Boycott Star Wars on Blu-ray
Time

After taping the films on TV numerous times a a kid, buying the 95 VHS box set, the 95 WS VHS box set, 97 Fullscreen VHS Box set, 97 VHS Widescreen Box Set twice, 97 SE Laserdisc, 2004 DVD Box Set, and GOUT I think I have enough official releases to last me a lifetime.

After borrowing the GOUT from a friend four years ago and realizing that it was the 93 master I gave up on Lucasfilm. Now we have been teased with this blu release and smited yet again. This time they've added the deleted scenes that we were never ever going to see so that our defenses will crumble again.

No dice.

When fans can make better versions than the official companies there is a serious problem.

I don't have blu capability either, so it won't really matter for me in the long run. It will sting though. Already I have had to talk to many who are excited about this new release and explain to them that it's the 04's again. We're not crazy fanboys anymore. Regular people are actually getting pissed about this now.

Who needs this Blu when we're on ot.com? We're like the unofficial OOT restoration crew anyway. If anyone so much as mentions star wars we go off on a tangent about four eyed stormtroopers and color timing and sound mixes. If Lucasfilm actually wanted to make the final definitive collection all they'd ever have to do is just ask around here.

So no straight transfer of either the 97SE or GOUT master. The least they could have done (which still would have been infuriating, but maybe better than completely ignoring) was to release the GOUT master in HD and anamorphic. That would have taken what, all of 5 minutes? WB released a limited edition cleaned up version of Blade Runner a year before the box set's release. It's not like it hasn't been done before.

I also recently watched Dracula Dead And Loving It on fastforward (Christ Almighty we moan about George Lucas but Mel Brookes must have been swapped with a body double sometime after High Anxiety).

A friend persuaded me to watch this mess. What happened to Mel?? Just tasteless.

just saw "The Wicker Man" (1973) this morning. Really good. Decided to seek it after some days ago the 2006 remake played on tv. What were they thinking remaking this movie? Jeez, that was atrocious! It had little to do with the original movie. And Nicholas Cage??? Wtf??

Yes, we go from one of the most chilling horror films of all time to BEES!

Breathless 50th Anniversary Restoration-left me breathless ;)

laserdisc player recommendations
Time

Best advice besides checking ebay is to check local listings-especially craigslist. You can usually find a relatively high-end player on the cheap that someone has found in their closet. I got a mint Pioneer cld-d702 for $25 this way and it works great (just wish it had come with the remote...) Had considered one on ebay but the shipping can be murder.

Not sure which model to recommend. Depends on what features you are looking for. Nowadays it can be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Check laserdiscarchive.co.uk for a listing of models and details.

From my own experience: If a film soundtrack is released on home video in DTS and Dolby the difference is that the DTS track has a higher bitrate. DTS overall has a higher bitrate and on some films will sound much more dynamic. It really depends on the film and equipment.

What is the difference in Blu-ray codecs? I thought that these were lossless. I'm a complete Blu novice so I really don't know much of anything about these new codecs and such. I'm thinking that everyone is using DTS because it has always held more information. What should be done is simply use whichever method the film was designed for in the best possible quality. Dolby is synonymous with the OT, but that may not exactly translate to HD. None of this will likely matter since Lucasfilm has been busy at work on another new soundtrack. Why I don't know because the 97 was perfect.

Ady, did the 97 DTS really sound that much better than the Dolby mix? Not sure what I heard in theaters back then.

I think it will just be Redux and the original branched much like the Complete Dossier set-this time actually in 2.35!!

If we even get original audio for the OOT on a new release-all we'd probably ever get is the 93 mix. I doubt anyone would ever go back and actually release the original mixes, let alone all of them and the 70mm.

Was noticing that smearing on the Revivax and DJ's test clips. It really isn't present on the LDs. (from what I recall)

BTW: what method did you use on Mac for this? I used one while at school with an old LD player and FCP-which didn't work out well at all...the captures looked awful no matter what I did to them. Not to mention that trying to add the 5.1 ac3 was a nightmare b/c FCP does not accept ac3.

Talking of blacks, has anyone else with the PAL '97 SE LD set noticed that ANH seems to be darker then ESB and ROTJ or have I got a duff set?

It's because the 97ANH was timed to match Lucas's Technicolor 3strip print. Plus it is known that the telecine for this version of ANH was messed up in processing (why Mos Eisley and other Tatooine scenes are pinkish).

To A B C I'm not going to let the Blu-Ray release put me off doing this or any other preservation project, mainly because while the video and audio quality in theory should be outstanding assuming LFL can exercise some quality control this time! The actual movies will be based off the 2004 versions which I personally dislike, so unless things change and he at least gives us the OUT on Blu-Ray which I doubt he will this time around, I wont be buying.

Hear, Hear! Fantastic looking caps, and I commend you for attempting this on a Mac. I tried with the NTSC set and ran into so many problems I eventually dropped it in favor of the broadcast versions.

Perfect. It would be so simple to do this!! Lucas blabbed on and on 13 years ago about how the films had been "saved" (although certain prints like the Senator IB and others still existed) and ever since then nothing has been made of them. No real theater bookings have been made since the SE release save for a few rare digital screenings of the 04. Also, if the basis of the original was the 97 restoration-they could simply use the 97SE 5.1 and make changes where the added material was removed.

I hate the fact that many modern releases only seem to have 5.1 mixes.  I would love to have original mono and stereo soundtracks included more often.  There is a real nostalgia value attached to listening to them for me.  I am not just talking about SW here, just in general.

I agree. Couldn't we finally get lossless original audio? Not every film needs a remix!

Any moment now the party will start...
