opinions on film restoration/preservation and how it applies to Star Wars - what do you think should/should not be allowed?
Time

The simplest answer would be to do a new transfer of George's IB prints that were the base for the 97 restoration. Then simply add the alternate soundtracks and do minor cleanup of any imperfections with the print itself. (no DVNR or anything else) Simple and not the best way, but at least it would be done with everything the way it should be.

Come to think of it since George just likes to dump old things into new formats to appease some fans on the cheap he just might like it.

Info: 1997 SE DV Broadcast Info & Discussion
Time

My two cents:

I don't really think the SE trailers were correct enough to base color timing off of.

Despite the added detail from using the broadcast versions of the SE, I still find that motion smearing to be extremely distracting. It's in the Revivax and DJ's test clips. I like the looks of my LD transfer better because of this.

Combining the 97 and 04 isn't a bad idea, but to me they seem like totally different beasts. The end result can look fantastic, but I've wanted something to represent the YCM labs work done instead of the tinkered version. In trying to color match, the LDs will have the detail but can be saturated by different players. The Silver box VHS set is probably the best overall for this but of course has less resolution. In fact, I think it resembles the broadcast versions just in lower resolution and without the motion smearing.

If I worked somewhere like Criterion this would be my definitive breakdown:

Original theatrical releases seamlessly branched with 70mm editions. 97SE trilogy as a Bonus archival version.

SW in original mono, stereo, 70mm mix (4.2 original or upmixed), and 93 mix

ESB in original Dolby stereo, 70mm mix, 93 mix

ROTJ in original Dolby stereo, 70mm mix, 93 mix

The grain shouldn't be touched, the problem is the color timing. Almost every release has variations, so the best representations would be the original masters and the Technicolor IB prints. (are there any for ESB or ROTJ?)

All around I would just want the most untouched release possible-one that matches the original film as much as possible. The only technical gripe I have are the darned garbage mattes.

Conquest was the first Apes movie I saw. I still like it best of the sequels for the ideas presented and bits of verite style. The original ending is much better.

And the new Rise of the Planet of the Apes will definitely suck. I'm not even much of a Apes fan, but it looks like standard end of the world CGI action that just happens to have "Planet of the Apes" in the title. Really infuriating. Well, it can't be worse than the remake...can it?

Bottom line, we will have to wait 20 years for the OOT that should have been in good quality 10 years ago.

I still say this is how we will all experience the 1977 theatrical version - à la Soylent Green.

I just died laughing. Guess this print gets recycled in the Soylent factory into new pressings of the Blu-rays.
