Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park

My copy of the 3D Bluray won't arrive until Thursday and I don't have a BD drive in this machine anymore, so I won't be able to rip it and adjust, but...

...what I'd do is rip the audio track, check it's frame amount, then add the difference as silence to the front of the DTS track.  They should both end at the same spot.

I wonder how hard it would be to do a scan of a print ourselves.  The cheating method would be to telesync with an HD camera adjusted properly, but it would only be 1080p and wouldn't be a true scan, but maybe closer to theatrically accurate than what we're being fed.

They actually end at different spots: the 3D credits have an added bit for the stereoscopic conversion.  Even the Amblin logo fades a bit faster too I believe.  I could try comparing.  Just using time shifting, my copy seemed relatively successful.  If anyone wants to follow the same method I did above and see if I just can't evaluate delay, that'd be great.  Again, I'm no expert but I was pleased with what I got.

I got a real good look at the transfer finally too.  It isn't perfect for sure, but I'm not faulting it completely since I'm watching a 2D version of a 3D file.  That being said, I did lower the color saturation on my projector to match what I feel is accurate and the results were not too bad.  There are many shots still with a lot of detail, but others do feel a bit "scrubbed".  The 35mm print I saw last year was actually very similar to that, but I think it still had more detail than what we're seeing here.

It just felt more film-like to me than the 2011 transfer, which feels so overly enhanced and digital.

Messed around a bit in Audacity. Had luck delaying by 2427ms. I'm no expert but it seems close.

All I did was time shift the original track with the 2013 one and got as close as I could.

Feel free to experiment. This was my first time trying this and it was awfully fun!

You all have created a monster!

I wasn't able to test my rip on my system, only my relatively slow laptop.  However, it was obvious my sync was way off: I didn't use an offset.

I haven't ripped a 3D Blu-ray before so a bit of trial and error.  I re-ripped last night with DVD Fab instead, and it looks like a nice .m2ts is waiting for me when i get off of work to play with.

I do still want to figure out how to get that old universal logo on there eventually too.

Confirmed: the 5.1 and 2.0 mix are derived from the new mix. Big change that gives it away to me every time: listen to the dialogue between Hammond and Genarro in the jeep before seeing the Brachiosaurus. Seems to me maybe they tried to appease fans but obviously they just half assed it as usual. Waiting for my remux to finish and check sync of the correct mix.

As for the image, yeah, it's DNRd for sure. Some shots are worse than others. It's tolerable but still a shame.  Damn Universal, you suck. A big Dino turd.

The quest continues for a perfect home version.

True enough.  I thought Jaws was downright awesome.  E.T. was stunning.  I don't know if the 7.1 mix is accurate to the original Dolby 6 track mix, as I was too young, but it sounded wonderful.  I had the original version on DVD way back when, and always remember the 5.1 track on that being terrific as well.

As for Jaws, I disliked the re-mix so I stuck with mono, which was excellent.

Not that I've seen it, but are all these comparisons between the two not taking into account the "perceived" detail in the 2011 sample because it is overly edge enhanced?  Of course the 2013 3D isn't going to look right: not only is it designed for 3D viewing, with glasses, in motion, but the 2011 disc is so wrong that anything looks dull by comparison.

Again, all speculation.

^^^if that's the case, that could bode well for syncing since I'd venture that track is pretty close to what work we've already done.  Finger crossed!

It is strange that they would all of a sudden include the original mix, but then encode it at a low bit rate.  I'd imagine it's the very same file from the DTS DVD.  (SPECULATION).

Also, anyone else thinking the 2011 disc is any good, here's the original trailer:

Shitty YouTube quality, but you get the idea.  Again, this has a similar feel to the 35mm print I saw last year.  In fact, having seen JP cinematically way back in the 90s, then growing up with the VHS/LaserDiscs (had the DVDs but always went back to the LaserDiscs), I wasn't sure really what it should look like.  Seeing it last year was a revelation.  I hope that print is somewhere safe.

A 70mm blow up?  Are you sure?  As far as I know, JP never had any 70mm prints struck, unless it was some sort of one off thing.  That'd mean it was in 6 track mag.  Based on all the things I've ever seen, 70mm prints were never struck.  Had DTS not been ready, I'm sure we would might have seen 70mm 6 track prints struck.

This of course is all stateside.

Also, have when was the last time anyone has seen this one on 35mm?  I saw it less than a year ago, and watched it about as closely as I could because I was not only excited to see my favorite film at an age I could really appreciate it, but also because the 2011 disc just did not look right.

I know some folks with a print...I'll see if I can get them to scan a few frames but don't hold your breath.

Edit: I too like the LaserDisc...a lot.
