ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM

Dear Mr. Lucas,

My name is Billy and I am 8 years old and you made me cry by not releasing the unaltered original Star Wars trilogy in an anamorphic DVD format. My cat Snuckles is very sick and you made her cry too and she is 4 years old. Snuckles has a terminal illness and it would make her short life if you would release a hand-crafted digitally mastered version of the unaltered original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray format in time for both the premiere year for HD formats and the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. We are not sure, but she probably will not make it much past about the 15 of May next year.

My big brother is very mad at you and keeps using bad words when he’s talking about you, but I am not mad or use the bad words because you made Star Wars and I like Star Wars, but I am kinda mad because you changed Star Wars and even though you said it was better I still didn’t like it anymore. My big brother told me what garbage mattes were and I think just nobody likes them because they don’t have a very nice name. I think they should be called “force-lines” that way people would like them better because everybody likes the force.

Also, please release the original version of Star Wars in theaters and on IMAX.

Sincerelly,
BILLY(some backwards letters)
----------------------------------------------------------------

Should I include this line?:
I also liked the old versions and even though you said you liked the old films to match up with the prequel Star Wars movies I still like the old versions because the prequels sucked and I didn’t like them as much.

yeah like he'll take that seriously.

Actually, customs was inventented to keep that kind of thing out.

Oh and it's true the german way of life does definatly have some improvements over the american way of life - but it fails in so many other ways. It's true in NZ, America - and most other modern countries families now have a two-income household - and more and more people are hiring cleaners to clean the house, etc - and that is a bad thing. But no one likes German people, because that's a bad thing too.

The Official Lucasfilm Response
Time
Let's put this in perspective though. The negatives were digitally mastered in 1993, using the best available technology. The negatives were cleaned and fully restored to their best abilities, before the changes done in 1997 and 2004; when as has been repeadidly explained - new effects shots began to take the place of parts of the original negative. I'm prepared to believe the quality of that master may well be better then the quality they could pull from release prints - or other generational copies, unless they are willing to invest a lof of money into the restoration.

I believe that is a custom font created for the release, Bodega Sans is the closest font you'll find, and you can buy it at fonts.com.
What I should have said is that Bodega Sans is used as the font for the rest of the text on the 1993 definitive release. This information is earlier in this thread originally posted by Rikter/Cerevo, just re-posted by me. It's interesting how a lot of earlier cover designs you can't download.

Chris, most of the forums I go to are ones that only adults go to. This is an exception. You are shallow if you're going to insult Dath_Evil because of his age. Just because he's 13 doesn't mean that's a point of argument. You know, as I mentioned before - starship troopers has fantastic CGI, I forgot to mention that all the space ships in the movie were done with models just like in the original star wars trilogy ... and they look freaking unbelievable.

Listen I don't agree that the P.T. should have been made to look like the O.T. and I'll tell you why - the P.T. was made 1999-2005. The O.T. was made 1977-1983, so of course they're going to look different. It doesn't mean I agree with everything in the P.T. or the way in which they were made, but using today's technology and building off past experience, and moving forward is only natural. The movies were never ever going to "look the same". And they don't have to.

I have a friend who's 26 and he thinks golem looks awesome because he's CGI. Personally I think the effect would be more believable and better if they used a thin child to play the part covered in layers of make-up. CGI just does not look real, no matter how good it looks. Golem is a freaking eye-sore because he's not really there, and you can tell. When you watch the movie you can tell that it's not real and that it's only CGI. The should only use CGI when you're not going to be able to tell the difference. For instance, when I watch Starship Troopers all the bugs in the movie look "real" to me. I know they're CGI, but they look freaking awesome. I haven't seen Jurassic Park (the original) for years now, but I could never tell the difference between the CGI dinosaurs and the ones that were actually built (though i could in the sequel). And it's true, stop-motion looks awful compared to CGI - for instance watch the original Terminator movie where the Terminator is reduced to the endoskeleton near the end ... CGI would undoubtedly look better if the movie was made today (though T3 sucked and had some terrible CGI effects in it).

Yoda looks better as a puppet. He looks more real.

Lucas has major issues. He's very creative, very smart and a very good storyteller - but he has major issues. When he visited the set for the 5 points in the movie Gangs of New York he was quoted as saying "you can do that in a computer now". And nearly all the sets in the PT are... CGI. But Gangs of New York was shot in a real set - and it looks real. Some of the CGI sets in the P.T. don't look great - but many of them do. The point is that CGI is not the answer to "everything". And it's certainly not the answer to older movies. I don't want to see the early James Bond movies edited to match the special effects of the movies today. I mean come on.

Info & Help: Looking for... Raiders Of The Lost Ark - on HDTV

I wonder if you could recreate the theatrical cut from the two. I mean it wouldn't require that much editing, just a handful of shots were actually changed.

Chris, I know you're taking a bashing here. But you seem to be missing the point, even if CGI is better, it wasn't at the time the Star Wars Trilogy was made. To make matters worse, Lucas isn't even the director for Empire or Jedi ... so making decisions to revisit the films and update the effects using todays technology is something that really shouldn't be his to make in the first place. Remember E.T.? You had to buy the S.E. to get the original with that too - but at least Spielberg was the director of the movie. And he didn't claim to be "finishing" the movie off, at least he was honest about it - he said he wanted to present it for today's audience.

I'm sure you've heard of film colourization. I don't think I can say I've ever watched a B&W movie and thought "wow I wish this was in COLOUR!!!!!"

Maybe they should go back to Jurassic Park 1 and 2 and raise the level of believability to Jurassic Park 3? Did you know the only reason the effects are so refined in Jurassic Park 3 is because of the experience they had making the previous movies... heck it's the same with Star Wars. There's a difference in the quality of the special effects between Star Wars, Empire and Jedi... and there's a difference between Phantom, Clones and Sith too.

The movie was made in 1977.... it does not have to be censored. They can remake it if they like, like they did with the Omen (great movie) - or The Hills Have Eyes (great remake there too)... Start from scratch if you want it at the "level" of the P.T.

...

Did you know when I saw the omen remake with a mate on the 6th, he said (he says a lot of silly things) that 1. he thought the movie was a rip-off of final destination (which is so stupid as the original predates it by more then two decades), and 2. that he didn't find the idea of showing a dead body on the cover of a newspaper to be realistic because papers wouldn't be allowed to do that. And I'm like W.T.F.??? Why should they have to censor reality, that's so stupid (and dangerous thinking really)... it's thinking like that which is why all the fireworks I could buy are lame... and we can't have the good ones... and hell I hear in other places, such as most of australia you can't even buy ANY fireworks! W.T.F. is the world coming to? And get this, the RSPCA is always trying to ban them because they distress DOGS! DOGS! W.T.F.? I don't know what they've been smoking if they think that dogs should be put ahead of HUMANS!! People can't have a bit of fun and enjoyment with their friends and communities because of DOGS?! By the way dogs annoy the hell out of me so much by barking over their fences all the time, that I just don't see why they can distress and annoy the hell out of people who don't even own dogs... but according to the RSPCA people who don't even want to own dogs have to make provisions for dogs that OTHER people own - the same dogs that annoy them all year? Hell! W.T.F.??!

The Omen was made in 1976. The Hills Have Eyes in 1977. Star Wars - 1977. Remake it, don't re-edit it. Or don't remake it, it's fine the way it is in its original version.

I'd rather not get it from sites like revengeismydestiny.com. I heard there was a german DVD, but I didn't know it had english subtitles - also would it be uncut in Germany? The movie is pretty full-on.

Any Sugestions on A DVD Cover Program?
Time
Darth, real professionals often prefer Photoshop, but that doesn't mean it'll be best for you... paint shop pro is preferred by many "lesser" designers, and there are other alternatives out there as well. I suggest you get the trial versions and find which one suits you before shilling out any dough. You can also get the freeware alternatives (as already mentioned) - and if those suit you then you don't need to spend any money... but they may not suit you.

In other words, get the pan & scan version.
Are you sure that the P&S release will be widescreen for the OOT? I can't believe he releases them in P&S in america... it's almost as if he's flipping off his home country!
