I suspect they had no production photos of Dr. Ball when the comic was being drawn and just winged it. Much like they used one of the background aliens for Jabba. Did they ever make a figure of Marvel Jabba?

Oh, I’m not the least bit surprised at the presence of the green bug-eye droid from the comic, especially considering, as you mentioned, how Jabba turned into a tusk-less yellow walrus in an orange imperial uniform. I just thought it was funny that Hasbro decided to repaint Vader, Tarkin and the Rebel soldier to make them more retro, but instead of copying the comic interrogation droid, they just took a ball-droid and painted it green. I’m surprised they didn’t just take a Death Star Droid and repainted that green. I would assume that is what Chaykin used as reference.

Even Hasbro was faithful to the original colors with their comic packs line.

Neat. I don’t really collect figures unless they have some display value alongside my SW books, but I definitely need to get some of these (and my Thrawn figure could use some company).

Did these figures come with copies of the original comics like a lot of the Hasbro figures did back then? It’d be interesting to see what they looked like. Was this before or after the ‘restored’ comics that Dark Horse released in 2002? EDIT: They are from 2007.

Weird that they included the ball-droid, as the droid in the actual comic was more human-like in shape. At least they made it green.

Since the 2015 recolouring of ANH was so heavily criticized earlier in this thread (and I agree that it’s not very good) I’m curious about what people here think about the 1997 “special edition” re-coloured version.

I personally kind of like it. I had both the 1977 (Scandinavian colours) and the 1997 versions as a kid, and though I’ve always preferred the crazy 70’s colours, or anything that is original for that matter, I do think that the 1997 version managed to make the comic look more like the movie without resorting to all the gimmicks that the most recent version did.

I’ve read both. In fact, I read Mindor right after Truce.

There’s small references early in the book. That’s it. Mindor is very standalone, you don’t need to read any other EU to get it (though apparently one or two characters from Stover’s prequel-era books appear in Mindor, but I haven’t read any of those and wasn’t lost or confused).

Ok, thanks.

I’ve been reading a lot of post-ROTJ novels out of order, and it has been a little bit confusing at times. I do intend to read Truce at Bakura at some point, but at the moment Shadows of Mindor has piqued my interest a bit more.

Has anyone here read both “Truce at Bakura” and “Shadows at Mindor”?

From what I’ve gathered, Shadows of Mindor takes place shortly (or immediately?) after Truce at Bakura, but what I haven’t been able to figure out (I know little to nothing about both books so I try to avoid spoilers) is if they’re connected in some serious way. Should I read Shadows of Mindor after Truce at Bakura, or does it not matter?

what are people here’s favorite issues or story lines from the series ?

Pretty much any of the issues written by Archie Goodwin and drawn by Carmine Infantino. Those really are the highlights of the entire original Marvel run for me. Everything after ESB, is fine, but to me they don’t quite have the same charm and great mix between cartoony and serious that Goodwin managed to pull off.

One of my goals whenever I’m visiting the US is to get original copies of all of the Goodwin/Infantino issues (plus whatever else I can get my hands on from both orig. Marvel and Dark Horse).

So far I only have the first storyline with the Dragonlords, and some of the stand-alone stories set in between the Baron Tagge storylines.

I’m personally not a big fan of the Aduba-3 storyline, the Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven in space idea was a pretty cool idea, but it was a tad too silly for me. However, does anyone know why Chaykin stopped writing SW after this storyline and why he was replaced by Goodwin? I’ve heard that Lucas didn’t like the way he was handling the stories so he requested he be replaced. Can anyone verify is that’s true or just speculation?

I am wondering if there is a difference between colors in the various reprint trades.

You should see what they did to the original Marvel comics in Scandinavia. Not only did they have their own colours, but they even edited the art itself to make it all fit within these big album sized comics.

Imgur

Some examples of the editing they often did;
2 pages from the restored version of issue #31 “Return to Tatooine” (from the Dark Horse “A LONG TIME AGO” TPB) on the left, and the Norwegian album version from 1982 on the right)

(PS. The movie adaptation of ANH didn’t even bother to make the colours similar, but they did at least never altered the art in any serious way.)

I recently found my old copies of the movie adaptation comics for the PT that I bought when I was a kid, and much to my surprise the AOTC comic was actually pretty good. Obviously the confusing story and much of the bad dialogue was still there, but the overall visuals were much more interesting than what actually ended up in the movie. (No wonder I read the comic more than I actually watched the movie.)

Just take the scene where Anakin kills the Sand People;

The film version is pretty standard. Several wide-shots and a few closer shots. Boring and safe. It doesn’t really convey the gravity of the situation all that well.

Imgur

Now, compare that to the comic version however;

Just look at how much more interesting this is. This feels like the beginning of the ‘slaughter’ that it was supposed to be, as opposed to the more action-esque scene we actually got in the movie.

Overall, compared to most movie adaptations, which tend to be pretty crap (the OT and especially ANH are exceptions), this series actually has some pretty great art.

^that crazy Sasquatch thing from that game in that guy’s back yard on Tatooine scared the shit out of me.

I assume you mean this guy?

Yeah, it was pretty weird. However I quickly figured out how to ‘cheat’ to kill it so I guess I never saw it as being that scary. Funnily, I did however find the hobos on Coruscant to be pretty scary. I don’t really know why, they were just kinda creepy and that whole level really messed with my head as a kid for some reason.

The two Tatooine levels were so much fun, and I pretty much discovered every little secret and glitch that was available in those two levels. And since the game allowed you to kill NPC’s, and since I’d found pretty much everything that could be found, I made it my task to kill every NPC in those levels. And, after several days of hard work and practice, I actually succeeded. (I had way too much time on my hand when I was a kid).

The gun Rey used in Takodana was one of the most toy-y guns yet in the Star Wars saga in my opinion… the royalty ones that Padmé used in TPM looked like something that came out of a James Bond movie.

Have a hard time agreeing with either of those statements.

We’ll have to agree to disagree, then! Rey’s gun looked nice and different, and I really liked its design. I just think it was a bit too toy like.

It could just be the prop itself. They probably 3D printet Rey’s blaster (and all the ST blasters), whereas the OT props were usually made from real gun parts.

Not sure about Padme’s blaster though. It might have been made from real metal at the very least.

I don’t really know why would you expect it.

I don’t see why you wouldn’t.

It wouldn’t make any sense. Also it’d be stupid.

You’re not expecting some stupid pandering fan service? That ‘we’re all fine’ quip in the trailer was only the beginning.

I don’t get how people manage to interpret the “we’re fine” line as fan-service. It’s a logical thing for an overconfident bragged like Han to say in that situation. And calling it a reference to ANH is just strange to me. What else should he have said? It’s a perfectly ordinary sentence. It’s not like every combination of words used in a SW movie counts as a ‘reference’.

(BTW, he doesn’t say “we’re all fine”, he just says “…it’s fine. We’re fine.”)

Hey, that EW cover image actually looks pretty snazzy.

But does Chewbacca seem a little short…?

It’s just a magazine cover. I think they were more concerned about fitting them both within the frame than acurately representing their heights in the movie.

(However, just FYI, Peter Mayhew is 2.18 meters tall and Joonas Suotamo is 2.11 m.)

I think it will be open ended. It’s better to be able to continue the adventures of young Solo.

How old was Han Solo in ANH?

29/30

Yep, although in general Star Wars is vague with character ages and timeframes. I actually don’t even know where this number comes from but it seems to be generally agreed upon.

They might change his age in the new canon to be closer to Ford’s real age in the OT. Then again, both Obi-Wan and Mon Mothma has aged pretty weirdly in the current canon, so they might not bother to alter anything.

Oof… They’ve Trek’09ed it.

I don’t think it’s too fair a comparison. This is after all the Falcon when it was Lando’s ship. And it makes a lot of sense that a ship belonging to a guy who owned a place that looked like this, would own a ship that looked like the EW picture above, as opposed to the ANH screenshot (which is more appropriate for two smugglers less concerned about aesthetics).

We haven’t really gotten that good of an idea what the rich and classy looked like in SW, apart from the PT. After all the OT mostly focused on military bases and backwater places like Tatooine. The closes we got was Cloud City, which was very shiny and elegant. But even that was referred to as a “small mining operation.”

HelloGreedo’s trailer review. One of the more level-headed reactions/reviews on YouTube.

I also agree that the most important part about Ehrenreich’s performance will hinge on his attitude, not how he looks or what he sounds like, but if he manages to capture the attitude of Han Solo. And of course this is a backstory film, so he won’t be exactly like Han in the OT. This one should be less experienced, cocky externally but less sure of himself internally.

These loo a lot like the dice from the Falcon? There’s been speculation that they’d show up since they were so ‘important’ in TLJ, and a lot of people assumed they were the dice he used to win the Falcon from Lando. It would be interesting if he had these dice throughout the entire film for some reason. Maybe this film will do more than just show them in the game, but give them some larger importance to Han’s character.
