Info Wanted: DTS Tracks on Superbit DVD's... Original Cinema DTS mixes???
Time

I have the xXx Superbit.  The DTS track, while good, still to me lacked the overall impact of the theatrical Dolby Digital I saw.  I mean, I did see it in a really well tuned cinema, but still, nothing has yet to match just how good that mix was.

I'd love to get the cinema DTS disc synced to the Blu-ray and compare.

The AC3 track from the DVDs was pathetic.

Idea: 'The Dark Knight' - HD Widescreen Version - anyone interested?
Time

I've decided to give this project a whirl even though I only have very basic skills in virtualdub.  I was just gonna do a straight crop down to 2.39:1 but the framing just seemed way too tight.  I don't have the DVD for reference, but maybe I'll hunt it down.  Lord knows I don't have a print to use. :)

I also tried testing framing at 2.21:1 (70mm) and that seems to work better.  This would mean having to crop a bit off the sides for all the shots that aren't IMAX though.  I actually have setup my screen at this ratio because of the way my projector handles zooming, I don't have to physically move it in order to get 1.78 and 1.85 to fit right on the screen.  Sure, I'm cropping a little bit off the sides for all scope films, but it's barely noticeable during a screening.  Harmy's DE look amazing at 2.21:1!

Any advice on this would be welcome, as it is my first big leap into virtualdub with something that isn't just a trailer re-formatted for my common height screen.

I'd like to preserve the bit rate as much as possible, so any tips on how to re-compress when finished would be helpful.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)
Time

Just a handful of years ago all we had were LaserDiscs and poorly made DVDs.

People have prints now, and they're scanning them and fixing them up something good.

We shouldn't ever be complaining, but working to help expedite this the best we can.  There are some great minds here, and combined we can really make this dream come true.

Keep up the terrific work.  It's certainly going to be a day long remembered when we get final versions.

Because Star Wars...

Idea & Info: The Exorcist (Original Theatrical Release)

I have that but the MKV version, and it didn't compress very well.  Did the Dr. release a Blu Ray version?

Did you not find the green tint a bit too much?

I think a Blu-ray may have come out, but I couldn't find it.  Yeah, compression was an issue on my nearly 12' common height screen.  Watchable?  Sure.

I'm no color expert, especially on this film, but I found the experience enjoyable.

This was released at one point.  I've got it.  It's wonderful.

The mono track is just terrific too.  Made the film much more authentic, scary, and enjoyable.

I should say it's not without faults: the person who did this did add their own credit to the titles and credits in a way I find a bit obtrusive.

They did restore the red WB logo too...which is a HUGE plus in my book.

HALLOWEEN - Fixing the audio and re-creating 1999 color timing (Released)
Time

I opened it in Audacity and exported to a 48khz .wav

Do any audio experts know if that's good enough for re-sampling for Blu-ray?  The audio seems to still sound good this way, but I'm not playing it back on my full system.

I'll have to check sync later when I get a moment.

Is this also a new rip or from the same rip as the previous project?

This one seems fine so far.  Just doing some testing before tonight.  Honestly, some of what we could be noticing is potentially poor ADR.  The scene where the 3 girls are walking home is full of ADR.  Honestly, now that I'm paying so much attention to the audio, I'm noticing things I never have before.  The live audio seems to be perfect, but some of the ADR seems...I dunno...weird.

I'd have to compare it side by side with the DVD or LaserDisc itself and I'm not gonna have time to do that now.

Either way, fidelity is amazing and it's close enough to create a pleasant experience.

Totally.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)
Time

I haven't taken a listen to the 97 mix in ages...now I'm intrigued.

Do Empire and Jedi have the same flaw you mention, being fairly compressed sounding?

I'd imagine the DTS CD-ROM projects could provide a less lossy source, but yes, still lossy.

I support your decision to work with the 93 lossless source.

Pro-Logic II builds on the original Dolby Pro Logic (which in effect is Dolby Stereo in the home) with improved channel separation and a dedicated LFE track.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Pro_Logic

Since the source is still a Dolby Stereo mix though, the results aren't as profound as something with DPII in mind.  However, it does tend to sound better anyhow.  I've been using Pro Logic II to decode LaserDisc PCM tracks for awhile now and it does do much better channel separation as well as overall dynamic range in all channels.  Temple of Doom on Laserdisc is an undeniably delicious treat!

Just picked up 2.5 and listening to the "new" 70mm mix.  On my system, the difference is staggering.  Vastly superior channel separation.  This is great work Hairy_hen!

Can you remind me again, where are you pulling the LFE track from?  The 2004 mix or the new Blu-ray?

I'm really really looking forward to Empire and Jedi now!
