DTS audio preservation .... UPDATE 07 May 2015 ... Work In Progress
Time

I have no doubts that Bourne sounds good...but one can't compared two different films' sound mixes and say one is better than the other: they both have two different intents and purposes.

You can say one is more pleasing to listen to, but that's about where it ends.  As far as I can tell, the Dark Knight Rises audio on Blu-ray is faithful to the cinematic experience, whether one likes that experience or not.  And that should be the purpose of Blu-ray and the work we all do: preserve that experience.

Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park

Let's be frank too: this is a 3D only release, that is designed to be viewed in 3D, with glasses.  We aren't really giving it a fair assessment if we're looking at it in 2D, on computer monitors.

If we can keep pressuring Universal for a good 2D, 4K derived transfer, I think we're in for a treat.

I'm gonna say that even without seeing this on my system yet, the 3D version still looks vastly better than that wretched 2011 version.

Am I reading correctly too that this disc has a Dolby 5.1 track?  Can anyone confirm alternate audio tracks?

That Blu-ray.com reviewer loses credibility when he says "First things first: there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 2011 DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround track."

Thing about these schmucks is that they review arbitrarily, not basing their reviews on accuracy to an original theatrical experience.

As far as the image, the 3D disc is so much closer to the film print I saw.  Surely not the same, but it's so much closer and better than the 2011 disc.  Honestly, you can't even consider the 2011 disc acceptable.  It's overly enhanced, poorly colored shit.

These are just screen caps from VLC running a 1080p mkv rip of the trailer, in 2D.  Taken from a DCP.  I don't know what you all are on about.  This looks just about the same as the 35mm print I saw last year.  In motion, it's amazing.

Has anyone actually seen the new Blu-ray?  It's not even out yet.  From what I can tell, a lot of this judgement is being placed on a YouTube trailer, hardly a good reference.

Info: Films re-color timed on video releases

I'd also love the shit out of a theatrical version put together from a color corrected EE master, since while I slightly prefer the EE of FOTR, it could be fun to revisit the theatrical version as that is what I had on VHS back in '02 and watched more times than I could count and the theatrical version BD is effed up.

I'd pay money for this.  I not only saw but projected this film a ton in 2001-2002 and it'd be GREAT to get a true theatrical presentation.  I've also always felt the sound on disc (blu-ray and DVD) lacked a ton against the theatrical mixes I heard in both Dolby and DTS.

I saw this so much I knew not only all the reel changes, but I know where the film switches from track A to track B off the DTS discs!

I was actually thinking more along the lines of Dolby, DTS, THX, etc. trailers but if while we're at it, normal trailers would be great.  My dream would be the original theatrical trailer for Pearl Harbor with the music from the Thin Red Line.  It was never released on any format.

I've got the DTS trailer disc with the audio on it somewhere.  Getting a better picture would be a little bit more of a problem.

Digital Source for the '77 Stereo Mix

So far so good.  Synced it with the DE and it's a real treat.  To my ears, the 1993 mix is still the best sounding, but this is great, if not a tad bright.  I'm not too familiar with the subtleties of the Empire mixes, so I can't compare with any great knowledge.

By the way, one this is considered done, let me know and I can encode a DTS-HD file, which is what I did to test.

I'm looking forward to Jedi for sure!

Sound Trailer Preservation

Anyone down for preserving some rare ones?  There are several places online to get most THX/Dolby/DTS trailers.  But with all the discussion of the DTS trailer for Jurassic Park, I figured why not maybe make this thread a catch all for anything else.

Dolby Stereo trailers?  Ultra Stereo?  YouTube has some but the quality is usually pretty shitty.

I'll start things out with seeing if anyone wants to tackle the DTS trailer.  I've ripped the audio from the JP DTS cinema discs and would just need someone to do the proper editing.  The video is pretty readily available as a 480p .VOB that we'd want to upscale.  Of course, a scan of the 35mm trailer itself would yield better results, but it never really looked that good anyway.

Let me know if you're interested, and I can PM you the audio.

Neither of those are the ORIGINAL version unfortunately.  The original fades away after the disc explodes, and never has the "THIS THEATRE FEATURES" or the "DTS DIGITAL SOUND" logo.

With our audio, and some clever editing though, we could "re-create" it fairly easily.

I don't think I have the stems from the original rip of JP, but if I do, I'll up a copy of what it sounds like.  If not, I'll just got back to the original discs and pull a copy off.  Hopefully within the next day or so.

-I haven't heard the DTS cinema discs on my system for ID4, but the LD seems awfully faithful, better than the AC3 Laserdisc.  I've yet to hear it on Blu-ray, but if it was sourced from the DVDs mix, it won't be as good.

-The DTS trailer attached to JP and other early DTS titles was a slightly shortened version of the one we are used to seeing.  We have the audio for it from the DTS discs of Jurassic Park, but no video exists anywhere.  It would be possible with some clever editing to re-create it with the DTS trailer that appears on several DVDs.  Basically, the only difference is that after THE DIGITAL EXPERIENCE blows up, the sound and image fade away into nothing after the explosion.  It's a neat effect and was awesome to see in front of JP last summer at a 35mm screening I attended.
