How Lucas can satisfy the fans.
Time
I have to say after getting the OOT on DVD that I was presently surprised and I am happy with the new releases. That doesn't mean I am satisfied though. I have been reading a lot of stuff on various boards, people saying the fans will never be satisfied. This is so untrue it is very easy to satisfy the fans, if Lucas would just pay as much respect to the OOT that he does to the updates I would be more then satisfied. That means doing a transfer of the OOT using all the technology available but respecting the original as they were, it is that simple. Do you agree?

2006 OT DVD: Are my eyes deceiving me?
Time
Starwars.com confirmed they used a black R2 for bluescreenshots. The mystery is solved!

I know why he was originally black, my question is why would they fix it in Jedi and Empire, but not fix it in ANH? I think it was an oversight. In fact even "Darth Editous" with his spectacular upgraded addition seems to have missed this. (That is not meant as a criticism), He caught many things the LF guys did not and some things I didn't even know about.

The Blob!

One thing you notice when you look at the update information on the Star Wars site is that the color white does not exist in the OT anymore, everything ether has a mauve or blue tint to it. It would be almost comical if it won’t so sad. I mean these are the most popular movies in history and they can't even get the colors right. How about how salmon tinted all the explosions are in ANH? All the snow is blue in ESB and then when you get to the space slugs teeth they are pink? What the hell. You got the Disney animator going back to the original cells to get the color right and Lucas for all his digital guiros can't even get the color right, and I don't believe this is a creative decision maybe some of it but some of it is just crap, plain and simple! Add that to the fact that they screwed up the soundtrack, and the fact that people here have done much better job fixing things on there own free time and it is a crime. Anyway there is my rant.

Star Trek gets better treatment than Star Wars...
Time
I tend to disagree. This is not like SW where we don't have preteen versions of the originals, TOS has been released on DVD in very nice box sets. To me this is just fun and I will be interested in watching it. If I want to see the originals I always have my box sets. Plus there won't be any story/character changes the likes we have seen Lucas do. So no harm no foul as far as I am concerned. Truth is I wouldn't have a problem with the upgraded versions of SW if care had been taken to preserve the original and it was available for us on in good quality on DVD.

Take a look at http://www.trekenhanced.com/ and you may change your mind. If not, don't watch, get the DVD's and watch to your hearts content. I am sure the price will be discounted now just like TNG was a few months back. Plus this is a good idea to maybe get Trek on the right track something I think it has not been on since deep space nine IMHO. TOS was always the best and hopefully this will attract a lot of new fans.

Here is a fan made version proof of concept by a professional CG artist who had done work on Trek that works very well.

http://www.trekenhanced.com/

Here is the original proof of concept by which doesn't look as good but was done earlier however I don't think they should be changing designs like was done by these guys.

Your Greatest Star Wars Day.
Time
After reading “DocLathropBrown” excellent thread about ESB and how the audience reacted to the big reveal I started thinking about that great day when I saw ESB for the first time. I decided this was probably the best SW day for me as a fan and wanted to here what you guys thought were your fondest memories.

So here is my story and there are spoilers though I doubt anyone hasn't seen the movies on this forum. First off my parents were recently divorced and I was 9. This was one of the first things my Dad and I did on our now recurring weekends together. In general this was probably one of the hardest times of my childhood as I was just getting use to the fact that my Dad would not be living with us anymore. There was still a lot of tension between my parents when my weekly handoff was made and this is one of the few fond memories I have of that time. I had been tremendously excited about seeing the movie all day but there was the true possibility that we would not be able to get in. There would be long lines being opening night at the Menlo Park New Jersey’s Twin Cinema. Twin meaning there were only two huge screens, not the 12 screen showings that are common now on opening day, and this cinema was showing an exclusive 70mm print. Sadly MPTC is no longer around; it was a truly beautiful theater. Anyway I can remember rushing my Dad when he got there so we would be able to get in that night, "stop talking to Mom lets go!”

When we finally got there my heart sank as the lines were all the way around the building. Like all of you I was a huge fan, had all the figures and had been waiting for what seemed like half my young life for the next chapter. When you are 9 years old 3 years is a third of your life anyway, and half of what you can remember. When we parked I quickly hurried to get in line praying that we could get into a showing. I remember being wide eyed at the older fans dressed up in costumes, this being my first of may experience with creative SW fans, plus there were teenagers there man this was cool. After waiting for what was probably hours but seemed like days the manager came out and performed the ritual of counting people in line. Finally as I was about to P- my pants he pointed to the couple behind us and stated that would be the cut off point for the next showing. That right we were the last people in line for that showing. Next the line started moving and we were in the cool of the air-conditioning. The theater was a classic big cinema house with all the trimmings, the kind that was built when movies were the only form of entertainment in this country and my young mind this only heightened the enjoyment this was a palace. I had never been to a theater like this before and it was to my father’s credit that he knew how important this film was to me and took me to such a great place to see it. So anyway the second wonderful thing that happened that night was the fact that as my father and I were following the line to the seats one of the attendants opened the balcony (yes they had balconies in those days). I pointed this out to my Dad and we rushed up the stairs. Needless to say I got to sit in the first row of the balcony on opening day of ESB to see an exclusive 70mm print!

The next great thing about that day was that I saw another kid there who had a comic book that seemed to be about the movie. After successfully begging my Dad to buy me one at the concession stand he left to go get the usual popcorn and movie fair that goes with the event. I can still remember sitting there with the anticipation of seeing the movie I had just seen highlights of on Good Morning America that morning. What were those big elephant things, how cool was this movie going to be! A few moments later my Dad returned with my prized Comic and some goodies which I could care less about. I only had time to briefly open it and look in wonder at the strange creature that Luke was riding before the lights went down to a huge roar of the crowd. This was eclipses by the roar when the words Star Wars descended on the screen. “Try to read the scroll as fast as you can before it is gone” kind of hard to do at 9.

The things I remember about watching the film were the fact that when every hero was introduced the crowed cheered but I seem to remember the crowd cheering the loudest for Vader's intro. When Luke single handily destroyed the At-At the crowed went crazy. One thing that is distinctly in my mind is when Luke hit Vader on the side of his armor with his Lightsaber during there battle at the end people cheered only to be quickly silent when Luke’s hand is chopped off. The crowd was stunned when the big reveal is related. Personally I didn’t believe it, I remember reading somewhere that a worried Lucas asked a psychologist what kid’s reactions would be and that kids under 10 wouldn’t believe it, however older kids that had more experience with disappointments of life were more likely to, and I tend to agree. I remember even when I was watching ROTJ where Luke asks “Is Darth Vader My Father” I said out loud “no” while Yoda said “yes”. I was so sure it couldn’t be true. Looking back it makes sense but my young mind didn’t want to accept it. After Luke changes Vader back the movies were much deeper then you standard good guy bad guy fair, but it pretty much ended any excitement in playing with my figures though.

I remember leaving the theater in stunned disbelief. I called my Mom that night totally in shock and hurriedly told her all about it. As she tells the story she was really upset about the divorce having seeing my Dad that night but as I was talking to her I said “guess what Mom there is still hope there is another movie coming out” according to her she found a much deeper meaning in my statement. There was always hope in life.

So that is my ESB story. I saw it many times later that year, my sister took me, one of the first things she did with her new driver’s license. I also had my Grandma take me and I remember explaining every character to her in a half empty movie theater probably to the annoyance of the other people sitting there. She told my mom she enjoyed it though she had no idea what was going on. I also read that comic book to death. Remember they didn’t even have Videos in that day all we got were comics. I would be interested to hear some other stories from other fans about those days. As we all know the 70’s and 80’s really were the best time to be a kid.

Alternate Endings For The Trilogy....
Time
After Leia dies for no apparent reason for the second time. Luke Confronts Vader in the rain while multiple copies cheer, they both fly in the air and finally it seems as though for the second time Luke is dead however then Luke suddenly recovers and defeats the emperor and Vader. In a complete rehash of the first movie.

Cut to Han and Lando sitting in a park on the forest moon of Endor.

Han comments on the sunset, and asks if Luke will ever return.

Now ending a promising franchise like that would really suck.

Why I'm not so worried anymore
Time
Because your screen is smaller the lack of detail will be less noticeable. You must have noticed that the bars at the top and bottom were bigger on a non-anamorphic screen. However on my 57 TV the soft picture is very noticeable. I am less worried however as I can't believe that there will be a time when LFL will need money and at that point we will get our anamorphic transfers. If they could release the films in one color at a time and make money they would.

You should check on this board

http://www.aimoo.com/forum/login/login.cfm?id=380603

it is a Sports Tape Trading site but I remember a while back that someone was doing the same thing. There is a member on this board who has archive news footage from almost all the major newsworthy events in TV history. Post on the non-sports trading section, or do a search on 911.

What is the rarest video in your collection?
Time
I have the Complete Battle of the Planets Series Japanese sound with subtitles, not the greatest but the best that is available at this point. Ladies and Gentleman the Rolling Stones concert video from 1972, the band when it really was the greatest rock and roll band in the world. If you have never seen them live from the Nick Taylor period then you will be very surprised how good they were. I was. (I also have the apple acetate of "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" which has the 3 verse of Sympathy for the Devil on CD very rare)

I have a very good quality of DVD of Super Bowl 3 when my Jets won their only Super Bowl with Joe Namath at the helm. I also have a very rare Color broadcast of Mohammed Ali vs. Brian London from 1966. It is cool to see Ali at his very peek in Color video, although Color TV was still in it infancy and it is not as vivid as today.

In defense of George Lucas!
Time
zombie84 if you take you premise one step further and I tend to agree with you though I don't know if Lucas is intentionally doing this or if it is just he can't help himself. But if except that premise than it is even more interesting that now the fans of the movies are also taking the movies and changing them, almost like a new form of art actually. The same thing is happening with music, look at the gray album as an example, and many hip-hop stars are releasing acapella versions of there raps so people can edit and create new stuff with it.

Pretty cool.

In defense of George Lucas!
Time
Dude I am not worshiping him. I am just say no George no Star Wars, No Indy, No Industrial Light and Magic, Lucas Arts, and on and on. Many great people helped with the process but he started it, and I am really grateful to him for that. I agree with people who say he is stubborn and over did the prequels and changes his mind a lot. I personally hated the Han shot first, and especially the terribly badly executed Hayden-head, and even if it had been executed correctly it made no sense. But give the guy a break, and I hate to say it but you take it too personally when it is said, "he baiting us and making fun of us", I just don't see it. He wanted to change something he felt was a distraction, but what he doesn't realize is it was more a personal distraction to him not the fans. That doesn't make him the bad guy destroying people’s childhood like some people make him out to be.

Personally I think someone who says stuff like that invites to be criticized you are taking this whole thing way to personal. When you say he better get it right or else, or else what, the most you can do is not buy the product. I can understand you frustration but you don’t even know that it is going to be bad and is sounds like you are making threats. Then when I hear some people say stuff like Lucas is an ass, or he is evil or stuff to that level of anger, it is upsetting because I am a member of this site and I don’t want to be associated with vitriol like that, and I don’t want the site to be thought of that way ether frankly. At the most you could say he ignored us, but he didn't personally set out to piss us off. I can understand people being annoyed that he didn't consider our feelings but that is also his right, and we have a right to then not bother to buy the product he releases and complain and ask for the original. This site was created specifically for us to give voice to our frustrations, but it undermines our credibility and our argument to say hateful things. Eventually no one will listen and people who are on our side will tune us out. (By the way I am not saying this to anyone in particular because I don’t even know who said stuff like that I only know I have read a lot of it lately.) Plus we look like idiots when we finally get some progress on this and we all start complaining before we even see if it what we want or not.

Now the guy is going to give us the product that we have asked for so actually he has heard our issue and is trying to accommodate us, to me that make it all fine. What I don't understand is when people make this into a personal slight. Like Abe Vigoda said it's was always business never personal.

In defense of George Lucas!
Time
A couple of things I feel like I have to say here. I have been on here forever. I don't post a lot but I do every once and a while, and know some of you by email and such. I am really surprised and disappointed by the reaction here by a few of us. I mean the specific purpose of this web site was to get the originals released and it finally happened and people just start to assume the worst.

This is why us nerds (and I include myself in that nerd list) get a bad name, and frankly I just don't understand it. Can you just wait and see? If it sucks they you can complain, I however don't think it is going to suck, it may not be perfect but it will be better then we have ever had. The reason why I think this, and I don't know any more then the rest of you, is because that would be a horrible mistake if they looked like crap. LF would get so much flack that it would just be dumb. They are usually too smart to do stuff like that, reversed soundtrack excluded, and I will always believe that that was a horrible mistake that they were too embarrass to admit.

Secondly even if it was the greatest release ever I believe that some people would still bitch and complain. I think if there had never been SE many of those same people would be bitching and complaining that they need to clean up the mat lines and all the rest. Where is my SE! George Lucas give me my SE like all these other directors do. At this point I have decided that they are not rational complaints so why even bother to listen. Who complains about something that they have never even seen like it is a fact?

One of the things that bothers me the most is the complete lack of respect for Lucas, the vitriol that is spewed at times here is really hard to take. When I was young and my parents were fighting and finally divorced, Lucas gave me something that I could escape to during all that. Now in hindsight at 33 I can say how grateful I am that I had those stories in my life, and that they were so positive. Look at what many kids have today, some of the music and games are sending terrible message that will not really help these kids in the real world. The movies introduced me to Classical music at a very young age something that I might not have been interested in but because of Williams’s soundtracks I grew to love many classical composers. Think of all the movies, games, books, general fun that came for GL creativity for all of us to enjoy. The figures were such a part of my early childhood and I am sure many of yours. Saving up my allowance every two weeks and then going to Toy R Us was the greatest thrill as a child. Remember searching through rows of figures. Remember the first time seeing Empire Strikes Back? Remember Indiana Jones? All of that was because of only George Lucas.

In a sense George Lucas, and Steven Spealburg were like the Beatles of our generation, and like the Beatles they did it to make money, and I can't hold it agents them. The Beatles were not perfact but do people hate John Lennon because of Yoko, well I guess some assholes did, and one truly giant one I can think of. Anyway I'm sure I will get to enjoy Star Wars with my children and there children to come. Hopefully when I am gone some future generation of mine will get some of my hand me down figures or some object and when they watch the movies they will still connect with me in some way. Your Great-Great Grand father used to play with these toys, he loved these movies and they will say, you mean he actually played with these with his hands? He watched the movies on a screen, but that’s another story. Anyway that is pretty cool and George Lucas is responsible for that.

I know we all were disappointed with the prequels and with the fact that he wouldn't release the movies like we wanted them and that is understandable, but I don't understand hating someone who has been so involved indirectly with all of our lives. Even now we all are enjoying talking, debating, recreating (which his company has let us do) these films. I can't bash him, sorry the guy is great.

I will always remember how sucky that time in my life was but I will also always remember how great it was falling asleep to my soundtrack album, or movie dialogue tape that I copied from my friends album. Playing with my figures, looking at the pictures at my calendars. Trying to figure out what was happening in the previews for Empire. Those were great times man.

All I ever have to say to or about George Lucas is Thanks.

PS, I have to defend this site most of us truly love the movies are grateful to George, and are thrilled that the originals are finally being released. Just like GL has made some mistakes and that shouldn't spoil all that he has accomplished, some bad apples here shouldn't spoil most of the good people here.

The Official 2006 Discs Will Be No Better Than What We Have!
Time
I don't agree about the spin, if this set outsells the original release on DVD the press will defiantly spin it that the reason why it did better is that the public supports the original versions then the new ones. I don't think LFL will be able to deny that. Who care really if we get the original? You can always throw out the new ones if you want. Personally I am hoping they correct the f-ed up mix so that it can be used to marry the 5.1 mix to the original footage. Most of all I am looking forward to some of the projects that will come out of here.
