Info: Cool or Unusual Star Wars Collectibles
Time
Oh, yeah. To this day I consider the Christmas I received the Death Star playset to be the best Xmas ever. I lost that little "rope" early on, but my friend's playset still had it. Also, my trash compactor was entirely dark blue, although my friend's was orange as seen in the link. Indeed the trash compactor and swinging-over-the-non-functioning-bridge were iconic scenes from the movie, and it was great to re-enact those. Although getting Leia to hang on was a bit tricky!

I went through a strange phase after ESB where I thought I was too old for the toys (I was born in '72, so I still don't know why I thought that!) and ended up giving away my entire collection to a young boy whose family was poor. Then ROTJ came out and I had to rebuild my collection. The Ewok Village was one of the playsets I got, and these days my kids play with it along with the other stuff I had. I had to retrofit the wooden "throne" chair since the '90s version of the C-3PO figure wouldn't stay in it. I screwed a little wooden dowel on the seat that he could stradle!

My kids play with the speeder bike as well. When their friends come over and behold the collection, I still get a kick out of showing off the exploding feature of that bike! Actually, the boulder-on-a-rope at the Ewok Village comes in handy for swinging at a speeder bike and "smashing" it apart.

After ROTJ, my friend and I would remove that big gun from the top floor of the Death Star (which my friend still had) and that chair would be the Emperor's throne.

MoveAlong, I just learned what a JACKET_P folder is and does. I've noticed a few, and I've probably deleted them because they didn't seem functional. For that I apologize --- it's not my place to modify someone else's work, even for my own collection.

I'll bite, and flame you for that comment.

You can modify anything you darn well please for your own collection -- just don't omit this fact if you later decide to pass it along!

Uh huh. Got your "Lost Scenes", MA, and the ROM folder is missing. For crying out loud, the DVD menu itself makes mention of this feature. How do you copy and pass this along without realizing you're excising material?

You're right that unless you're getting it from the source you can't know for sure what you're getting. But I've made trades in the past where I've asked ahead of time: "Do your files verify OK with these MD5 checksums?" and if not, I say "no thanks". The MD5's are big in the music trading circles I am in, and are often available online somewhere.

Let's talk DVD burning for a moment. There really are a few issues that will be at play here that apply to both DVD-5 and DVD-9.

Copying a DVD
Those participating in a PiF chain will need to copy discs ACCURATELY. This means including ALL content (e.g. ROM folder) on the copy. It's not uncommon for me to receive in a trade a disc that is missing the extra content. Quite simply, somebody didn't make a proper copy. The easiest way to avoid this is to rip an ISO image of the DVD to your hard drive, and then burn the image to a playable DVD. That way EVERYTHING on the source disc winds up on the copy. I use DVD Decrypter (ImgBurn's forerunner) for ripping the ISO. Note that some of these programs (DVD Decrypter & Nero, that I know of) might actually change IFO and BUP files (during the image ripping process) if the disc was authored a certain way and if certain settings in the software are selected. So you still need to have a clue... unless the DVD was authored in a manner that these programs find acceptable. Not that altered IFO and BUP files are the end of the world, I just think it is important to make copies that are faithful to the original.

As an aside... please don't make copies with DVD Shrink.
A. There is no way to include extra folders.
B. Even if you are using no compression, it'll change more than just the IFO and BUP files.

Burning the DVD from Downloaded Files
<blank>
I have no experience here. If there are any tips that can be shared, please do so.

Dual-Layer Issues (applicable to both items above)
Now, my DL drive is new so I have yet to burn DL with it. But I do know from previously ripping DVD-9's that DVD Decrypter asks something along the lines of "Do you want DVD Decrypter to determine the optimal position of the layer change?". What is the correct answer here? Is the original layer change important enough to keep consistent from copy to copy? Please advise.

As Jonno claims, ImgBurn is the best DL burning tool. I haven't used it for such but I imagine there are some settings that need to be configured for optimal burning, perhaps as it pertains to layer change. Jonno?

It's cliche, but a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If someone screws up a copy early on and then that multiplies, there will be quite a few unhappy people out there. If you're not sure what you're doing, ask. If you still don't know, abstain from participating in the chain. Get it via B&P. Download it. Trade 1:1 for it. Just don't pass along a crap copy.

And finally, to Adywan: will there be MD5 checksums generated for the files on the DVD? Those will allow us to verify whether or not our copies are faithful to your original.

That presumes, doesn't it, that Adywan "intends" for the audience to watch it in numerical order (1-6) rather than production order (4-6, 1-3)?

Hm. You're right. I equated harmonization to "intended viewing order being 1-6". Quite honestly, any rational person would suggest 4-6, then 1-3 if he were recommending the films to someone who had never seen any. Otherwise "No, Luke. I am your father" is rather anti-climactic.

Ady listed those changes on page 177.

What's it like in the future?

It all depends on your setup. I'm up to page 201 on my view!

If they landed directly in front of the rebel base, they would be vulnerable during landing.

Well actually not even ships can get through the shield. Don't forget that they have to lower the shield for the transports to escape so my thought on this is that once the shield is lowered the walkers can slip through .
An interesting idea popped up earlier in the thread about seeing drop ships deploying the AT-AT's. But i feel that adding anything like that in would ruin the reveal of the AT-AT's when we see them through the macrobinoulars and would just be adding something in to the film that really doesn't need to be there. That's the thing i'm trying to avoid and that's the thing that Lucasfilm did with the SE's.

I think it would be possible to see the Star Destroyers dropping large transports of some kind without ruining the reveal of the AT-ATs. Not saying it should be done, just saying it's possible to show something without showing the main attraction.

I would like to know, please.

You do realize that nobody will be printing out the cover for you, right? So you can print out anything you want, without regulations or limitations imposed.

However, the "official" cover will be the one Adywan creates using the painting he is currently creating. Yes, that's right. He has commissioned himself to paint a cover for his edit.

WOW! That was cool. Thanks to forum member Killbot for sending me a copy.

Highlights for me (I'm sure I'm forgetting something):
- The Mos Eisley de-slapstick-ification. Sequences like this show that there *was* potential for the SE to be an enjoyable alternate viewing experience without all the cringing and/or eyeball rolling.
- The cantina creature enhancements. Subtle yet so effective.
- The intensified Ben/Vader duel. Whether or not the music had been added, this is still much more "active" and exciting than the original.
- The Death Star schematics in the rebel briefing. In reading that this was to be redone, I imagined it might stick out like a sore thumb. Not the case at all.
- The Death Star battle, including the destruction as the station was in the process of firing. This definitely increased the "whew!" factor.

Sure, maybe some changes didn't work so well in my opinion. And maybe there were tiny parts excised that I missed seeing. But it was certainly interesting seeing things play out a bit differently. If I want that which is familiar and "comfortable", I'll watch the GOUT. There was plenty to see and enjoy here.

This is Adywan's edit, he did what he wanted to do, and it was fun to watch!

Well done, Adywan! Thanks a million for the time you invested in this project.

Post Script: My daugther noticed the end credits were different as well, what with all the OT.com folks listed. When I pointed out my "name", which she had never heard of, she said, "That's cool. You're sort of in the credits for Star Wars." Heh.

Is it possible for any more of your posts to be asking when this thing will be done? I'd hate to see the percentages. When it's done, what, do you think you'll miss it? And if you don't find out the moment it is completed, that will affect you how?

PIF....

I moderate a forum ("Yahoo Group", technically) dedicated to facilitating the trading of concert bootlegs from a particular band. Our group existed long before torrents and other such download methods were available (heck, we used to trade cassettes). Various distribution methods have been used over the years, and the changes were usually related to Quality Control. The copies in circulation (downstream) were only as good as the methods used upstream, and we were seeing errors whether due to poor technical knowledge, bad burning programs (Easy CD Creator, anyone?), cheap media, or whatever. Now, I realize that audio CDs are more susceptible to errors being introduced via copying than DVDs are. But still, problems can arise. If they arise early in the chain, then the problems are compounded.

It got to the point that we began sending out master discs for people to copy for themselves and then pass on to the next person. Yes, it was slow, but everyone was happy with the results. And with multiple recordings in circulation, there were plenty to go around. For DVDs the master disc sometimes only contains an ISO image file so that one would be less inclined to keep the disc for himself and also to increase the chance of a perfect copy. But I digress....

Personally, I haven't figured out yet how I will obtain a copy of this one. I've got a slow internet connection, so a download is unlikely. I've engaged in some private 1:1 trading with OT.com members, and that has worked well. Or maybe I'll sign up for a PIF chain. Whatever the case, I like the idea of verifying if my copy is faithful to what Adywan originally distributes. The best way to do this is with an MD5 checksum. Some DVDs I've received have the checksum file included in an EXTRAS folder on the DVD itself. For other DVDs, the author has made the MD5 available somewhere online to snag and utilize for verification.

Adywan, will you be creating MD5 checksums for the contents of this DVD? It's quite simple if you've never done so before. I could give you tips if you are interested. Also, I could answer some distribution-related questions if you've got some. Feel free to PM me.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Sluggo,
I kind of like it the way it is.....I really like the white and would definitely try to keep it if you try to change the layout. Good luck

It was produced by a completely different team than SW and Empire and it shows. The narrator is WAY over the top, narration is in past tense, and seems to be aimed a little more to the kiddy audience than the first two albums. We'll have to see if I can work it into an edit worth watching. I'll keep everyone posted...

I LOVE that narrator! Over the top? Absolutely! We used to imagine that he was rapidly chain-smoking as he read his script. It was a sad day when I realized I left my tape of TSOROTJ at a hotel, and there was no retrieving it.

I'm looking forward to this one more than the others.

So when they watch it on their widescreen HDTV, the picture looks stretched and distorted instead of the way it should look. It is so annoying!

I think general ignorance of aspect ratio has remained even though the displays have changed. It used to be that people thought their picture was chopped off on the top and bottom when viewing a widescreen presentation on a 4:3 TV. Nowadays, I can't tell you how often I see people (or businesses) displaying 4:3 images streched out on a 16:9. They have no clue. Hey look! It's widescreen! Yipee!

"Ugh" is right.

The pink menu highlights are not aligned when I watch this (4:3 television). When I switched one of the display settings on my dvd player (from 4:3 letterbox to 4:3 pan & scan IIRC) then the pink highlights are aligned properly, although the menu is streched a bit off-screen. So it has something to do with formatting. No big deal for me.
