General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

One thing that’s interesting to me in JW Rinzler’s Howard Kazanjian biography is that allegedly one reason David Lynch turned down doing ROTJ was that he didn’t want to make a film that would be scored with John Williams’ music. I know Lynch generally prefers unsettling audio tracks rather than orchestral music pieces in his own work, but it’s still frankly startling (and certainly ballsy) for a a director to say they wouldn’t want a John Williams score if they directed a Star Wars movie.

I wonder how he felt about Toto’s work on DUNE. Was that something Dino De Laurentiis insisted on, perhaps?

From what I’ve understood Lynch simply didn’t like the idea of making a film according to someone else’s ideas, i.e. being restricted by Lucas’ story ideas. The music might have been a part of this concern, but I think Lynch simply didn’t care for SW.

Lynch talks about his meeting with Lucas in this 3 min. video;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJQ4vCu-S0U&t

As for the Toto music in Dune, I’ve been wondering about this as well, but I suspect the Brian Eno music was more in line with Lynch’s wishes and that Toto was De Laurentiis’ idea, though I still get the impression that there was a direct collaboration none-the-less. It’s hard to tel with Dune because it’s not like Lynch was kicked off the project but rather that he was contractually strong-armed into making multiple changes to the film against his original vision. So ironically he ended up in a similar position to hat he’d have to endure if he’d said yes to direct ROTJ.

Yep. That’s the only reason I’m very strongly against SE Emperor - I don’t mind the makeup or the altered dialogue that much in general - but “offspring of Anakin Skywalker” kills it for me. It makes infinitely more sense for us to learn that name in an intimate moment with Luke and Ben, after Yoda passes and confirms Luke’s greatest fear. It’s a very deep and delicate scene, perfect for us to learn his name. And, of course, if you miss it, Luke says it to Vader in his face later on, also a good moment.

I suppose in the context of the PT, which is what the 2004 SEs were for, it makes more sense for the Emperor to say that than just “Luke Skywalker”, but looking at the OT as a trilogy, that’s a no no.

Almost like George Lucas designed the saga so the prequels are meant to be watched first or something…

Technically true, yes, but you’d think he’d at least remember to actually explain the Force in ep. 1 then. This confused me so much as a kid. Thankfully ep. 2 & 3 hadn’t been made yet so I didn’t have to wait long for the explanation. Either way, the saga is kind of a mess to fully understand if watched from ep. 1 to 6 IMO. Of course most people know these things already or know someone who does, but I don’t think you should have to rely on outside sources to understand movies.

Doesn’t the sarlacc also keep its victims alive inside? I wonder how long he was in there. Cob Vanth had his armor for a while. Maybe Boba hadn’t been free all that long and is just now going about setting this right.

That’s a really interesting, not to mention disturbing, idea that I don’t think I’ve ever heard theorized before. Theoretically someone should be able to survive months, maybe even years or centuries, inside a Sarlacc before they’re too far gone to come back out. It might be a bit too grim for Disney SW, but I do like the idea that he spent some time tortured inside the Sarlacc, giving him plenty of time to reconsider his life. Maybe he got amnesia or temporarily lost his mind like Maul did? Either of these ideas could explain why it took him about 5 years to go looking for his armour.

How “Star Wars” Flopped a Shot

I was watching 4K77 a few days ago and ever since I saw the RocketJump Film School mini-documentary about the editing of ANH I’ve been unable to not notice many of the problem-solving edits, and creative workarounds used in the film, but I’ve never noticed this one before.

As someone who has directed several shorts films, as well as having done a fair bit of editing, I find these creative solutions really fascinating and also very relatable. It does unfortunately make it much harder for me to just enjoy the film the same way I used to, but at the same time it has given me a whole new appreciation of the hard work that went into the film.

PS. Did you make this video or did you just find it on YT? Either way, it should be “flipped” not “flopped”. When I first saw the post I was a bit confused about how a shot could flop.

For some reason I’ve never noticed until now that the first mentioning of the name Anakin is when Ben talks to Luke on Dagobah. I always thought the conversation between Luke and Vader on Endor was the first time. It’s fascinating how casually they drop the name, as if we were just supposed to already know who it referred to (not that it’s particularly hard to figure out based on the conversation).

I find very few youtube channels I enjoy listening too regarding Star Wars. Star Wars Explained is one, and sometimes Hello Greedo. The rest are tiresome and I refuse to reward their click-bait efforts.

Click-bait titles are unfortunately often a necessity for YouTubers to stay afloat, plus compared to a lot of the nonsense that is on YT these days I’d say that Eckhardladder’s titles are quite mild. I sometimes forget that I often automatically filter through the hyperbole in titles based on my knowledge the YouTubers.

Marvel does have the benefit of a multitude of source material to cherry pick the best from, but even they are not entirely immune. They parted ways with Edgar Wright over differences regarding Ant-Man, and it looks like they currently have drama surrounding their sequel to Black Panther.

There was a problem with Rogue One, but they dealt with it and I love how it turned out. Benioff and Weiss turned out to be not as creative when George R.R. Martin couldn’t keep the source material coming at the same pace as the show. I wish them well and will be interested in what they end up making for Netflix. I do think the problems with Solo were allowed to drag on for too long. That’s a problem that should have been corrected sooner and could have saved them some money. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why they’re quicker to move on now.

I know they’ve said Rian Johnson, Taika Waititi, and Kevin Feige are all working on projects, but nothing is guaranteed. I don’t think Lucasfilm has been over-hyping anything, just that fans are so eager to know what’s coming next, we get excited over just the idea of something. Also nothing seems to make as good of click-bait material as Star Wars pseudo-news.

Right now we have three Star Wars series ready to go (Boba Fett, Obi-Wan, Andor), and they’re currently making Ahsoka and a third season of The Mandalorian. I’m not sure what’s next for the big screen, but looks like we’ll have plenty to look forward to until then.

Yeah, I agree with all of that. I think maybe we’re reacting to different fan reactions to this cancellation though. The video I linked to probably sounded angrier in the title than what was actually expressed in the video, which was only mild frustration at the uncertainty of the new shows and movies.

PS. I did say that the MCU had had a few creative differences throughout the years, but the way it had been done has for the most part been handled differently than the way Lucasfilm have IMO.

Sure, this series cancellation makes perfect sense under the circumstances (though of course there’s a lot to say about the circumstances as well). Overall though, I think a lot of fans are just annoyed by all the uncertainty. Rangers makes sense, but it is also the latest of several cancelled or indefinitely delayed projects in just the past few years.

I think Lucasfilm is trying a bit too hard to imitate the MCU/Kevin Feige model of planning everything years in advance, despite the fact that there clearly hasn’t been much of a grand plan (TROS is definitely proof of that). Sure the MCU has had failed projects too, but nothing like what we’ve seen with SW in just the last five to six years, so I think it’s completely fair for fans to be a bit concerned/annoyed by the seeming indecisiveness of it all.

Although I’m personally somewhat indifferent to both Rangers of the New Republic and the Rogue Squadron movie I agree with the broad strokes of what EckhartsLadder had to say on the matter;

Rangers of the New Republic Likely CANCELLED… I’m so tired of the BS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpuVMa9aFjQ - from the EckhartsLadder YT channel (9 mins long).

I agree that it can be hard to get excited for new SW projects now that it has become apparent that most of Lucasfilm’s future plans is just a case of spitballing and half of it could end up being scrapped. I get that projects can be announced based purely on a plot outline and maybe some loose pre-production work, but at least The Book of Boba Fett wasn’t announced without it being clear that it was being made. Sometimes it’s better to keep a planned project secret, or at least vague, until you know it’s going to get made. F.ex. if Taika Waitit’s SW film gets cancelled I can’t say I’d be too annoyed as I have absolutely no idea what his plans were (if there even were any). But the moment you announce a series/movie with a name, a setting, a theme, a known character, etc. and then it gets canned, well, that feels like a bit of a waste of time and fan involvement.

I also wanted to do some prototyping for a 1:144 ship stand (with built in suspended blaster bolts). Both could use a little more work, but I am very happy with the results.”

Luke Skywalker Splits an AT-ST
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-H79nORaBI - from the Boylei Hobby Time YouTube channel (8 mins long).

The blurb:
“This week, I built something I’ve been thinking of doing for a while. I played the game The Force Unleashed a ton when it came out 10+ years ago, and I always loved the boss battles. There were two or three different finishing moves at the end of the AT-ST mini boss fights, and my favorite was when Starkiller jumped up and sliced the walker in half. This scene was inspired by that sequence from the game, but I adapted it to feature Luke as the Jedi doing the slicing. ‘Cause let’s be real, Luke is the best.”

That trailer is growing on me - I love that doesn’t show too much… but what it does show is the series may be a somewhat different take on what some of us may have been expecting. Looking forward to seeing more trailers and previews for the BoBF show.

Ditto, and I also realized that some of the things that might be familiar and somewhat mundane to us SW geeks, like the
B’omarr spider-droid, would be quite weird and shocking to more casual fans. Looking back at the trailers for The Mandalorian, as well as the Filoni animated series, I think it’s fair to assume that he has a good amount of influence over the marketing at this point and that really understands the importance of not spoiling these things. And I’m sure that Lucasfilm is at this well aware of how hard it is to not spoil things to SW fans. I’m hoping that this “simple” trailer is a sign that there’s a lot of unexpected things in wait for us with this series.

OK, this one’s a bit of a cheat as you can’t find the whole short on YouTube, however, two separate official channels have uploaded both halves of this famous cartoon, so it I think it counts.

The Cat Concerto (1947)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpEfHVFilRc - Part 1 from the WB Kids YouTube channel (5 mins long)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtLpv6huG3A - Part 2 from the Boomerang Official YouTube channel (2 mins long).

Synopsis:
Tom Cat is a concert pianist who plays beautifully until he is interrupted by Jerry Mouse.

Directed by Joseph Barbera & William Hanna.

Trivia:
• Following its release, it was met with critical acclaim, and is considered one of the best Tom and Jerry cartoons. It won the 1946 Oscar for Best Short Subject: Cartoons.
• The same year MGM produced The Cat Concerto, Warner Bros. released a very similar Bugs Bunny cartoon called Rhapsody Rabbit, directed by Friz Freleng, with Bugs against an unnamed mouse. Both shorts used near identical gags, the same piece by Franz Liszt, and had similar endings. Both MGM and Warner Bros. accused each other of plagiarism, after both films were submitted for the 1947 Academy Awards ceremony. Technicolor was accused of sending a print of either cartoon to the competing studio, which then allegedly plagiarized their rival’s work. This remains uncertain even today.

Synopsis:
Mickey must save Pluto from a mad doctor’s lair.

Directed by David Hand.

Cast: Walt Disney, Billy Bletcher & Pinto Colvig.

Trivia:
The short’s horror overtones made it unusual for a Mickey Mouse cartoon. Some theaters refused to show it, believing it to be too scary for kids. At one time, for this reason, it was banned entirely in the United Kingdom, as well as Nazi Germany.

Fair enough, I stand corrected technology-wise, but I would still argue that Anakin doing Neo-like stuff kinda goes against the rules of the SW universe (at the time anyway) and the overall themes. Besides, the pod-race scene in TPM certainly showcased his special talents and the first action scene of AOTC does have him do some pretty spectacular feats (though within certain lore and narrative restrictions). Anakin also never really got reach his full potential in the movies either. He’s a kid in ep. 1, a padawan in ep. 2 and he turns to the dark side in ep. 3. And this “problem” is more or less why Lucas commissioned two Clone Wars cartoons.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

Keep in mind that to Lucas the light side of the Force isn’t mean to manifest itself in flashy and extraordinary feats, though yes, some showing rather than telling would have been nice. Of course Anakin’s near-prescient reflexes made him the only human pod-racer, and Anakin jumping off the speeder at the start of AOTC is certainly far more elaborate than anything they even could have attempted to show in the OT. The PT did in so many ways create the CG tech we now take for granted that, yes, the probably were too restricted to do too many crazy things…but, we’re saying this from the viewpoint of modern cinema with it’s plethora of superheroes doing all sorts of crazy and over the top things. And there’s my first point that this isn’t really what Jedi are supposed to do, though again, ironically, one of the biggest arguments against the PT, both back the and even nowadays, is that the Jedi became too flashy.

However, you could also argue that Anakin reaching the level he was at in AOTC despite having only been trained for ten years (at his age it should have been nearly double that) shows his unique skills. But again, Lucas had good ideas with subpar execution in the PT, and who’s to say that being the chosen one means you have to be a god-tier Jedi? I think the prophecy had more to do with simply being the person that would bring balance to the Force, not necessarily being some Force God like they did with Galen Marek (Force Unleashed) and to a somewhat lesser degree, Rey.

I think a lot of this stuff simply relates to audience expectation now that we’ve had over 20 years of CG and several dozen superhero movies that SW has to compete with for people’s attention.
