You really insist on misinterpreting my every word? Okay, let me show you instead.

And yes, while the original is more heavily filtered this is to (successfully imho) create a very gloomy look where colour is nearly absent in favor of dark silhouettes against the sky. Your version is far more well lit and should have some more colour in it. Or, less, actually as both cloud city and the falcon are entirely grey.
No i do not insist on misinterpreting every word you say at all. All i have done is answer back to exactly what you wrote. There is no misinterpreatation at all as it's as clear as day what you wrote.
And that picture you just posted with the comparisons you have actually proved yourself to be totally wrong. You are comparing completely the wrong sections of the city and , as you have shown, my new matte has exactly the same type of gradient so i really can't see the problem
And you have obviously checked the colouring on the 2004 set for this shot as it was never as dark as it is now, which is why i said to check the original, not the SE.

There's a difference between shading and light source. You can still shade it the same way and have a different source for the light.
Are you serious? Shading is directly affected by position and intensity of light and shape. You couldn't shade it the same way as the image you posted and have the light source in a direction that would illuminate the whole front of the city. You also have to take into account ambient light. The shot you posted the city is higher above the clouds than in the video. All these things have to be taken into account when calculating how the shading of an object should be.

Vaderios' renders do a good job of showing that "deep gradings" don't occur unless the object in question is close to being paper thin. The transition phase from light to dark has a roughly fixed depth based on the shape and type of material.
To say that because the video shot matte doesn't have the deep shading as the picture so it must be paper thin is just plain wrong. Vaderios has even proved this with his renders posted and these are 3D models not "paper thin" as you like to put it.

First, it seems to suffer from orange-itis, which is to say many films these days - particularly Star Wars Episodes II and III are guilty - suffer from an apparent inability to contain other colours than a deep, brilliant orange. It's almost monochromatic, and somewhat out of tune with the generally more natural coloration of the OT. The clouds are largely fine, but the falcon and the city itself should probably show more of their natural colour rather than being almost chameleon like in their pigmentation.ast.
Maybe you should go back and re-watch the original because that certainly doesn't have natural colouring because of the heavy all over colour filtering done to it.

And I know it's unfinished. However I also know that "unfinished" may also mean "close to final look" and figured any criticism would still be relevant to the parts you hadn't changed.
If it was close to the final look then i wouldn't have wrote this then would i...
It still has a lot of work left to be done to it.....
BmB, maybe bothering to read the description in the video you linked to would have given you a bit of a clue to the finished state of that shot
An unfinished clip from ESB:Revisited showing the new approach to Cloud City. It still has a lot of work left to be done to it but it gives you a good idea of how the new shot will be like
This video was uploaded ages ago and since then other shots have been posted showing the progress of the colouring.
As for the cloud city matte, the picture you say the shading should be like has the suns position completely different than the one in this shot. That picture has the sun almost directly to the side of the city, which would illuminate only that section and cause that deep grading. As you can see in the video, the sun is almost directly facing the city, so that kind of gradient would not happen

On a second note the trailer for the SW BD emphasized the PT more than the OT.
Which trailer? I didn't realise a trailer was out yet
There was a trailer for the SW BD saga released in like April-May. Look it up on youtube.
There have only been fan made trailers on youtube. There hasn't been an official trailer released yet and that probably won't happen until next year

Adywan,
Will you be doing anything with the AT-AT stop-motion to make it look not-so "stop motion"?
no. The stop motion of the AT-AT's has always worked perfectly for me. It gives them a more mechanical feel. The versions we see in the PT just look so fake and too fluid
That's some really bad news about the purist. I really can't understand why they won't include it. If this is the way they view the purist then there is no way they would include ESB:R then. But it will be interesting to see what they do when its released.
Also, about that shot, its strange that the GOUT has the "dots" the same as the SE.

Now that's funny! I know its not on topic here, but its my thread so I'll ask: What is the plan for these shots in ESBR?adywan said:
One thing i noticed while doing ESB:R is that the new composite is actually worse than the old one in the bottom shot. The viewscreen surrounding is now transparent and you can see Piette's body through it
I have to admit i'm not a fan of the "dots". It just doesn't look right, but there is no way to get rid of these without having to use a source with a lot less quality, which wouldn't look good in 720p. I want to do something that makes it look more like a video screen and the dots just don't do it.

Star Wars stopped being fun for me around 1999 with the release of TPM. It wasn't the film itself, although i did walk out of the cinema feeling very let down, but it was the star of the huge split within the Star Wars fan community. It became PT vs OT fans. Not even the SE started something as big as this. The next nail in the coffin was when the Special Editions stopped being what they were originally titled and became the only version. It just wasn't fun chatting to people i knew about Star Wars any more because there was that huge divide. Now i don't hate the SE's or the PT but i hate what they did to the fandom.

Looks like Warner Bros have blocked that video already on copyright grounds

Leave the guys on the far right, it looks far better than the original that way.
It's quite impressive, really.
If the conversation is the main focus of the shot, and the ships are the main focus of the conversation, doesn't that mean they sort of balance each other out? I'd keep it the way it looks now, but without the pink tones.
It looks AWESOME! ;)
if they were just standing there it would be possible to shrink and place them on the right but they walk off the screen so i have to keep them the same size. Plus it would be a nightmare having to replace all the insignias and track them to look perfect. I'm just going to go with a new larger background to show just how big this hangar is with a lot more activity
I don't know if this has already been posted somewhere but what does everyone think about this, if it is indeed true?

God , i'm loving reading through the making of empire book. Something interesting i found which will put the debate about the passage of time in the bespin scenes finally to rest:
"Typical of George was his clever concept of showing the passage of time in Cloud City," says Ellenshaw, "by going from sunrise to daylight to sunset for the falcons departure."
So there we have it . Why the hell they recoloured everything in 2004 to make it look more like sunset when the falcon arrives just shows to me that the recolouring was never a deliberate creative decision because that screws up the original intent of the scene.
Here's a pic of that scene from the making of ESB book along with the description:

A painted photo comp by McQuarrie shows the first attempt at a rebel hangar scene as planned and shot in England - but when Lucas found the shot unsatisfactory he decided to redo it.
Well I'm back on his ignore list, even though he said he had no beef with me. This guy has some serious issues. I guess he likes to think he is Mr all knowledgeable and doesn't like it when anyone dares to challenge this

I have the sounds of star wars book as well. And the new obi wan howl is not as bad as everyone says it is it's far better than 2004 that is for sure.
Did you have the sound muted when you listened to it? Because that's the only way that new howl would sound any good at all
What i'm preying is that this is actually the 2004 howl before being run through the synthesiser, but it's strange its called New Obi Howl and the one prior to it was the raw screams done by Wood & Acord so surely it should have been the final product? But then again they have made a bit of a mistake in the book. There is one sound which is supposed to be the X-wings launching from Yavin, but its the Millennium Falcon
Asteroid-Man said:
As much as I dislike this new howl, you guys didn't actually like the original howl did you?
yeh, i loved the original sound. It really didn't need changing.
zombie84 said:
LOL is this for real?
"WooooOOOOoooo [bad echo effect] wooaAHHHHH"
unfortunately it's 100% real. here's what it says about the new sound:
An interim crow sounds was first tried before Burtt arrived and recorded Wood and Acord in the parking lot behind the tech building. " He sourced it from Dave and me yelling", Wood says. "We screamed and screamed. I was trying to model mine off this terrible cheesy element that i love from a Disneyland ride, The Haunted Mansion. : ah, ah, ahooooaah!"
Ultimately, Burtt blended the screams- with Acord starting the scream and Wood ending the scream. "It sounds like some kind of weird animal but coming from a human, "says Wood
Well i just got a copy of The Sounds Of Star Wars book and it's very interesting. But my sheer delight turned to horror when i turned to page 276 and the chapter called "The Last Sound". Well it goes on about how they changed the howl in 2004 because GL didn't like the original sound. So there are 2 audio clips in this chapter: Obi-Wan Howl, which is the original version, RAW Yells, which is just some experimentation with no effects then the final one New Obi Howl. Now i pressed the play button and expected to hear the whistle sound that was heard in the 2004 DVD version, but now, it was far worse. It's a whole new sound and it is horrendous. It sounds like someone has done this on a home computer with a few stock effects. It doesn't even sound like it could possibly be Obi-Wan. So i guess this is what is going to eb in the new mix. If this is what we've got to look forward too then i really do fear that the mix will outdo the 2004 version as being the worse ever Star Wars IV mix.
Here is the sound if you want to hear it:
http://hotfile.com/dl/77458223/09f6e53/obi-wans_new_roar.mp3.html
And no, this isn't fake. Anyone who has the "sounds" book will verify this.

No its not! Its about someone who is trying to come out of closet to confess, that he’s really homosexual.
Please grow up and get used to the fact you’re on the ignore list!
It’s not a laughing matter no more! It’s childish!
Pot kettle and black. You tell someone to grow up and yet you resort to the most childish thing by calling someone gay. Very mature that. And you're supposed to be 43? Geez. It's idiots like you that make me ashamed to be British. Man, we stopped calling people out like that when we left the playground And how is this any more childish that throwing your dummy out of the pram going around the internet posting the same old crap about how you won't buy the star wars blu-rays because they'll have DTS audio even though you know nothing about this? You are coming across far more immature than Frink is. At least Frink is being humorous when you are coming across as a little psychotic. I mean, come on, you put the same crap almost word for word on comments on star wars videos on you tube, star wars pages on facebook and then you invade here.

Now grown up or piss off to another site!
And you've been a member how long? What gives you the right to tell someone to piss off to another site just because you don't like them, especially when they have been here a lot longer than you have?. This isn't your site you know. The thread wasn't started to be about you. It was about who was being ignored by you because you put almost everyone on your ignore list which is something that was unheard of, especially putting people on the list you had had no interaction with. And don't come back with that "must have been a software glitch" bullshit that you spouted earlier because we're not as dumb as you try to make out.
Take a step back, look in the mirror and realise that you have some serious issues and then maybe you won't be the biggest joke on these forums
EDIT: I just noticed that you took me off your ignore list. I guess i'm back on it. Or are you going to be man enough to take some criticism? And i know what i wrote has come across as harsh but it really pisses me off when a newbie comes in here and starts telling older members to piss off out and think they own the boards. If you could hold a civil conversation like your reply ion the blu ray thread then i would be more than happy to have a proper conversation with you and be civil towards you. Sometimes you just do need to take a step back and see how you are coming across, because it isn't good at times.
