4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I’ve never understood copying someone else’s calibration settings (which seems to be very common on A/V forums and groups). It doesn’t account for the variance from set to set, even if they’re the same exact model. And it completely ignores the fact that each tv is in a unique environment with its own lighting.

FWIW, I’ve checked out bits of all the OT and TPM, just in regular HD, and I think the OT color grading is surprisingly nice. I haven’t watched the prequels in over 10 years and the SE has been even longer than that. But I’m so pleased they finally got rid of the garish mess of color grading that was introduced with the DVDs that I’m seriously thinking about watching all the “official cannon” films in chronological order prior to TROS in December.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (Video Game)
Time

Well, i don’t know which systems the reviews I’ve watched were on but there were lots and lots of bugs like characters magically popping into cutscenes halfway through, npcs getting stuck in walls and floors and things, collision detection problems (passing through walls was a common one), and some really buggy ai for bad guys at times. And every single review I’ve checked has exhibited pretty much all of these problems and every reviewer has mentioned them in the reviews. Heck, that jimpressions video has most of all of them.

None of them look to ruin the game, but I figure if I wait a bit most of them will get sorted out hopefully.

How can you kill such a giant rhino beast with such a small knife ?

He probably made an educated guess as to where the beast’s carotid artery was.

No bleeding ? Instant death ?!

Yeah I thought maybe he hit the artery too for a split second, but the no bleeding out quickly changed my mind. I still think it’s must’ve been poison. Or maybe he hit the brain (in the neck…?)? Poison still makes the most sense to me.

Man, after a busy weekend working I finally sat down to watch episode 2 last night. What an episode! I’m am 100% hooked and totally onboard for the ride with this show. It’s everything I want out of a Star Wars bounty hunter! I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the Yadpole, but I am very much digging the “Lone Wolf and Cub” approach they’ve taken. It’s so good.

And the action sequence with the sand crawler was just magnificent! I honestly don’t have a single criticism of this episode. I loved it! And yeah, I assumed the knife had to be poisoned too.

That’s an excellent point. Trying to force an explanation when none is really needed has just created more inconsistency. I’m not opposed to the idea of the kyber crystals having some connection to the force, but they way they are going about it just isn’t very good or well thought out.

Like, I’d be ok with them having a kind of presence in the force, like a vibration or something (crystal vibrations are something that plays right into the mysticism angle). I mean, that idea works well with the scene where Chirrut senses Jyn’s necklace in Rogue One.

But having them be semi-sentient and Sith having to bend them to their will to get them to work? And then “bleeding” in response? It’s just dumb.

Yeah the 50 years old thing doesn’t really make sense. I get the ‘some species age differently’ thing, but if that baby is 50 then 900 would be a pretty young age for Yoda to die at.

My wife had the same complaint. But I pointed out to her that perhaps not all species age in the same proportions. For example, a mouse* might spend a smaller percentage of its existence as a juvenile than a human does. This is largely because humans have larger, more complex brains that take much more development and thus we spend a larger percentage of our lifespan as children. Perhaps Yodas have even more complex brains and take even longer to mature?

*according to Wikipedia the upper limit of a common mouse lifespan is about 3 years. They mature into adults in about 6 weeks, thus spending about 4% of their life as a juvenile. Using Wikipedia data of a current normal maximum of 104 year for human lifespan and a maturity of 21 (the Internet gives a range of 18-25) humans spend about 20% of their lives as juveniles).

It’s a cool idea, but wouldn’t a more mystical reason make more sense in SW? E.g. the idea of bonding with a living crystal if you’re a Jedi, or “bleeding” it if you’re a Sith.

I don’t get why so many people don’t like the new lightsaber crystal lore. It’s such a Star Wars-y concept. They’ve even named them Kyber crystals.

because the inclination against the mystic side of Star Wars is strong among sci-fi nerds

Rather, that the movies never indicate this level of ‘bonding with a living crystal’; Yoda relegates it to the status of Luke’s blaster in being just another distraction from his Jedi training in his test at the tree, and the Emperor casually dismisses it as a ‘Jedi’s weapon’, implying that the Sith wouldn’t use lightsabers at all. Vader presumably only has one because he was formerly a Jedi. The crystal is clearly not bonded too closely to Force users since Han can use Luke’s lightsaber just fine.

Point being, the lightsaber in the OT is merely an elegant weapon from a more civilized age. Giving it a ton of weird mystical baggage actually makes the weapon less elegant in the story, not more.

Agreed.

Less a thought and more of a question: I was skimming through the phantom menace on Disney+. It’s been at least 15 years since I’ve watched the movie but I swear there was a scene where one of Darth Maul’s probes on Tatooine is flying behind Qui-gon who quickly spins around and slices it in half with his lightsaber. But I don’t see it in the film. Am I missing something?

Also, DuracellEnergizer, thank you for making me aware of this awesome looking film, “Ladyhawke”! Never heard of it before but now I know what I’m watching before going to the Renaissance Festival later this month!

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Yesterday morning, when I was getting my Disney+ account all set up I noticed they had all the Star Wars films (sans Solo and TLJ due to their Netflix deals not expiring yet) up and in 4K UHD. I don’t have anything 4K compatible yet, but I still immediately skimmed through Star Wars and ESB to see if anything was new. I was blown away by how much better the colors were than any previous digital (disc or streaming) release! I still vastly prefer the original cuts (and thank God for 4K77, 80, and 83!!) but if you’re gonna watch the SE, at least it isn’t an eye-assaulting magenta and purple horrorshow anymore! It actually looks… nice.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I might actually watch them! I haven’t watched an SE in its entirety since the VHS era, so that’s saying something!

The Mandalorian - Star Wars live action TV series : Non Spolier thread

So without spoilers… what are people saying/thinking about the series? The trailers look great but they can be deceptive…

I thought it was pretty good. It starts out well but then quickly gets bogged down and becomes too “marvel cinematic universe”-ish, in a not so great way. Luckily it picks back up and the last half or so is pretty great. It leans hard into the “western in space” concept and that is a very good thing. It’s far from perfect but I think it has great potential.

One thing mentioned in the spoiler thread, but not really a spoiler (I hope y’all agree…) is that it uses original music and doesn’t really rely on John Williams’ body of work at all. That felt a little jarring at first because we are just trained to expect his music to pop up frequently in anything Star Wars. The fact that this show was completely devoid of Williams’ music was rather jarring at first. I actually think it works to the show’s benefit but it does take some retraining of your mind’s “muscle memory” so to speak. Now that I know to expect that, it’s totally fine and works.

I thought the main characters were good. Some of the bit parts (especially one blue alien) were either poorly written or poorly acted (or both) but all the key players did a nice job. The Mandalorian is intriguing and I’m eager to see where his story goes. IG-11 is also awesome. I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, but I really love how they wrote his character and also how they brought it to life onscreen.

The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *
Time

The Easter eggs (the ones I caught so far) are handled much better than, say, Dr. Evazan or the droids in Rogue One.

REMINDER, SPOILER THREAD!! MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW!!!

I just watched episode one and gotta say, I’m hooked! The opening scene in the bar was pretty great, but then it felt a little rough and a bit too “marvel-y” for the next few minutes (when the Mandalorian is traveling with his bounty to his ship and then in space). But then it hits its stride again quickly thereafter and just gets better as it goes.

I LOVED IG-11! His personality is perfect and the way they made him move is flipping spectacular! He moves with this jerky, “1980’s theme park animatronic” style motion; but is still quick, precise, and deadly. It’s amazingly cool to watch and puts IG-88 from ESB into a whole new perspective! Kinda sad he got his head blown apart… but I suspect he’ll be back again. There’s no way they invested that much money in his animation to have him offed in the first episode.

Also, I was pretty shocked by the revelation of the bounty. As they approached the container I asked aloud, “is it a baby?” And my wife responded, “they said it was 50 years old…”. Then we see the back of his head. I was stunned! A baby Yoda!? Cannot wait to see where this goes!

I’d love to see that 3PO (and R2) costume if you find a photo. Our kids’ masks and weaponry were store bought, but the costumes are homemade from the neck down and I had to add several details to the Stormtrooper mask because it had very few of the details painted. My Boba Fett costume came from amazon, the jet pack is inflatable!

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion NON SPOILER THREAD
Time

Huh. Rogue One, to me, felt like some of the best EU from the 90’s (like the early X-wing novels and comics or the dark forces video game series) brought to live action.

This trailer feels like some of the more bizarre or “out there” 90’s EU like, say, Dark Empire. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not yet…

I do love the image of the ice crystal palace thing with TIE fighters flying towards it. It feels like something from the Leigh Brackett draft of ESB (which I envisioned having a glitzy 70’s scifi visual style. Kinda like if Star Wars went all “Xanadu” in the sequel). The cavalry charge across the surface of a Star Destroyer seems… …odd…
