Dawn Of The Dead Ultimate Edition Volume 2-UPDATE Discs 1-4 (Released)

From THE BURNING laserdisc? Sounds a bit suss since Paramount put out SCREAM GREATS. Are you sure this isn't from the Dutch (?) DVD of DAY OF THE DEAD? I'd be interested to know in the quality and whether or not its an NTSC->PAL conversion. You or meedermow might wanna compare it to the screengrabs here:

http://www.horrordvds.com/modules.php?name=Reviews&file=viewarticle&id=226

I'm positive the cassette versions that Tom Savini sells are ones he has personally recorded off the laserdisc. I've done my own DVDR from the laserdisc but I haven't put it through any filters. Just SVIDEO in and then rendered it out at the maximum bitrate.

Eitherway, I'm happy for this to see some kinda release. Especially since Ash595 did up a wonderful cover a few pages back. And then maybe even Savini himself can start selling the DVDs at conventions, rather than the tapes. Not for profit, of course...

That's great. If I wasn't expecting a copy in the mail, I'd be getting it off there right now.

Oh, and you may wanna let the folk in alt.binaries.multimedia.horror know where you're posting it since they'll probably go nuts for this.

I'll write a lot more about the latter track when I've finished the whole disc, but know that it's on there and is a beaut, many thanks to the original donor of the cues, I hope you'll be proud with what I've done with them !

Wow. I'm interested to see how many of these cues were you able to locate. I know the 'needle drop' album released a coupla years ago was missing a substantial portion.

Great stuff.

Remembering an edited broadcast of ANH
Time
I don't intend to hijack this thread or anything, but...

In the mid-80's, I recall seeing a version of STAR WARS on Australian television that had the words 'MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU' in a bold white font superimposed on the bottom of the screen over the final (panned & scanned) shot with our heroes showing off their shiney new medals.

Anyone else ever seen or heard of this strange little variation?

Both the 5.1 and mono tracks have the original oldies tunes on the "Double Secret Probation Edition" released a few years ago. As far as I know, there wasn't even a non-anamorphic DVD. The first edition was pan & scan, mono, and bare-bones. Then, there was a collector's edition in 16x9, but unconverted from the widescreen laserdisc transfer (also still mono). The "Double Secret Probation Edition" is a brand new 16x9 transfer with 5.1 and mono tracks. As far as I know, none of these discs had altered sound mixes.

Interesting. I guess then that its possible that only some PAL versions have been modified.

You're most welcome, meedermow.

I have Son of... on VHS but its a second generation dub and the original must've been in rough shape because it looks horrible. That xvid version looks a thousand times better. Its a shame it wasn't posted in DVD format but it was posted anonymously so I don't like our chances of locating a better copy.

Hmmm... an interesting idea. I guess it would depend on just how screen-specific these commentaries get. For instance, its been a while since I've heard them but I know Romero has a tendancy to point out friends and family members in his films ...which could get kinda frustrating if you can't see exactly who he's talking about.

What are the alternatives?

Right, my computer is getting back on track so, klokwerk and Ash595, your scans are finally ready here.

I took the liberty of including the famous promotional photo of the 'machete zombie' as a potential alternative to the Scream Greats artwork version.

If there's any problems with the scans, lemme know.

Cheers.

P.S. I'll be mailing out Meedermow's stuff today. I'm a long ways away so it might take a little while to reach him.

Hey, sorry for the delay folks but I've had some computer troubles lately and have only just gotten back online. I lost everything so once I get all my drivers and programs sorted out, I'll do those scans. I'm still waiting on a reply from Meedermow so I can get 'The Incredibly Strange Filmshow' and the UK disc of MARTIN off to him.

I'm very disappointed by the general lack of response from HPotD. I can only hope its not due to snobbery, which I have experienced over there previously from certain members.

Meerdermow, I haven't gotten a PM reply from you [EDIT: I just turned my PMs on - oops]. Alternatively, if you'd like to contact me thru e-mail, do so via midgetlover at punkass dot com and I'll hook you up with 'The Incredibly Strange Filmshow' and the region 2 MARTIN dvd.

And klokwerk and Ash595, I'll get onto those scans for you ASAP.

Okay, I have a DVD that features both the UK commentary and the Elite commentary on the same audio track (one left speaker, the other right). A fresh conversion from DVD/Laserdisc would probably be an improvement but if that falls through, I'd be happy to contribute this. I got it in a trade so I can't give or take credit for it.

I also have the UK MARTIN DVD with the German DAWN thing (which actually runs for 23 minutes PAL) and the downloaded VHS->DivX of the Incredibly Strange Film Show episode (38 min PAL).

I also have a DVD conversion of the Tom Savini Scream Greats laserdisc that I made myself but that might be pushing the limits of a DAWN-orientated set (just a few shots borrowed from Document of the Dead). I may spruce it up with menus some day and pass it on as its own thing as its alotta fun.

There's a million articles on DAWN out there but one that might be of particular interest is the Tom Savini story from Fangoria #1. I'd be happy to scan it if there's any interest.

Apparently the German trailer features footage not found in ANY version out there. Just a few shots, however. As for a composite version incorporating ALL known footage, I recommend contacting the Mall of the Dead webmaster. He apparently started work on this project sometime ago. I'm unsure how far he has gotten but even if he has abandoned it, he may have some valuable advice for anyone else willing to take the challenge.

You might also wanna post a recruitment drive at the Homepage of the Dead forums for material. Alotta hardcore Romero nerds hang out there and I bet that, combined, they've probably got everything there is to have on DAWN (including, as I understand it, the 'needle drop' library music cues not available on any soundtrack release).

That would be appreciated. As I recall it had much more extensive coverage of the final bridge climb.

And this might be my memory playing tricks on me, but does anyone else recall a RAIDERS special hosted by Karen Allen? Its not The Making Of... and its not the Stunts one so I'm at a loss as to what I could be thinking of.

On the UK DVD of MARTIN, there's a German television piece on DAWN OF THE DEAD from back in the day featuring exclusive behind the scenes footage. It runs 10-15min.

Also, somebody uploaded the Romero episode of 'The Incredibly Strange Filmshow' TV series to alt.multimedia.horror back in late July. As well as being an interesting look at Romero's career up until 1988, it features one brief segment from the Monroeville Mall itself.
