Starwars.com closes its forums

I've never spent much time there. Lurked a bit. Seemed like an unhappy place, to be honest. I can't say why, just gave me this feeling of "circling the drain" for some reason. I've actually read complaints along those lines, that some people had been on that forum for 10 years, and their kids had practically grown up in the time since they joined. Maybe the admins felt the board had run its course and was becoming redundant. But then, you'd think they'd see an explosion of new discussion with the release of the blu-rays, which brings it back to adywan's point about fear that the new releases will spark overwhelmingly negative discussion.

Soon the limited edition Stanley Kubrick Collection blu-ray set will be mine!

I've been waiting for Barry Lyndon on blu-ray for years, and then they go and throw it in this collection. Would be great, except there are some really lackluster transfers in this set. They're just re-releases of the individual BR discs and I already have most of them. I really hope they release Lyndon on its own.

I would agree. Ace In The Hole is his best film. Great performances, script, pacing, cinematography. It's all top notch. I just can't imagine anyone not liking it.

That being said, I think Sunset Blvd is a more artistic and daring film in just about every regard. It's not to everyone's taste, but neither is the best art. Sunset reminds me at times of gothic horror in the vein of Dracula, and I just love that about it, given its subject matter. Its characters are larger than life, it's conceit outlandish, and it's also one of the most stunning black and white films I've ever seen. It just could not be done in color.

In a way, if Ace is Spielberg, Sunset is Kubrick.

The thing I most hate about him is his stubbornness in refusing to release the OOT (no the GOUT really doesn't count) on modern video format.

zombie's post actually settles the question in my mind as to why GL didn't release the OOT and never will. It's not just that modern digital effects allowed him to realize visuals he couldn't achieve in the 70s and 80s. I suspect Lucas felt that the OOT is not 100% his and he privately hated that. The special editions were a way of satisfying his own need to have the final say – which, as creator he's entitled to have, for better or worse.

I found Paul to be a bit flat. It did have some good bits but it wasn't funny enough to be a comedy and it wasn't interesting enough to be an alien movie.

maybe that's just me.

It's probably not just you, I'm sure there are others who would agree. But I can say my friends and I, and the audience we saw it with, were lolling on the reg. I think the sheer number of geek-cred nods alone earned it half a star (the Cantina Band song played by a country western bar band was particularly funny to me). In all, I'd give it a 7.5/10.

This morning I watched Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution. Not my favorite Wilder flick, but great performances by Charles Laughton and Tyrone Power (I'm not a Marlene Dietrich fan, and she didn't do anything unique in this film to change that). Agatha Christie movies can be hard for me to enjoy, because I'm always expecting the unexpected and trying to figure out how she's going to trick us at the end. Sometimes her plots are too convoluted to be believed, but this one really worked for me.

EDIT: Damn, Ruta Lee was fiiine in 1957.

I enjoyed your creative use of foul language especially. Something about dicks that you said made me laugh for like ten minutes.

Well, to be fair, if it is genuine and not a prank, adywan wasn't banned for posting an off-topic link. He was temp-banned for losing his cool in a glorious fashion after a warning, and then perma-banned for creating a sock account and continuing the flame war. Those are justifiable grounds for banning. Others have been banned for similar activity, and adywan has to be held to the same standard as everyone else.

That's if it's genuine.

What are your (Least) favorite Pranks?

I love that video. The guy doing the motions is so serious, it's great.

I'd just read about Netflix launching their first original series, so when I read "Netflix to Relaunch Firefly" I bought it for about 10 seconds. Then cried and punched my sister in the mouth.
