Can't believe this was ever let out of the vault. Stunning.
Can't believe this was ever let out of the vault. Stunning.
Why oh why do they have to keep the 04s?? The least they could have done was do a straight transfer of the 97s to appease SE lovers. Then there would at least be an HD version without all of the transfer issues. (and a dream soundtrack for lossless!!)
-Does Lucas have some kind of deal with a Laserdisc parts company?
-The restoration can't be that expensive. Plus it's not like the film doesn't have the interest behind it. Coppola merely asked around to see if The Godfather could look any better and immediately got an outpouring of support that led to the full and meticulous restoration of the entire trilogy. 4 other versions of Blade Runner were included in the box set and no one but a fan would have asked for them. I wonder what would happen if someone did a simple transfer of Lucas's own Technicolor 3strip print that just happens to be lying around in storage somewhere-and then just showed it to him. It's not that hard.
We should petition to get it released in the Warner Archive.
Can't he just go and do those little art films he announced after finally finishing SW? Why do we need more gratuitous shows and cartoons?
That is true. The doc on the last side of the 97 LD set is the three shorter VHS intros compiled into a longer program. Essentially it doesn't have much more info, but they changed the narrator for some reason...
There is no reason that they couldn't have included the original. It is simply because the original is withheld.
WB included both cuts of Dark City on the Blu ray.

On topic, wish I was going, just to see if I could run into a few of you guys.
Agree. I'd be there in a heartbeat if it was an ot.com convention.

Although the original book does end with Alex being reformed... but Kubrick didn't know that because the American version cut out the last chapter.
Does anybody agree with that last chapter? I remember reading the book and being very confused why it was suddenly there.
Ripley's Game-John Malkovich as Tom Ripley. Need I say more?
Either order of audio is fine. The best part is actually having all the options in one place for once!!
Before this I usually watched SW with the mono option. Now after seeing the 70mm recreation with the movie it just blows everything out of the water. It really is night and day.
I vote yes.

And my vote is "no" just so I can find out what will happen.
Unfortuantely I have to agree with this.
I vote no.
I vote yea-otherwise the man will smite you.
You should compose it on a typewriter just to make him happy.

Im not even going there with Apocalypse Now, you need to be somokin some illigal substance really hard to even try to understand Coppola was trying to convay with that ship
Not really. It's more subliminal then explicitly stated. You might need something to get through Redux however...
Superman: Doomsday
Something that has been bothering me for some time: what exactly is changed when a film with an original Dolby SR track is released in 5.1? Dolby SR is essentially 4.0 (Left, Center, Right, Surround) mixed onto a stereo track and restored with a receiver from what I understand.
Great news. Hard to believe it's been 13 years since these were presented correctly.

I can't believe every home release has been so off! When will we truly get Star Wars the way it was meant to be seen? Actually, I have a question: can anyone remember what the Death Star looked like in '97 in theaters?
From what I remember it did look like the Senator print for the most part. Not exactly the same, but very close. Save for the 81 crawl isn't this print identical to Lucas's that was used for the 97SE of SW?

The original Obi-Wan.
Topaz-interesting but flawed. Needs original ending out of all three choices. And I just can't get enough of the scene where Juanita dies....how we miss you Hitch.
The Masque of the Red Death-I adore Poe and Price. This is the most vibrant of all the Poe series. The DVD is worth it for the full 2.35 frame and sumptuous color. (such a jump from years of VHS) It's so nice to see something that looks fantastic done for no money. Plus it was shot by Nicholas Roeg.
The poster art is just awesome.
Like "put the monkeys up front". That reminds me-the new CGI monkeys are unwatchable.
Same here. I first joined this site to find the SE.
If you want to add the 2.0 go ahead.
Thank goodness they have finally decided to release it in 2.35:1!! If this can happen, why can't we get THX restored? (probably because some people didn't want to pay for a transfer of original elements.)
One thing though-is it just me or does Apocalypse have different colors than Redux?
It's the same mix isn't it?
DTS can be beneficial for some films due to the higher bitrate, but I usually prefer to watch films in their original release format. If it was a Dolby release then I stick with that track unless the other is a preferred option by the people involved etc.
The difference can be heard on some films: Tomorrow Never Dies was impressive in its Dolby mix. (like it was in the theater-okay movie, great sound mix) I switched over to the DTS just out of curiosity and was blown away.
Then again, I'm talking about standard and not HD or lossless.
The only way I can see DTS for Star Wars is using the 1997 DTS mix for the Special Edition and a brand new DTS 70mm mix (like the one created for the Vertigo restoration).
Silly me-what was I thinking??
Anybody know? Is it 384 kbps like the ac3 on a right analog track?
