The VHS>DVD Business
Time
Hi everyone,

I've been toying with the idea here lately of starting a business where I backup people's old VHS tapes (home movies, wedding tapes, etc. - i.e. nothing copyrighted) to DVD.

I was wondering what sort of equipment I would need to start such a business. I think I am getting the software end of things down-pat, but I don't have a video capture card (or whatever it is that I need).

I assume you just plug in AV cables from the VCR to the capture card, hit record on a capture program, hit play on the VCR, and then edit to the customer's liking.

What would be a good piece of hardware to use? Software?

What would be a fair cost to charge for such a service?

Is VHS the most typical format folks want backed up, or is there a big demand for backups of 8mm, slideshows, etc.?

Thanks - feel free to pm or email me with information if you don't want to reply here.

What if I were to make some menus w/ a scene selection and a couple of trailers and do it as a kit, just like I did Backstroke? Meaning, you have to buy the DVD to get the movie files to add in to it. What do you guys think of that? If we can find any other extras and stuff like that, that would be great too. I think a couple of downloadable trailers are at retrojunk.com.

Sounds fun!

Idea: My own version of the OT
Time
Hey lord3vil,

First off, as a new member, you might want to turn on your pm's - not that I have one to send to you, but it will help in the future, I'm sure.

Overall, I think ADigitalMan's Special Editions have what you are looking for.

Most 2004-based edits have the ANH edits you want. Darth Editous is doing an Episode V edit that meets most of your criteria, also. Not sure who else might have ROTJ's new ending music in, but there might be some.

You and I agree on a lot of the changes we'd make.

Does Anyone Want To Do A Potentially Challenging - But Neat - Star Wars Title Crawl For Me?
Time
I am still looking for anyone interested in possibly helping with this project.

Basically, what I would like to do is to see title crawls for ESB and ROTJ created so that they begin not with the STAR WARS logo, but rather the logo for each film - the rounded, diagonal box for ESB and the rectangle for ROTJ. Of course, this would probably require having the movies logos in some sort of vector-based graphic, which may or may not exist. After that, I would like to see the episode numbering for ESB and ROTJ removed. Essentially, what I want to see is a kind of backwards retrofitting of the crawls to "match" the original 1977 Star Wars title crawl. The back-story text is fine, in my opinion. It would be interesting to see the ESB crawl done in blue and the ROTJ done in red, but that is unnecessary (unless it is a simple color switch on a finished gold crawl).

If anyone is interested in helping me with this, or doing it for me, I would really appreciate it. I have zero experience doing title crawls. Please pm or email me if you are interested.

Info: Archive.org Feature Films (in the public domain)
Time

I know that everyone here loves high quality transfers of everything possible, but I also think a lot of people might be interested in this website if they don’t know about it already:

Archive.org Feature Films

The archive has tons and tons of old movies (that are now public domain) in mpeg/avi (and some in DVD ISO) format. The quality won’t be DVD quality for most, but it is still worth it for things that you would like to get for free that you don’t necessarily want to pay for, such as:

  • Nosferatu
  • The Golem
  • Salt Of The Earth
  • La Voyage Dans La Lune
  • Un Chien Andalou
  • Reefer Madness
  • Night Of The Living Dead
  • The Brain That Wouldn’t Die

So, I just thought I would mention it to folks.

Also, does anyone know a good one or two-step program (like Avi2DVD) for making DVD-Video format DVD’s out of raw mpegs?

Also, does anyone know the legal restrictions on selling these movies?

.: The MQG Clip Thread :. (video clips from Star Wars movies with changed music)

Now, after sleeping and watching it again, I feel dissatisfied with the music of the edited scene, I really have problems with finding music for it. I have done a new version with other music, it only shows a part of the arrival, but I will also change the music of the other parts that were shown in the clip before. And this one is only a very rough version regarding the cut of the music:

THE OLD REPUBLIC: Arrival at Coruscant v.2

I didn't watch the first one, but I did watch the second one - I thought it was great, and a great choice of music too. Matched up very well.

I know this is slightly off topic, but I noticed when playing Lego Star Wars that by the end of the games, they were heavily using music from the OT. Even though they were prequel games, the designers used music from the OT because it was more dramatic and intense. And you know what? It made the prequels seem more epic (even though it was just Lego Star Wars) and that is why I have good feelings about this project.

On a side note - Anakin's turn to the dark side was more convincing in Lego Star Wars than in the movies. And it was only mentioned in one level's title crawl. How sad is that?
