I can't say that I ever enjoyed the PT, but prior to seeing TPM I was VERY excited about a new SW movie. There was no reason for me to decide ahead of time that I wouldn't like it. SW defined my youth, and the fact that Episode I was actually being made was like a dream come true.

The only thing that my dislike for the PT has to do with my love for the OT is this: I like good movies. The OT were good movies. The PT were not. These opinions were formed AFTER seeing the films, not prior to.

I'll go with this one as the best analogy to the SE screening to honor the model work.

Some of Sebastian Shaw's performance was eliminated. And what remains was tinkered with. Hey, his eyebrow movements were part of his performance.

Clive has nothing left in ESB. And Prowse never participated in ROTS.

On a related note, are there any pics of the chimp and the old woman that were composited (is that a word?) for the Emperor? I mean, before the images were tweaked.

I'll repeat myself. This is not about whether the SE's are great or not, or an improvement or not. The simple fact is that the SE's replaced the work (models) of some artists with the work (CGI) of other artists, without the original artists having any say regarding the alteration of their work.

Personally, I don't really care what Lorne thinks about it because he wasn't the only one who worked on the models for the film.

ADM,

Your post of November 9th got me moving on this. I found the little buggers described on Wikipedia as tonsilloliths.

A couple years ago I discovered my problem and mentioned in to a physician who knew what I was talking about. She gave me a plastic curette to deal with the problem and did mention a surgery for closing up the crypts in extreme cases, but said nothing of tonsil removal.

The curette solution is difficult, imperfect, and mildly painful. During my search after reading your post, I decided to try a waterpik to help the situation. Well, now my teeth are more clean than ever, but it's not easy to use this thing for the tonsillolith problem. All that water to the back of my mouth causes me to gag more easily than the curette does. And I can't look in the mirror when I rinse because the water would end up all over the mirror. So I keep my head down over the sink and guess if I'm hitting the crypts with the spray. Maybe it's improving the situation, but I think I could eventually do better.

If the tonsilloliths were the reason for the removal of your tonsils, was this covered by your health insurance?

The simple fact is that the SE's replaced the work (models) of some artists with the work (CGI) of other artists, without the original artists having any control over the alteration of their work. If one was screening a film to highlight the model work of a particular man, it would make sense to have available the version that features more of this work than the other.

It is an issue such as this that is at the core of the desire to see the OOT preserved in the best possible fashion. Personally, I don't really care what Lorne thinks about it because he wasn't the only one who worked on the models for the film.

Go-Mer, auraloffalwaffle was refuting BeeJay's claim that "the OOT we love is still there and going strong." What does that have to do with the SE? You really DON'T read posts to which you reply, do you?

So, you think it's perfectly acceptable that a cinema would have to resort to using a dvd projector and to show a 13 year old master of a film of which far superior 35mm prints are available?

The LaserDisc quality is not piss-poor quality, like a lot of people try to say. Of course it doesn't rank up with truly restored digital viewing, as it would have if they used the original negatives as the baseline for the September release.

By the same token, the old LaserDisc releases were rather crisp, don't you think?

Aural is talking about the availability of the OOT for projection in a cinema, not debating the quality of the OUT DVDs. So, yes, it would be piss-poor to project the 2006 OUT DVD onto a cinema screen. Gomer, where did you find this guy?

Ingo, if you don't want to do this anymore, then don't. But don't come up with petty demands. There have been over 800 views of this thread, so people are enjoying it. But don't expect a petition.

Like you said, Christmastime would be a good time to do more drawings if you feel up to it. If not, oh well.

ANH screening with modelmaker Lorne Peterson...WHY ARE THEY SCREENING THE SE??
Time
I was just at Barnes & Noble and saw Lorne's book Sculpting a Galaxy: Inside the Star Wars Model Shop. Preface by George Lucas, Foreword by Rick McCallum. The preface was typical GL: "The models were great and Lorne was great, but then I realized that everything I wanted to do couldn't be done with miniatures. So I used computers." (paraphrased) Strange that would even be in there. Maybe it was a pre-requisite for Lorne to get GL's permission to do the book. At least Rick's foreward mentioned that during the prequels there were some things that were better done with models instead of CGI, but he said it was some guy named Brian at the model shop who was really helpful. Apparently Brian works with Lorne, or something like that. Again, not exactly the most appropriate stuff to appear as a foreword in this book.

So my take is that this American Cinematheque screening is more of an opportunity for Lorne to sell his book than to highlight the unfortunate fact that the great work of a lot of folks has been erased by the revision of the film.

Basically the actual fonts with their real names in context of where they work in the realm of fan edits and preservation. I'd start the thing if there proves interest. Thoughts?
Yes, this is a very good idea.

I knew you'd misunderstand that, but I didn't feel like spelling out everything for you the first go 'round. So here you go. The thing that I don't feel strongly about one way or the other was if Adywan shared the clip with everyone or not. Which is why I didn't post anything such as this:
"Heh. I'm sure glad that none of those people that didn't donate can't access the video clip."
nor this:
"Aw, c'mon Adywan. Please share the clip with everyone."

The thing I DO feel strongly about is respecting a decision by someone who is a "giver". And by respecting I mean not publicly questioning or evaluating the merit of said decision. That was the nature of my original response to your post.

To Adywan and others: Sorry about derailing this thread. I've said my piece. If GA26 gets in the last word, so be it.

If you want to get technical I was the only one between who wrote that its completely adywans decision and he has every right to do whatever he wants with the clip.

You also didn’t make a case for not carrying about it being distributed to anyone, but you sure made it appear that you weren’t for the idea.

Interesting take.

Same thing could be said about how you interpreted what I said. And while were on the subject of complaining it could be in question whose really complaining and who’s not at this point. You would know best seeing as how you are a wizard of semantics and know the true nature of all words and know precisely how to label what someone ELSE is saying.

Wow. I guess your right. I should have made a case for something that I had no say in and about which I didn't feel strongly one way or the other. And in fact I was the one who was complaining. Thank you for setting me straight!

I agree 100% with this. It is an english language film, and in its original form it couldn't be properly watched without the subtitles which were therefore within the frame as part of the presentation.

You shouldn't do things with your edit (e.g. avoid burnt-in subs) because someone might use it for something else. Maintain the scenes on your hard drive without subs so that if someone wants to do a foreign language version of this they can get in touch with you.

Perhaps you could just put the scene without subtitles somewhere on the disc as an additional title, for the benefit of future editors.

Again, you shouldn't make concessions on your project (especially ones that eat up bytes) when it shouldn't be too hard for someone to contact you privately.

I’m not complaining or saying you should dish it out to everyone I just think it’s kinda silly.
It is inane for you to tell the guy that his idea for sharing a clip to whomever he chooses is "silly". I find it silly that you can't be patient and had to complain about the situation. And yes, you are complaining.

You don't see us petitioning Adywan to make the clip available to everyone either, do you? It's interesting how you've interpreted our lack of comments on the matter.

The first time I saw this one was in a class I took at USC: "James Bond Film". It was an elective for me (I was a biology major), but an upper level core course for my film major friend. Guest lecturers included Michael G. Wilson and Roger Moore. But I digress...

One thing I liked is that I had no familiarity with George Lazenby*, so I didn't see him as GL playing Bond as I do with the others (yep, there's Sean Connery playing James Bond. And now Roger Moore is playing Bond...). No, it was just, "hey that's James Bond." I'm not sure if that makes sense. So it didn't bother me that his ears were so big, or that he didn't seem as polished as the others. I just went along for the ride. And an action-packed one it is. I'm still not too sure about Telly Savalas as Blofeld, though. Anyhow, I like the film and thought it showed a side of Bond only hinted at a few other times.

I tend to like all of the different actors for what they bring to the part. So if I were recommending Bond films to the uninitiated (which I'm not considering you, Gaf), the short list in viewing order would be this:
From Russia With Love
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
The Spy Who Loved Me
The Living Daylights
(GoldenEye is the only PB Bond I've seen, so I've no opinion on his best.)

*It wasn't until later that I saw him playing John Stamos' father in some strange movie I watched on TV that featured Gene Simmons as a bad guy!

*sigh* My point goes missed, once again. We'll try some analogies.

Paul McCartney is to [blank] as Chris Cornell is to [blank].

(a)Wings
(b)His Solo Career
(c)That little-known group, The Beatles

(x)Audioslave
(y)Temple of the Dog
(z)Soundgarden

Like in the SATs, many answers could be correct. However, in the absence of an "All of the Above" option, one should be the obvious choice above all others.

I follow you. The difference between the two, however, is that Chris Cornell is currently a member of Audioslave. If there were people that needed the additional info ("...of Audioslave"), chances are they don't know who Soundgarden is!

Wings is the only "band" to ever share a credit on a James Bond Song. One other band got a full credit on a Bond song. Anyone know who?

Yes, the sales pitch from day one was "Dec. 31st they will be GONE!" But will retailers really pull the ones that didn't sell off of their shelves? I highly doubt it...

I think the price drop is due to #1 so that they can fulfill their "promise" that they'll be gone by year's end. Otherwise they have to come up with a spin on yet another falsehood.

The sale is on NOW at the brick and mortar as well as the online store. No need to wait for Friday's insanity. I knew these DVDs would eventually come down this far, so I've finally gone ahead and picked them up. Glad I waited. Apologies to those who didn't, unless you got a tin or financed your purchase via auctioning off said tin.

BTW, I don't think there is any way that if the OUT appears in a 2007 30th Anniv. box set, it will be any different from this non-anamorphic "bonus disc" version. So I'm comfortable settling with this as the definitive official DVD release of Star Wars as we know and love it. Might things change with HD-DVD/BluRay? Maybe, but that's such a long way off that I'm not even thinking/worrying about it.
