General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

started collecting the various releases of the films on VHS and DVD this year

1992 fox fullscreen vhs box set
1995 thx ‘faces’ fullscreen + widescreen vhs box sets
1997 special edition fullscreen + widescreen vhs box sets
1999 phantom menace widescreen vhs
2000 special edition vhs in fullscreen + widescreen box sets (mostly because the art was cooler)
2005 fullscreen prequel trilogy dvds
2004 4-disc original trilogy widescreen + fullscreen dvds
2006 gout ‘bonus disc’ dvds
2013 6-disc original trilogy blu-ray/dvd combo

not many laserdiscs. only have a cbs/fox copy pan n scan copy of ESB right now.

hopeful there’ll be cleaned + color-graded preservations of the original trilogy on 35mm in 4k completed this year or next. in the market for a 4k tv that’s also 3d compatible.

"Making Of Star Wars" documentary VHS question
Time

"The Making of Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition"
This VHS tape, “The Making of Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition” is included with the special edition collectors box set — Does it contain this ~30 min doc about the special edition changes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzApL8nUyT0) Is the video content also available in 3 separate parts on the laserdisc releases of the special editions?

Or is it just the original “Making of Star Wars” documentary? that’s available in the Complete Saga 9-disc blu-ray set (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSuDjjlIPak)

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

Hux and Snoke allude to “having the resistance tied to a string.” Were the First Order locked-on to Finn-2-187 and tracking him through hyperspace? Since Finn had been abducted as a child and in their ranks as a stormtrooper for some time before The Force Awakens, did the First Order embed trackers into their soldiers and more easily seek out defectors?

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

wouldn’t be mad at disney updating the films unlike the special edition, by rescanning all the original elements and digitally compositing them again now with better tech and higher resolutions, while still ultimately restoring the film to the original theatrical cut, no ‘contemporary’ regrade.

and it’d be cool if all the lightsabers looked as good as they do in TLJ.

though they should probably just compensate mike for his work on Legacy when that’s totally finished and release that first.

Okay here’s something I am not sure has been asked before, but in TLJ does young Ben Solo use Anakin’s saber to block Luke? Is this ever mentioned elsewhere?

nah. for a moment i thought it’d make sense for it to be the same saber because of Rey’s experience touching Anakin’s lightsaber in Maz’s castle in TFA but taking a second look…

https://imgur.com/a/mc3Ul

looks like kylo’s saber but not black/red with the guards.

I’m pretty sure he uses Anakin’s saber. That’s why he says “it belongs to me” in TFA.

kylo may have felt entitled to it because of his family, but he did not use it to defend himself against luke in that tent.

Don’t Join

Yes, but I still don’t get it. He doesn’t like the Resistance or the First Order… so his nickname is “Don’t Join”?

No, don’t join is his motto, DJ is his nickname.

find it coincidental that the acronym for Master Codebreaker is MC, while acronym for Dont Join is DJ. Rian Johnson’s a big hip hop fan?

once I’ve got the videos decimated to the same 23.976 frame rate.

Are you talking about 29.97fps source, right?

yea the NTSC version of the episode, as well as the 25fps pal version.

On an unrelated project but similar note, I’m wondering if this is overlay method is possible to colorize the b&w section in Kill Bill Vol 1. using the 480p Japanese DVD.

I like it but I still prefer McDiarmid as the Emperor in ESB. It would be awesome to see a “canon-friendly” edition with the good changes and fit more in line with the new canon without all the unnecessary scenes and continuity errors created by the Special Editions and Prequels. (Mostly the Prequels.)

palp’s ROTS makeup looked pretty crappy.

Despite it getting an Oscar nomination.

I for one agree with the academy: no trophy.

i wish they’d reshot that dialogue during ROTJ’s principal photography, or even during phantom menace’s filming. palp’s ROTS makeup looked pretty crappy.

I usually do this:

 • convert PAL 25fps to 23.976fps (or 24fps, in those rare cases), tempo and/or pitch (whichever is needed)
 • synch PAL video to 23.976fps (24fps) source; audio would follow, of course

Sounds good! Fingers crossed I can sync the audio in sections with pluraleyes once I’ve got the videos decimated to the same 23.976 frame rate.
