Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

So uhm. Earthbound virtual console. Link to the Past sequel. Hardcore gamers that haven't given up on Nintendo just got some serious wish fulfillment.

Earthbound Virtual Console? Link to the Past sequel? I mean I'm happy, make no mistake, but is nostalgia REALLY the only way Nintendo can get hardcore gamers back? I'm kind of sick of that marketing trend. HD remakes outsell new games plenty of times now. Are we so accustomed to what we once loved that we're willing to pay top-dollar for copouts?

Well, first off, I thank you for the respect. Second, I wasn't calling you anti-patriotic. You're entitled to your views, even if I disagree with them. I was calling Warb a patriot in the sense that he thinks you're insulting the United States by bringing conspiracy theories into this tragedy - and for the record, I do agree. I'm just not as passionate about that as he is.

BioShock!!! (1, 2 and Infinite and SPOILERS)
Time

Appreciate the edit, xhonzi. Good catch by you.

In response to your question, I'm not sure. With Bioshock, I've up until now been able to write it off as just another shooter (you can chew me out if you want, but - regardless of whatever tricks Bioshock pulls - it's tough to convince me otherwise. They're just not my kind of game normally.) However, partly because they were getting criticized for the dudebro marketing, it was hard to ignore. I kept seeing article after article after article about Bioshock.

So I looked at the trailers. I watched a few spoiler-free reviews. And something about that world captured me. The other two didn't do that. Maybe it's the graphical style's bright colors. Maybe it's the fact that I actually bothered to learn more about it this time. Maybe it's because my actual gamer friends just won't shut up about how great it is. Maybe the word maybe shouldn't have started all of those sentences.

All I know is I can't wait to pick it up. I just have to save some cash... and it might be smart to wait until the end of the semester.

Youtube's new "tape mode" button
Time

Bah, it hasn't shown up on my youtube yet! I even tried incognito Chrome to see if it was a cache thing, but must not be. Hopefully it's around long enough that I at least get to play with it.

Damn it, I still miss textp.

edit-it just showed up. Boy, am I glad I came around after tapes improved in quality. I don't think I've ever had the... pleasure... of having to watch a movie that looks like this. Not even a recorded cassette. Still, it's fun to watch Star Wars clips like this.

Info: Films re-color timed on video releases
Time

I think with Blade Runner I'm ok with the change since the other cuts are available... and they've been honest about it the whole time. Also, going by those Superman shots, I mostly prefer the theatrical release - whichever that is. I always remember associating Reeve with a teal-ish suit. Didn't they even do that intentionally so that blue screen effects would be easier? Or did they give him a darker one instead? To be honest, I forget... and I tried to look it up, but I can't find anything to support it one way or the other.

Ending the show before it's scripted conclusion, with a vague promise of some "bonus" stuff down the line, is not the best way to build goodwill with nervous fans. Believe it or not, Disney isn't always universally beloved as a company.

And if they're only after the kids, they've blown four billion bucks for nothing.

This is one of those odd times where I'm going to put my trust in good ole' GL. While the prequels were much more action-oriented than the OT, other than TPM I certainly wouldn't call them kids-only entertainment. Hell, ROTS is PG13 (it really shouldn't be, but that's beside the case.) Since he did the treatment for the sequel trilogy I expect an all-ages demographic. Can't speak for merchandizing or side projects though.

I can't really fathom Disney's game plan at this point. Why not just finish the episodes as intended and make them available online?

They're going to fumble this more than when they bought the Muppets, if they keep doing things which only confuse and frustrate the fans. "Bonus material" also has a familiar stench about it...

What did they do wrong with the Muppets outside of indefinitely postponing any future releases of the TV show? I always enjoyed the Disney movies, even if they lacked some of the Jim Henson charm. Also, at least they tried with Muppets Tonight...
