Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *
Time

https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2017/05/the-last-jedi-heavy-walkers-resistance-bombers-and-snoke-revealed-in-new-lego-sets.html

So it seems likely that Snoke will make a non-hologram appearance in TLJ.

It also seems like Laura Dern’s character simply has pink hair in general.
(Based on the Vanity Fair photo, I assumed that it might simply be part of a Canto Bight disguise or something similar.)

Here’s a photo of the book speeder with the wheels photoshopped out, for a better idea of what it’ll look like on screen.

So it’s essentially a pretty normal-looking speeder with some pieces missing. That actually seems quite fitting for Han. I’m sure he’s done some “special modifications” to it, hence why the machinery is exposed.

Second article from Vanity Fair!

Cover Story: Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Definitive Preview

I love the look of these aliens.

(Also is that a Bothan? He looks a lot like the second version of the Bothans from Legends, only much taller and hairless.)

“[Rose’s] plotline involves a mission behind enemy lines with Boyega’s Finn.” “Rose and Finn’s adventure takes them to, among other places, another Johnson innovation: a glittering casino city called Canto Bight, ‘a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment’”

“A prominent officer in the Resistance named Vice Admiral [Amilyn] Holdo, played by Laura Dern.”

She looks more like some kind of socialite in the picture below, so it seems like she’ll join them on this undercover mission.
(It’s a tad weird though, I wouldn’t think that the First Order would have rich people parties like this. Or maybe they’re only indirectly tied to them. All the aliens seem kind of out of place in a First Order setting. Or is that no longer relevant at this point in the canon? I haven’t really read any newEU content from this era.)

At what age did you realize that Star Wars isn't a documentary?

Side note, though I’ve mentioned it before, it’s funny to me how I must be in the minority that really found TPM super boring despite seeing it at age 4.

I just found it to be confusing. And I was six when I first saw it.

A lot people tend to retroactively forget that the prequels never actually explain anything lore-wise. It just kind of expects you to already know, which is weird when your target audience is kids. Especially since I, like many people here, and most people born after ca. 1990 in general, was intentionally exposed to “Episode I” first.
(I guess I’m lucky that AOTC and ROTS hadn’t come out yet, as I had a much easier time getting into the OT as it was more coherent.)

I can’t remember ever thinking movies were real, I was just really blown away when I found out just exactly how much of it was fake and how they did it. (However, I do remember that at age four I believed all TV was done live because of sitcoms.)

not a fan of that design, it looks like a book!

Well, I imagine these cars are supposed be have been made up of whatever scrap people have been able to find, hence the odd looks.

For all we know Han might be made fun of for the odd look of his “junk car”. He isn’t exactly know for his aesthetically pleasing vehicles.

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

TMZ just released some BTS photos from the Solo movie, including our first look at Ehrenreich in costume.

https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2017/05/tmz-shares-photos-from-the-han-solo-set-featuring-a-first-look-at-alden-ehrenreich-as-young-han.html

Plus, a whole bunch of speeders.
I wonder if we’ll get a bit of an American Graffiti-vibe with young Han doing a lot of racing (which would make sense in an origin story about a pilot).

And there’s this guy (who’s most likely just an extra);

I also forgot to post this when it was news, but this guy might show up at some point in the film (unless he ends up like Zuvio in TFA);

Without spoiling anything (I’m waiting for the paperback), could Thrawn fit with the original Thrawn Trilogy? I assume it wouldn’t outright contradict them, despite Canon statuses, but I guess it might.

I’m almost done with it and I can’t think of anything that conflicts with the old books. I don’t think it even directly contradicts Outbound Flight.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the new Thrawn novel. I’ve generally avoided any new EU content, but I’m really intrigued by this one (especially if I can headcanon it with the Thrawn trilogy). Unfortunately it hasn’t come out in Norway yet. (I’m thinking about buying Catalyst though.)

However, I’m surprised that it doesn’t contradict Outbound Flight. Don’t they both tell his backstory? Or is the new book only about his time with the Empire?

(I’m still skeptical about buying Outbound Flight though, as I’ve heard it has a lot of PT Anakin in it. I was hoping the new novel would be a good substitute, or would you recommend I read both?)

Lucasfilm's movie plans post Ep. IX
Time

I wouldn’t exactly call five blockbusters for “passive”. I’d imagine they’ve made a ridiculous profit on it already, and I don’t see how a hiatus of a few years could damage them financially. After all SW, unlike Marvel, isn’t based off of comics so they have to treat the two differently. A film or two each year makes sense for comic book movies, but it would make sense to be a bit more cautious with SW. Plus I’m getting the impression that Lucasfilm has maintained a lot more creative control than what was initially assumed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they just kept pumping out a new SW film every year, but I think they know their audience well enough to know that they have to thread more carefully with SW than with Marvel. Plus I imagine the merchandising alone would make SW plenty profitable even if they stopped making movies for a few years.

At the very least, they might have a relatively “long” hiatus on making saga films after E.p IX, and focus more on the anthologies. There’s still those rumours about a live action TV show, so that could replace the films for some years as well. (RO was after all originally pitched as a TV series.)

Lucasfilm's movie plans post Ep. IX
Time

As per usual these kinds of articles must be taken with a grain of salt, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway.

https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2017/03/do-not-post-lucasfilms-post-star-wars-episode-ix-plans.html

A lot of people have been worried that SW will from now on be treated similar to Marvel, with one film released pretty much every year without any breaks, but it’s suggested here that Lucasfilm might be taking a break after Ep. IX.

There seems to be a plan for a hiatus on Star Wars movies – a plan that will happen after a few years after the end of the Sequel Trilogy.

Lucasfilm will want to deliberately starve the market of Star Wars movies for a time.

In that waiting period there might be a few TV series to fill the gap.

Star Wars on television is going to become a big focus over the next few years.

It’s also possible that there won’t be any anthology films immediately after Ep. IX. Lucasfilm keeps saying that they want to make an Obi Wan film, as well as a Boba Fett film, but it’s possible that they will choose to save those for after the hiatus.

Kathleen Kennedy and the rest of Lucasfilm fully intend to make an Obi-Wan movie set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, with Ewan McGregor in tow.

If true, there’s also some hope for the Boba Fett movie;

As far as I can tell, the movie will most likely not be an origin story.

It’s not strictly a Boba Fett movie, but a film about an ensemble of bounty hunters on an adventure.

The article also suggest the possibility that Gareth Edwards might be offered to direct another SW film at some point.

Awesome Star Wars art (pic heavy!!)
Time

EDIT: I’m having some trouble with the new Dropbox setup. Does anyone know how I can properly share these photos?

(I can see the pictures on my computer, but I don’t think anyone else can see them. I’ve added the dropbox links, but I don’t know how to actually show them.)

I know the art style isn’t to everyone’s liking, but I’m a big fan of Infantino’s SW comic art, especially the covers he made specifically for the UK’s Star Wars Weekly magazine.

I had some time to kill so I photoshopped the titles and all the other text out of the artwork as best I could. From what I’ve seen online they never/rarely made “clean” artwork and usually left the space where the title would go blank, so this really is the only way to get just the art itself.

Han Solo Movie Spoiler Thread
Time

Just throwing this out here;
maybe what he meant to say was “how he made a name for himself”.

Han was already a fairly well know smuggler by the time of ANH, so this film might revolve around some big event that makes him famous in the criminal underworld. My guess would be some expansion on the Kessel Run as it hasn’t made an actual appearance in the new canon yet.

I’ve been thinking about picking up any old EU book. What are people’s favorites beyond the obvious (Thrawn trilogy, Han Solo adventures)?

I really enjoyed Shadows of the Empire.

It’s not an overly elaborate EU story as it’s set between ESB and ROTJ, and it’s just one book so you won’t have to commit to a trilogy or a whole series.

Harmy and Despecialized Edition mentioned in &quot;The Unsung Heroes of Cinema&quot; (YouTube video)
Time

The YouTube channel; The Royal Ocean Film Society, just released a video about film preservation called The Unsung Heroes of Cinema which talked about Harmy and the despecialized edition of ANH alongside discussing the preservations of Lawrence of Arabia and The Red Shoes.

It’s pretty interesting to see that fan preservations have finally gotten so much attention that one of them even gets to be more-or-less the main focus in a video about film preservation in general. It’s quite cool actually to see the guy in the video talk about people like Martin Scorsese, Robert Harris, and then Harmy in the same train of thought.

Dark Empire is mostly pretty fascinating. Kind of crosses over into the surreal almost. Worth a read to see something so different than what you’d expect a SW story to look like.

That’s exactly why I really like Dark Empire.

I’ve always felt that he EU is the place where writers/illustrators should take chances and make stories set in the SW universe without having to conform to the movie-aesthetic. They don’t really do that anymore, and I personally think it makes the EU somewhat bland and predictable.

ATMachine said:

Dark Empire is an OK take on a premise that’s inherently hard to write well. The Emperor returning in a clone body is something that sounds like a bad fanfic.

Especially since cloning tech was so little seen during the OT. If there had been more emphasis on it during the movies up to that point, it might have been more acceptable. As it is, it feels like a not-really-justified way to get the Emperor back into SW.

Well, people tend to gloss over that Palpatine wasn’t just cloned in Dark Empire. The post-PT Palpatine has become just a regular sith, but back when DE was written he was seen as much more of an mysterious ancient evil type of character. And he does specify in the comics that he has the ability to transfer his soul (or “Force ghost” I guess) into other living beings. His clones are essentially just empty shells. Also being pre-ROTS they seemed to imply that his use of the Dark Side drained him of life, hence his appearance and rapid aging.

(I would also personally say that cloning not appearing in the OT was more of an opportunity to do something new than some kind of inconsistency. We hardly get much of a look at the galaxy at large in the three OT movies, but we do know that it exists/existed. Only using what was seen in the OT would many a lot of limitations.)

Am I the only one here who genuinely likes Dark Empire?

The first one that is. DE II pushed everything a tad too far, and Empire’s End was simply underwhelming and dull. But I do feel that DE I is a great example of the EU taking the SW characters into different territory and making something that’s both familiar and vastly different at the same time. I even think the story I quite good, and I feel that a lot of the so called “inconsistencies” are quite nitpicky, and some times even evidence of people not having read it in the first place. The only big critique I personally have of DE I is how oddly it’s placed within the overall canon. And that doesn’t really impact any part of the story other than the opening crawl in the first issue.
Overall I think DE I was a great way of further exploring the conflict between Luke and the Emperor, and Luke and the Dark Side, which as many people tend to agree on, was very rushed and downplayed in ROTJ. DE I is the dark Luke story that the movies never could explore, and then some.

So I’ve been googling the Tales of the Jedi series, and the only proper collections I could find were these two omnibuses;

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Omnibus:_Tales_of_the_Jedi,_Volume_1

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Omnibus:_Tales_of_the_Jedi,_Volume_2

As far as I can tell this should be all of them.

Turns out that these two omnibuses are ridiculously hard to get a hold of (for a sane price anyway). So I’m currently trying to find the smaller collections from the 90’s which seem to be considerably more reasonably priced.

However, I’m getting a little bit confused about the publication dates. Were the Tales of the Jedi series released out of order? This list jumps back and forth in terms of publication dates. Does this list represent the correct reading order?

I found this collection of five issues for a reasonable price and figured I might start here since it has the earliest publication date, but as it’s in the middle of the list I was wondering if that would cause some confusion later on?

I see you’ve already got The Han Solo Adventures, so I will go ahead and recommend the The Lando Calrissian Adventures, as long as you don’t mind really weird things. My favorite part is when Lando is transformed into a giant inside a subterranean pyramid.

Weird’s fine with me.

(Good timing also, as I bought a collection of the Lando Adventures novels just about a week ago.)

Seeing stuff like this makes me glad that I tend to ignore pretty much any EU story written after 1999.
