berate you for backing up your DVDs (especially since I have done it with my entire library and no one bothered me much), but I’m fairly certain publicly explaining how to circumvent the DRM is frowned upon.

I dislike how many liberally minded people whom I have seen, claim to proudly carry the banner of tolerance but have a hypocritically sanctimonious attitude. As though their self-righteousness is somehow superior to the opposing self-righteousness that they rail against. It’s bigoted on both sides, but I feel the banner of “tolerance” some carry to be disingenuous and it’s bothered me more and more lately. Speaking for myself, of course.

In fact, I’m feeling more and more like people just in general are often bigoted. People who disagree with each other, on moral, philosophical or even political views are often extremely bigoted and closed-minded, thinking themselves somehow superior because they hold their views to be correct. And it’s compounded by the echo chambers we allow ourselves to live in with the availablity of social media that allows more like-minded bigoted people to congregate and validate each other.

Stop it.

I don’t get why this is either funny or offensive.

What?

You told him to stop it. I don’t understand why. I assume you were annoyed or something, but I don’t see why. I also don’t even really understand why he said it. I assume he said it to be witty, but I don’t get the joke.

So the whole thing confuses me.
