Alien Appendix #3: The Alien Archive (Released)

I got an official press kit of Alien lying around here with some photo's, info and badge's. Is that any intresting to scan and upload?

I believe Alien appendix project is intended for video footage only. If there is an interest for CD-Rom compilation of printed promo materials and news articles a new thread should be opened so this one stays on track...

A few years ago UK's Channel 5 had a TV special "Greatest ever scary movies" with a video segment on Alien that topped#the list. Does anyone has that show (or any other in the series for that matter)? http://www2.five.tv/programmes/greatestevermovies/countdown/?list=2

My first thought was why wouldn't you want to includes scans of such material in a ROM folder on the DVD, as well as present them as a "bonus" selection on the DVD's menu.  A press kit is more than just memorabilia from a film, it is an essential piece of the history of the film itself.  Then I thought, "ah, right, this is Aliens Archive that is now being discussed" as AA#3 was released some time back.  But now I realize that tb1971 is referring to the first film with mention of that list.

All this leads me to ask 2 questions:

1. Is the current project in fact AA#4 (collecting material from the sequels), or is more stuff from the original trying to be gathered?

2. If AA#4 is the current project, shouldn't it have it's own thread?

auximenies said:Oh, yeah. To this day I consider the Christmas I received the Death Star playset to be the best Xmas ever. I lost that little "rope" early on, but my friend's playset still had it. Also, my trash compactor was entirely dark blue, although my friend's was orange as seen in the link.

Revisiting this because I came across photographic evidence of that Christmas morning.  Alas, the trash compacter was orange, not blue as my faulty memory had told me.

Just had to get this out there since it was said that the dark blue variety was not known.  Don't want collectible-hunters to continue a wild goose chase!

I think this went over folks' heads.  There's been a lot of turn over on these boards, not to mention many Off-topic posters don't venture into the other forums.  But yes, and advice column would be a great idea.

Yeah, we didn't dwell too much on the episode numbers, and certainly never referred to them as such.  After "Episode IV" appeared in '81 (probably didn't actually see it until home video) we just assumed we missed it or didn't notice it when we saw the original back in '77.  Then after seeing that my friend's Art of Star Wars book attributed the Episode IV designation to a 1976 draft of the script, we were convinced. (Was this George's first step in creating a revised history??)

Back in the day I always thought it was neat that these movies were set in the middle of a larger time frame, without expecting that any more movies would ever be made.

Mine is there, too.  18th down, beginning "Well, I have always said I was the ideal age when Star Wars was released -- 5 years old..."

One thing I will add is in regards to my interpretation of TESB having the "Episode V" designation.  At the same lunch room table where my pals and I debated the Luke/Vader relationship, we came to the conclusion that Star Wars was episode I, and slots II-IV were to be filled in by books, with Splinter of the Mind's Eye being episode II.

Star Wars DVD Covers

Hey, what kind of paper do you guys print your DVD covers on? I printed mine on just standard paper, but it looks shitty because the colors bleed a little and the paper gets wrinkly from the heavy ink coating. What kind of paper do you recommend printing a DVD cover on for close-as-retail-covers possible?

For CDs I always used HP Glossy Brochure paper.  It's not too thick, and it's the same on both sides.  Just a really nice paper.  Then I'd trim with my trusty Xacto knife and a straight edge, and perforate the spine folds.  Unfortunately, their legal-size of this paper is not so readily available.  It would be perfect for DVD covers.

Mouse creature?  That's Snaggletooth, of original Action Figure fame!  Actually, as a kid I always figured his scenes wound up on the cutting room floor (you also see him when Luke and the droids enter the joint) since we never saw him in the movie.  Turns out he was a victim of the pan-and-scan VHS release which was the only way I watched SW after '77 until I got the letterbox Faces set.

Talking to a pal of mine who's a drum-circle playing hippie type amature music producer brought me to this idea.

Do you suppose the happy "Endor Battle" song, or "Yub Nub" might be more palatable if they were brought down a notch in pitch, and accompanied by a slightly more serious, tribal style drum track? Not like a techo-remix or anything, but just an occasional drum flourish.

My pal is slightly unreliable, but he was going to attempt it with the Endor Battle music. If he does it, I'll post it.

If you're looking for some tribal percussion, check out The Apocalypse Now Sessions by the Rhythm Devils.  Good stuff.

Given the short time of the original, I always get a kick out of Luke's response to the Rebel asking him if he wants a new Astromech. "Not on your life. This little droid and I have been through a lot together" or whatever he says.

At which point my daughter and I turn to each other and say, "Yeah.  For all of two days!"

In fact, during those few days, what exactly did they go through together?  After buying Artoo, Luke cleans him up resulting in Artoo accidentally projecting a holo-message.  Then he runs away and gets Luke jumped by Tuskins.  Then they hang out at Ben's place, and wind up in Mos Eisley (where the droids don't accompany Luke and Ben inside the cantina).  On the Falcon, Artoo seems to hang out more with Chewie than Luke.  Then at the Death Star again Luke goes off without Artoo.

I guess Artoo has charisma.

Wrong.  I'm not a filmmaker, nor a formal student of film, but I can tell you that I watch films differently than the general population (as evidenced by what I consider "good" as compared to what is popular).  Certain films move me emotionally in the same way that a great piece of music does (and I'm not a musician, either!), and have moments that I have great appreciation for.  For me this goes beyond mere "entertainment".

According to the Star Wars Episode 2 Visual Dictionary those rockets of Artoo's only had a lifetime of about twenty years so they would no longer be functional.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!  Yeah, 'cause there was NO way that new ones could have been installed at a later time.  Strange that my Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary (circa 1998) made no mention of Artoo's non-functional rockets, even though this book bills itself as "From the Lucasfilms Archives; New Definitive Guide". :^?

I'm SOOO glad I stopped buying this crap that is constantly changing.

How many times do you watch Star Wars (OT,OOT, GOUT) - over a period of time?
Time

Maybe once a month?  Or the entire trilogy once every 2 months?

I watch with my 2 daughters.  Once we watch one of them, they usually beg for the other 2 to be viewed in the next week or so.  We watch the GOUT.  Before that it was the Dr. Gonzo transfer, and before that it was my own edit from a FS VHS set.  Since my eldest at the time was a bit young, i edited out things like smoldering aunt & uncle, some of the wampa, Han being tortured.... things like that.  She also didn't like the emperor, so i edited out nearly every close-up of him.  Surprisingly, his dialog was well-divided between distant shots and close-ups, so the story could still be followed!  Anyhow, I put all three on a single VHS in SLP mode (!), and even put the Boba Fett HS Nelvana cartoon on there between SW and ESB.

We've also watched Adywan's Revisited, Revisited Purist, and EditDroid Isolated Score in lieu of the GOUT.

Good stuff, Gaf.  Gave me a chuckle.

As for this:

Gaffer Tape said:

C-3PO and R2-D2 present themselves to Jabba.  R2 has a message for Jabba from Luke.  He presumably (and according to Shadows of the Empire definitely) knows that Luke is going to offer them to Jabba in exchange.  R2 is also secretly carrying Luke's lightsaber.  R2 knows everything.  3PO obviously knows absolutely nothing about this plan.  But what if Jabba had been like, "Yeah, sure, that works for me.  You guys stay here, and I'll hand over Han."  Would Luke have made good on his deal and just abandoned the droids?

If i'm not mistaken, Luke is seeking an audience with Jabba at this point and the droids are a token of "goodwill".  So he is not trying to exchange them for Han.  Still, the "plan" doesn't look too sound.......

Adywan I'm sorry you missed my point about your fan edit and its connection to GL's own mania. It wasn't intended as an insult to you or your work.

Are you sure?:

Crygor64 said:

Your "Star Wars Revisited" is merely "Star Wars: The Extra Special Edition."  So by OT.com standards your opinion on this matter is invalid.  You are as bad as Lucas if not worse.  You know what would make Star Wars even better?  More Tie Fighters! (lol)

............

Adywan you are the perfect example of a hypocrite. You don't get it do you? You complain about George's actions and yet your own fan film is nothing more than SW: The Extra Special Edition.  I have a suggestion for your ESB Edit.  More Wampas! How about 10 Wampas all attacking at once?  Maybe you could add another couple of dozen AT-ATs?  I'm sure GL is very proud of your work. Its done very much in the spirit of his own Special Edition.

.............

And I'm only busting Adywan's balls because anyone who creates their own "extra special edition" probably shouldn't be complaining about GL's own mania.  Glass houses and all... However I have always respected Adywan's abilities. Editing and CGI effects are not easy. His fan edit is amazing simply because of what he's accomplished.  I hope he understands how I feel.

Yes, it is clear that you respect his abilities.  I'm sure he understands how you feel.  You didn't seem to hold anything back.

it might actually be wat we've been waiting for! why make each episode of the OT two discs?

Uh, for the same reason they did so for the 2006 individual releases: to include both SE and Original Theatrical (2 discs) in a single package.

Folks, if you are even remotely hopeful that these will include the OOT in an improved state, you are lightyears more optimistic than i could ever be!

I have seen no reason to believe these aren't the 2006 discs in a new package.

We need less childish drama over this kids movie.  Didn't like it?  Too bad. Stop acting like Lucas has slighted you personally.  Some of you just need to let it go.

This isn't like Greedo shooting first.  This isn't the Prequel Trilogy.  Its a kids movie.  Its fun and incredibly stupid.  Some of you have forgotten how to experience joy.  Others are just too old for this shit.  Most people who saw the original SW in the theaters are at or over 40 years old.  That's your problem right there.  Well that and a complete lack of youthful imagination.

AC3 to CD
Time

You'll need to resample it from 48kHz to 44.1kHz.

When I've done this in the past I've demuxed the audio by ripping with DVD Decrypter.  Then I convert the AC3 to WAV using BeSweet.  Then resample the WAV.  Can't remember if BeSweet does this or if I used SoundForge....

Anyway, for splitting tracks on sector boundaries (to avoid clicking), nothing is easier than CDWave.

Good luck.

Nope.  The EditDroid docs come from Japanese laser discs, and AFAIK have burned in subs.  I think the ones on the Rowman discs are sourced from VHS.  I know there is a bit of confusion because Rowman designed his menus to complement the EditDroid OT release, but that was before the official EditDroid bonus discs became known.

I haven't sent one to Ben_Danger yet. If you're willing to do that, that'd be awesome. I'm pretty sure he's the only one who liked it so far. LOL!

The reviews have been brutal, which you run the risk of whenever you cut a beloved film so deeply.

Beloved?! <insert swirly-eyed guy here> Never heard that before. But I guess some people really like the original. I never knew that...

InfoDroid said:

But, what can ya do? Here's to hoping people like my less-drastic cut of "Last Crusade" better, because right now, I've got the fanedit equivalent of "Ishtar" on my hands. LOL!

Nah. I think you're overreacting. There were only three people who gave you thumbs down. When you consider they all said they liked the original, don't sweat it. Considering you've made it clear that this edit is for those that didn't care for a lot of the elements of the original, I'd ignore the critiques from those who are fans of the original (aside from any technical critiques -- you always gotta listen to those).
