Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

To me it's like a lossy mp3 rip. Sad.

Digital films are so lifeless.

Working in a theater will make you very depressed about that state of things. I'm not very good as a projectionist, but I learned as much as possible and always tried to make the print look as good as it could.

IMAX and 70mm are similar but different. Not an IMAX fan myself.

2001 just in 35mm was overwhelming. I love the idea of Cinerama and will see something in it one day.

Data can never equal celluloid. Ever.

Laserdisc revived - pics added - Japan Definitive Collection & Special Collection (WIP)

No the 1997 US and japan set had 5.1 as well.  Stored the traditional way they are stored on a laserdisc you need an rf out and demodulator to access the ac3 audio.

The bitrate is much lower on a 5.1 Dolby laserdisc mix than an equivalent 2 channel PCM digital audio on the disc.  But the 5.1 is sort of like the bitrate on a DVD?

You would have to ask the resident know it alls not me.

But there was no dedicated stereo mix made for the 1997 film the 5.1 was just mixed down to stereo? Anyway the 5.1 sounds better.

Stupid demodulators! The 5.1 on LD is near DVD quality-384 kbp/s versus 448 kbp/s. DTS LD is double DVD quality.

Always thought the stereo was a downmix, but it is Dolby surround at least. It's exactly the same, and the 5.1 does sound better.

This project sounds awesome. Long live LD.

No, I didn't steal Laura's Mercedes!

Must have been a re-release print then. Odd to see those out and about. All I've seen are the Lowry restorations touring around the country. (which have none of the DVD problems.) Would kill to see all the classic Bonds on Technicolor IB prints.

Mean Streets. Gosh, I forgot just how visceral and kinetic this film was. Young Keitel, DeNiro, and Scorsese. This is what a movie can be. So unbelievably good. I've got the soundtrack stuck in my head now-which was the longest part of the credits...go figure. ;)

captainsolo, I noticed you listed several Billy Wilder films. Have you ever seen Stalag 17? That one's one of my all-time favorite films.

I also can't believe I forgot to mention Apocalypse Now. That one might be my favorite movie of all time, I'd have to think about it a bit more. :P

A few more good ones:

Moon

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The Sting

(Paul Newman and Robert Duvall have tied for my "favorite actor ever" spot)

I like Stalag 17. Bill Holden=happiness. Billy Wilder may have been the funniest man who ever lived.

I love Paul Newman-especially The Verdict.

Duvall just is Tom Hagen and THX completely.

The Bond gunbarrel is pretty much the best opening sequence ever designed. It is instantly recognizable, brilliant, and the moment where you quiver with excitement. It is integral. Dalton is so good, and is rather like the book Bond in numerous ways. The thing is, that has never really been nailed film-wise. They are two separate entities. The closest we came was with George in OHMSS.

Connery becomes bored in his films because he was given nothing more to do. He was locked in to what the public wanted, and no one was going to mess with that. By YOLT he was completely fed up. The Japanese hounded him day and night, and the producers were unwilling to pay more or let him do more as 007. Thus, he is dull and uninvolving in the film for the most part. (compare this with his performance in The Hill two years before. Startling difference.) Thunderball was also besieged with problems and was essentially saved by Peter Hunt making frantic edits late in the game.

Hunt had wanted the ending of OHMSS to be the teaser for DAF, but with Lazenby's departure all plans for a down and dirty revenge picture were thrown out the window. Enter adult jokes, bad toupee Connery, Charles Gray in drag, Jimmy Dean, Wint and Kidd, Diamonds Are Forever. The wittiness of the script keeps the thing moving.

Moore could definitely kill and be dark. LALD and TMWTGG has him being ruthless and even roughing up women. Re-watch his second tryst with Rosie where he knows she is a double and begins to question her. "I certainly wouldn't have killed you before." Or the scene with Lazar the gunsmith where he turns the tables and aims at the man's groin: "Speak now or forever hold your piece."

The teaser for FYEO has never really worked. We begin with the nice tip of the hat to OHMSS. Then Moore has the serious delivery of "Yes, it usually is." He seems to be reminiscing of all he has lost because of his job. The action is not bad, but Blofeld in a power wheelchair? Come on! It's a cheap way to say that Bond is done with the past and is back in the Cold War. And who in the hell wrote the line about the stainless steel delicatessen?? Must have been the same person who decided to hire Bill Conti to do a Bond score.

Whoa. Completely forgot Sidney Lumet films:

12 Angry Men/The Hill/Murder On The Orient Express/Dog Day Afternoon/Network/Prince Of The City/The Verdict/Before The Devil Knows You're Dead.

And Frankenheimer: The Manchurian Candidate/Seconds/Ronin.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm/Batman Returns/Batman Forever:(childhood-don't judge me!)

Each film presents a different flavor of Bond, whether comedic or serious. That's one of the things that keeps it fresh.

As far as the "best" film is concerned it falls between FRWL or OHMSS.

My favorites (in some kind of relative order..I love them all.)

LALD, FRWL, OHMSS, Dr. No, Thunderball, TLD, Goldfinger, TSWLM, YOLT, TMWTGG, Moonraker, DAF, LTK, FYEO, Octopussy, AVTAK, GE, TWINE, DAD, TND.

I pretend the reboot, and Craig as Bond never happened. Like Indy 4 and Mad Max 3.

My favorite Bond changes depending on my mood. I flop between Moore, Connery, Lazenby, and Dalton.

Douglas Trumbull's new Showscan digital is using 60fps and 120fps. It's kinda scary.

They can blab on and on about how much clarity HD can give etc.

It still isn't the same. The technology is lifeless, their work is lifeless, and the videos (not films!) are lifeless.

70mm versus digital? If you say digital then you need your head examined.

I've always been more of a Dark Forces kind of guy--I've owned the whole series at one point or another, and still get out Jedi Outcast/Academy for my Mac sometimes.  (Of course, I do tend to cheat with the Force powers to make it more fun.  lol)  In addition to the excellence of gameplay, I like that their design makes relatively little concession to prequel-isms.

The dismemberment cheat is stunning. Outcast is awesome, Academy is really fun, and DFII: Jedi Knight is still a great game.

(I also kinda like Bringing Out the Dead, but it's not one of my favorites by a long stretch.  And Shutter Island was great, too.)

I still need to see Mean Streets, Casino, Cape Fear, and Gangs of New York.

What we like about the Prequels
Time

Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Watto, some of John Williams's scores, TPM duel was pretty good, some elements of the Jedi and their routines, Christopher Lee, Yoda on crack in Episode I, Samuel L. Jackson being pissed at other Jedi as Mace, and TPM's Dolby EX soundmix.

TPM is the best prequel. The others are only bad 1080p videos.

No one really got to act in these films, save for Neeson in some scenes of TPM.

1997 Special Edition Musings
Time

I like the fact they did a mass re-release. I like that other companies were involved and actually did a restoration. While I don't like most of the changes it's George's prerogative to make them. The originals should not have been suppressed and shouldn't be claimed "lost" and "unimportant drafts".

Now even the supposed definitive special edition has been suppressed. What the?

Can't wait for dj's work.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

I think it will eventually come in an acceptable way. It won't ever be what it should, but it will finally arrive several sets down the line. Lucasfilm will put a small trivial amount aside for a basic transfer and we'll finally have a anamorphic transfer that is up to probably 2005 standards with the 93 mix.

Try playing any of the awful prequel games (JEDI FREAKING BASH YOUR CONTROLLER AND PLAYSTATION AGAINST THE FLOOR POWER BATTLES!) and in about 2 minutes you will be cursing bad programmers, designers, and lucas. Or you could read an awful prequel novel.

Stover's ROTS novelization is so much better than the film though. Characters actually have psychological depth. If his Shatterpoint had been Episode II I think all of us would have been happy. (just about the best thing about the prequels.)

So I'd recommend reading the novelizations, and Ady's TPM reconstruction to have the least offensive prequel run.
