Info: my "The Making of Star Wars" based Color Correction
Time

<Moved from another board>

I bought the Complete Saga Bluray collection this week, mostly for the Extras disks, which ive enjoyed watching the deleted scenes from the OT on, I took a good look at the bonus Documentaries disk though, which includes a very good preservation of The Making of Star Wars, produced in 1977.

On this documentary there are many full scenes taken from the movie Star Wars, including scenes from Ben’s hut, the falcon, Darth Vader v Ben and the scene where the ‘I find your lack of faith disturbing’ scene. I made a few minor CC changes to remove colour bias and what do you know! the colour timing of these captures are very good!

Look at screenshots in this Album:
http://imgur.com/a/65Hs6

I think that future CC changes could be matched based on these as an accurate source captured in 1977, just take a look at the scene within Ben’s hut, this would be a great reference to fix Team Negative 1’s Silver Screen Edition.

It also shos that Vader’s sabre didnt have much of a red tone, and that the engine blast from the Falcon actually has a blue tone around the edge as they leave the Death Star.

What do you think?

Me too, that would be awesome! I hope the deleted scenes don’t contradict any scenes in the movie though.

As what ive heard from news articles, the film was totally finished but the cut was way too long for the Cinema, so they just cut out the snowspeeder chase, some political exposition with Leia and Kylo on the Millenium Falcon for the final cut

So when Chewie, Finn, and Han are looking for Rey and running around in Starkiller base, which is presumably enormous, and of which there is zero indication that they’ve memorized the complete blueprint/layout of, they suddenly spot her across this huge chasm. SECONDS LATER, they are IN THE SAME ROOM WITH HER. THE BASE IS THE SIZE OF A SMALL CONTINENT.

Look at this, Finn’s pointing at the thermal oscillator here. In the movie, that looked about 300-500 metres wide from all the shots we see from inside it and the close up shots from the aerial strikes by the X Wings.

So therefore if the scale shown in this hologram is supposed to be accurate, Starkiller base is a VERY VERY small planet, many times smaller than The Moon, with probably a 40km radius, making the internal base small enough to see each other by chance quite likely

EDIT: looking up the canon diameter of the Death Star, they claim that its 120Km radius, so, they fucked up with the scaling of Starkiller base basically

To all of you who have criticisms that The Resistance have magically got the plans to Starkiller Base, they aren’t the technical details like with the Death Star. I’ve watched that scene about 5 times now, its only a surface scan that a recon ship was aparently able to do, undetected and in the short timeframe since it blew up Hosnian Prime.

So its not unlikely that they’d have the data, but we do have a contradiction when Finn points at the thermal oscillator and somehow the hologram shows that its piped to the planet core, which would not have happened if it was just a surface scan.

JEDIT: Watching further into the scene, how is it possible that they know Illenuim is next, or that TFO is charging the weapon again, they didnt know how it was charged in the first place, until Finn said.

Maybe they could tell its pipe was pointing right at them ready to shoot 😉

Some pointless issues:

Why after the opening crawl, and panning down to Jakku in the background, WHY do the troop transports fly towards the CAMERA, i.e. IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION

Also when Threepio realises hes cockblocking, BB-8 goes with him not INTO the rescue ship, but into the wreckage of Maz’s Castle? but then Chewie has some intelligence and actually goes into the ship

It must be hard for those two to know that they’re responsible for the troubles now facing everyone - though the movie doesn’t acknowledge this. They had a son, and whoops, all the rebels victories are now undone and everything is right back to where they were.

If you have read some of the expanded literature out there, The republic is certainly the major power in this time, the first order is a fringe organisation who have territory. They pretty much have that single star destroyer, which is itself illegal under some embargo. The ‘resistance’ is a Private Military Corps funded by leia outside of the Republic to monitor the First Order becuse the New Republic is apparently ignorant of the First Order, or unwilling to aknowlege their rising power

hmm not much in the movie to like. one of the dumbest was line “thats the republic”, soo the republic consists of about ten planets?

I don’t remember who said this and what exactly they said, can you elaborate?

It was Finn, he comes rushing to Han Solo shouting “It was the republic! The First Order, they’ve done it! Where’s Rey?”

DESPECIALIZED EDITION QUALITY CONTROL THREAD - REPORT ISSUES HERE
Time

REPORT-ROTJ-v2.0-WP

00:24:25 - 00:27:58 - The entire rancor sequence has a heavily blue tint and is often quite dark

00:27:46 - very dark shot of the crying man, its almost black.

00:29:09 - lots of flickering

00:36:12 - 00:36:18 - The only difference in the bluray is the new composited shadow, why not use a CCed shot from the bluray and roto out the shadow?

00:36:19 - 00:36:24 - The film scan of leaving the planet needs alot of cleanup, however the bluray looks much sharper, why not just use a layer blend with the bluray as the base layer and the film scan on top for the colour

01:39:39 - 01:39:41
This shot of the falcon flying by the blockade runner seems to be horribly low resolution, with a lot of sharpening applied. Its my favourite shot, visually, in the movie and the official bluray version has much higher quality, what has happened?

01:40:47 - The shot of the Emperor’s face is far too dark when compared to the GOUT, and even darker than the Bluray, which is already darker than the GOUT.

Also the entire sequence of Darth Vader’s unmasking, I believe from the new transfer, is far too dark, has too much contrast and has a heavy blue tint, for example:

01:59:41 - you are unable to see Vader’s scar on the back of his head, in fact his whole head is a silhouette, on the GOUT and Bluray this detail is clear. If the Team Negative 1 transfer doesnt have the detail in it when brightened, it shouldnt be used.

After all that, I applaud your efforts, ive never seen Lapti Nek in such high quality!

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

 • Towards the middle of the film, in the Map Room of the Rebel Base, Leia has a secret “up her sleeve,” involving her own weapon called “The Sledgehammer” by the production.
 • Without storyboards, “The Sledgehammer” is difficult to understand but appears to be a kamikaze-like craft capable of taking down Star Destroyer sized spacecrafts.
 • Leia is proud of this weapon.

Looking back at an old post, I bought “The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” so ive seen all the ideas they had for the movie. The sledghammer was this wedge shaped ship that would force its way though an energy shield to make an opening, before opening its hanger door to let fighters out on the other side.

I’ve got other info if people want
