Star Wars GOUT in HD using super resolution algorithm (* unfinished project *)
Time

Which Laserdisc set is better? The 1993 set, or the 1995 THX ones? I heard the 95 ones are merely the 93 discs in different packaging. But I also heard they did some minor improvements as with the 95 'Faces' VHS set. Cant verify which is true.

I would assume a new digital rip from one of those sets would give more flexibility.

@ilovewaterslides

Oh wow, you are right, It is being shot in mostly 35mm, with some 65mm IMAX segments. That's ultra cool. Gives me some hope for the film then. I haven't watched the trailers, so I simply assumed it was digital. Sorry about that.

So then I assume its YouTubes crappy handling of HD videos.

I don't suppose you would consider using your methods on the two trailers for the Force Awakens? I've downloaded them from youtube but would love copies of them in better quality. You can download them in 1080p but they look quite soft.

 YouTube HD is terrible. Highly compressed to save space and bandwidth. Only 1440P and higher is of acceptable quality.

You can see if the Star Wars website has a different copy, but I assume all will be 1080P. Plus, the film itself may have a very soft focus on it, or the trailer was supposed to be presented that way. With digital films, the quality is never that good.

I tend to agree on the color correction as well. Environment color looks nicer, but skin tones get the lobster effect going, and blacks seem to get crushed.

Plus, I think most people tend to agree that the GOUT has the best color palette in regards to the original elements. It manages to retain that very distinct 70s feel.

@DrDre

Looks like we all better hurry up and wait. :P

Thanks again for all your hard work, to you and LaserDisc Master. This upscale will definitely be the definitive version of the GOUT. Lets hope Disney puts the same time and dedication to an official release.

But for now, your upscale will be a tremendous piece of Star Wars preservation history!

@Intruder

Yep, your right. SR brings out more detail, but will also "enhance" the noise and bad aliasing. MU handles the noise surprisingly well, but looses enough detail to notice.

Its down to peoples personal preferences now. But its awesome to have both to people will have a choice. But there are defects inherent to the GOUT that will never be fixed.

All you guys have done incredible work! You have given life to the GOUT I never thought possible.

Kind of off topic, so I apologize in advance. But which do you think has color that is closer to the original elements? The Blu Ray or the GOUT?

With the Blu Ray, they seem to over-saturate the colors so they "pop" more. Whereas the GOUT seemed to capture the natural color palette better, even though the transfer was very substandard.

Digital video to me seems over saturated and makes it hyper real, whereas film has a soft, and very natural color. Plus, I love film grain. :)

I suspect not much can be done with the AA. That is inherent to the DVD, and probably no amount of work can circumvent it.

The transfer to the LaserDisc is where almost all the problems lie. Many of them could have been addressed when the transfer to DVD was made.

This will be by far, the best the GOUT will ever look. Only so much you can do with this material. The results are quite amazing, I am stunned this much detail is actually there.
