Request: a 'Serenity' movie fan edit? - ADM??
Time
Just understand, at this time a year ago I knew nothing about digital video. Nada. My desire to see Star Wars the way I wanted it was my sole motivator to learn what I learned. I say this in hopes of inspiring everybody to follow suit. With time and patience, anybody can pull it off.

hear hear.

Now of course you are right, everybody could be doing this, but it seems there is a vast difference between people, who want something done and the people doing it. There was this guy on the MFN forums, who started his edit of Matrix Reloaded and he was very ambitious about his project, talked and discussed his ideas a lot, and he really started his edit and came close to finsihing it even, but then adobe premiere did not work properly and failed to render his movie. And that was the last thing he ever wrote in this forum. He just gave it up. Many people don't even start, although they have ideas. I think there are few people, who are willing to put the amount of time into their project it needs to get finished. Whenever I tell someone about my "hobby" they raise their eyebrows and say: "interesting... and what do you do for a living?"

unfortunately I think that the direction we are aiming it will not be the audience getting more material on their hands they can use for fanedits at all. Currently there are only a few fanedits around and still only few poeple realized their existence. But you and some others including my group are trying hard to change that. The better our edits get and the more attention they receive the more likely the industry will stop feeding us with usable material. Not to mention legal actions which are currently not much of a problem obviously. (I wish there were deleted scenes for War of the Worlds).

Notice there isn't a big interest in re-edits for Spider-Man or Lord of the Rings or even the new Batman movie. Good films aren't being screwed around with.

...I know it is a little late to reply on that, but anyway, ADM: I disagree ;-) There was this not to well done trailer for the hobbit, made from TLOTR pieces and some computer game music as far as I remember and that one was downloaded at least 100000 times although everybody knew it was fake. Editing good or great movies is very different to editing the bad ones. A good one is maybe not possible to be improved, but it may be watched from a new point of view and therefore receive attention by an audience hungry for more. Personally I would love to edit Spiderman and get rid of most of the green cobold which by far reminded me to much on Power Rangers, but that is simply not enough. But if someone would be able to get the 6 hour workprint edition of Return of the King, which was the first final cut they had... I think the interest would be gigantic, don't you?

It is always nice to find out that some people are commenting on our edits. Here is a nice one from Mike:

Creasy was done masterfully. While your take on the story was interesting but a bit hurried, it was much better than the original, and cleverly edited at that. High Tension just freaked me out - that first "blowjob" scene was crazy, hehehe. Keep up the good work.

Time

an edit noun. A version of a movie, song, or other artwork that has been edited by someone other than the original artist, especially by a fan of the work or artist.

Example Citation:
Thanks to digital technology, a delightful new art form emerged this year: the fan edit. Devotees of the pop singer Bjork, for example, have begun running her songs through their computers, tweaking the beats and instrumentation, then posting hundreds of “remixed” versions on the Web. Some of these edits are tone-deaf; others, however, trump the original arrangements. And this summer, Mike J. Nichols, a “Star Wars” addict living in Santa Clarita, Calif., used his Macintosh to make a series of merciful cuts to “The Phantom Menace” — most notably, the virtual elimination of the irksome Jar Jar Binks. Fans who obtained a copy of Nichols’s “Phantom Edit” through the Internet hailed the arrival of a vastly improved (if not yet good) movie.
—Daniel Zalewski, “Thinking These Thoughts Is Prohibited,” The New York Times, January 6, 2002

Earliest Citation:
With its obvious parallels to the Napster debate, the shifting of power from the filmmakers to the fans is both disturbing and exciting. It is disturbing because there will no longer be any sort of quality control, aside from the natural assumption that the best “fan edits” will be the ones that get passed around the most. We may have 100 different versions of the next “Star Wars,” and 95 of them will be sub-par.

Idea: Highlander?
Time
With these movies from the 80s it is often the same for me. I remember them as good or even great movies. One of them was HIGHLANDER, cool fighting, nice time-warp story, great score. But having seen this a year ago I had to realize that times change... bad acting overall, the score unbearable and the fighting scenes... not worth being mentioned, but of course worst of all: Christopher Lambert. But still, when I watched this in the 80s it was great. Nostalgia is cool sometimes.

nice post Johnny, I like that vacuum theory. But personally I think it is not that, but just because home technology makes it possible. Philosphically spoken i think needs start with possibilities. Of course some lunatics fancy about fancy stuff, but most people desire only what they know others got. So I think that the need for special edited movies came with their existence and maybe the vacuum was created by the people who made fan edits, becuase before no one knew there was one... another weird sunday.

THE FAN EDIT CONTEST HAS A WINNER !!! REVIEWS IN OFF TOPIC FORUM
Time
I still have no idea how the region code happened to be ont he DVD, just checked my version in DVD Decrypter and it said "REGION 1; 2; 3; 4; 5; 6; 7; 8;". But there was no need to change the region code still, just install "anydvd" or "dvd regionfree" and the region code should not be a problem anymore. Anyway, I hope you still can enjoy the edition. Gosh, how I hate it when problems occur where you the least expect them.

hmmmm...... that is really a pity. The sound is mp2 on this one. There was never a complaint about his before. Currently I have no idea how this could be fixed except for maybe trying to play it with videolan client VLC (just to try it).

ADM, and I am looking really forward to seeing your Pearl Harbor edition, because that sounded very promising. Pear harbor was on our to-do list either, but if you perfected it, there won't be any more need to it. I hope it will soon show up on myspleen.

it will not contain micro organisms, not at the beginning and not at the end... therefore we will not be saved. Tim Robbins' part will also be greatly reduced. We are currently not sure, if we want spoken words at the beginning and the end or just text or whatever, but this time there will be no stupid everything-is-going-to-be-fine-even-if-it's-impossible-trust-your-pal-Steven end. We will include several excerpts from other movies, but hopefully you won't realize that a bit.

"13 growing to 30"
this project is still in the planning. I currently just know a few scenes that are not going to make it into our edition so far:
Jenna as 30-years old flirting with a kid
Mattie calling "Jenna" when they take a walk (don't serve her moods, Mattie!)
Jenna suggesting to play games with her boyfriend (this scene will be somewhat tricky to edit for context reasons)
Tom-Tom's POISE article
Jenna's POISE article (only the publication, not the making, this must stay in)
the taxi ride with Chris

We are still deciding about deleted scenes to be taken in or left out.

Any suggestions?

Creasy is up now for 15 hours straight ...and what do we have here? 6 people are downloading it so far. Man, our last edition must have really sucked ;-) At least we can be sure that these 6 people know what they are downloading. It is the first time, the words "fanmade edition" are written in the title. I wonder if 2 or 3 years ago this would have interested me...
