First Impressions of the OOT ...
Time
I was actually pleasantly surprised by the quality of these new OOT DVDs, and am able
to enjoy the movies without being too distracted by any deficiencies that may be
inherent in the transfer.

These are better than anything I have owned thus far, although I am obviously aware
that something of better quality could be produced through using a brand new transfer
and anamorphic presentation.

Star Wars Limited Edition Screen Captures.
Time
I have my copies of this now, and with all the issues this release may have, I would still prefer to sit through this than the dreadful SE’s any day of the week!

Heck, I would pick any OUT ld transfer over the SE, even If it meant that I could only barely make out a Wampa in a snowstorm!

I must say I was particularly nervous before playing Star Wars, but it is better than I had hoped, even though perhaps not as good as it should or could be!

For now though, this release will be quite adequate for me to enjoy the original versions of my favourite movies. Until something better comes along in the future at least.

So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...

That quote pretty much sums up Lucas' attitude to this whole thing for me.
Nothing that we probably didn't always suspect anyway, but just a little reminder of what we are buying into here.

I must admit, I do feel a little held to ransom with this release, and although I know I DON'T have to buy this, it appears to be better than anything I currently own. :/

I really do hope that this release will help to generate many more supporters of the original non-bastardized movies, or at the very least raise it's profile and demonstrate to Lucas how important this issue is to the fans.

I just want to watch the ORIGINAL movies made using the best film elements and techniques available to produce the best quality transfer possible!

All the snow is blue in ESB and then when you get to the space slugs teeth they are pink? What the hell. You got the Disney animator going back to the original cells to get the color right and Lucas for all his digital guiros can't even get the color right, and I don't believe this is a creative decision maybe some of it but some of it is just crap, plain and simple! Add that to the fact that they screwed up the soundtrack, and the fact that people here have done much better job fixing things on there own free time and it is a crime. Anyway there is my rant.

Sad, but true! Whoever did the '04 colour work made a right mess!

It looks as if frames were batch adjusted to some sort of automatic generic setting, and not on an individual case by case, or indeed frame by frame basis.

Definitely a rush job, just to get the release out there!

What did the Prequel Trilogy need?
Time
I personally didn't feel that the, "and he was good friend" line, first described by Obi-Wan in Star Wars, was ever really evident in the Prequels at all.
Their relationship seemed based on quips, sarcasm and a "don't do it like that, do it like this" or, "I'm much better with a lightsaber than you", kind of approach.
More like a bad marriage of 'inconvenience' than a genuine friendship.

I guess I was expecting more of the Biggs/Luke type friendship, from the way Alec Guiness portrayed Anakin to us originally in Star Wars.
Old Obi was a conniving old bugger though, so he may not have been telling Luke the "whole truth" of how good a pal he was to his dad.

I do agree with D Cracker, that the comradery that should have been there throughout the PT was severely lacking, and the way the
Obi/Anakin was handled for the PT is just one example.

As long as the original screen captures are scaled to the same size as each other, preferably 720px wide,
and no compression has been applied, this will be enough to gain a good visual comparison between the
two images when looking for relative quality.

The black bars are really irrelevant in this case, as it is the amount of picture information eg. detail,
colour etc stored in each frame that are looking for here.

Sorry that you didn't quite catch my slightly cryptic "corduroy" interjection.

I was really just trying to convey how I perceive the prequels to be very over-dressed in nature, and I'm not just taking in the fx department here!

Plush carpets, cushions and home furnishings, Queen Amidala/Padme costume changes in every scene. Ya know that sort of thing. Seems like every character is dressed-up ready to go to the Ball, ALL THE TIME!!

I much prefer the more 'lived-in' and functional look and feel of the originals. Just
seemed more real to me.

Star wars lost something for me when it became all too clean and polished.
