Happy Birthday George Lucas!
Time

Despite disagreeing with a some of his more “recent” decisions, Lucas is still one of my favourite filmmakers and one of my biggest creative influences.

Also, here’s the rest of his amazing Japanese Panasonic commercials from the 80’s & 90’s.

is there a hd version from “the making of star wars” available?
the same from the empire making of´s…

TN1’s working on a restoration of a 16mm print of “The Making of Star Wars”, but as for right now there’s only an upscale version available. They’re also working on a 16mm print of “SPFX: The Empire Strikes Back.”

Any idea if they could use more than one print of those? Asking for a friend…

I just scrolled/skimmed through the forum to see what they had available other than just the movies, so all I know is that both are being worked on.

Making-Of Documentaries - YouTube/Vimeo/etc. finds
Time

I honestly can’t remember seeing a lot of documentary series about the making of games, but this series was fantastic and it really gave me a completely new appreciation for what goes into the making of PC games.

Double Fine Adventure!
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIhLvue17Sd7F6pU2ByRRb0igiI-WKk3D - playlist from the official DoubleFineProd YouTube channel (21 videos, 20-30 mins average per episode).

The blurb:
“This landmark documentary series allows everyone to share in the passion, humor, and heartbreak of making “Broken Age”! Featuring twenty episodes plus a host of new special features, the Double Fine Adventure is the most in-depth look at video game development ever produced.”

They also made a similar 3-part making-of for the remastered version of Grim Fandango (one of the most origina PC games ever made IMO), as well as the remastered version of Day of the Tentacle & Full Throttle.

The Making of Grim Fandango Remastered
Part 1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNhE7zxJymE (12:30 mins long)
Part 2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-LSMCYjHow (7:30 mins long)
Part 3 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4rOgZ3RINE (15 mins long)
from the official DoubleFineProd YouTube channel.

The blurb:
“The makers of Grim Fandango discuss the development of the beloved adventure game and how Double Fine Productions plans to release the original classic to a contemporary audience.”

The Making of Day of the Tentacle Remastered
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjF4eMrYfG0 - from the official DoubleFineProd YouTube channel (12:30 mins long).

The blurb:
“Originally released by LucasArts in 1993 as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travel, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world! Now, over twenty years later, Day of the Tentacle is back in a remastered edition that features all new hand-drawn, high resolution artwork, with remastered audio, music and sound effects”

The Making of Full Throttle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS9_HODguwU - from the official DoubleFineProd YouTube channel (11 mins long).

The blurb:
“Tim Schafer recounts his time at LucasArts and the many influences that helped create the classic adventure game Full Throttle.”

So, rearranging 525 pictures manually in an imgur post isn’t exactly my idea of fun. So unless there’s an easy way to share an imgur gallery that I don’t know about, I’m going to have to do it another way. Any suggestions? I’d prefer an option were the images can be arranged by name, otherwise the whole thing will be a complete mess to scroll through.

why would you upload pics from a making of that can everybody watch?
isn´t it better upload stuff that isn´t watchable, only exists as pics?
only a suggestion…

Because I figured it’d be nice to have pictures as well? Some of my screenshots might be a tad excessive or unnecessary, sure, but sometimes docs show things/details that aren’t available in image form so I figured why not take screenshots? That’s just me though, I like to have pictures of these things.

I'll never understand the attitude of people who oppose the release of the unaltered original trilogy.

It has been my observation that most pro SE people who support the suppression or the original cuts are ignorant about film and video tech in general. A lot of people don’t seem to understand what “HD” or “4K” even really mean and act as if they are some sort of application that you apply to old films to make them look better.

I literally got into an argument with someone in the comments for an upload of a Star Trek Generations deleted scene on YouTube that was from a barely watchable multi generational VHS copy of a workprint, which was then uploaded to YouTube in sub SD quality. This person seemed to think that movies come out of the camera in this kind of dog shit lo-rez VHS quality and that they use some kind of magic “upscaler” to make films look the way they do when they are released.

If only that were possible. To make those shot-on-video TV shows like Doctor Who or Fresh Prince of Bel-Air look like film would be a godsend for me.

This might actually become a common practice in the future. Fans have already begun using machine learning to upscale Deep Space 9 to HD. It looks surprisingly good already, and who knows where this might go as the software improves. My biggest worry is that it will be used as a cheap alternative to proper remasters, even of shows that were shot on film, but for shows that were shot on video or outdated digital formats this could be a great solution.

Childhood Misconceptions (aka The Trap Thread, but misconceptions still welcome)

Speaking of misconceptions from this scene, before I saw ROTJ in HD I always though that this pillow was a part of Jabba’s body. When you see it in VHS quality it looks like some kind of weird flesh-bulge and it always grossed me out as a kid, especially since it looked like Salacious Crumb was partially inside it like some kind of marsupial pouch.

Seems this pillow was added to cover up the puppeteer. To bad they chose a colour and pattern that, at least in HS quality, really blended in with Jabba’s leathery skin.

I actually think Lynch could have done a pretty good job, that is if he’d been interested in doing a SW film in the first place (which he clearly weren’t). SW is for all intents and purposes pretty weird, and the aliens and “science” of it is straight-up surreal if you really start to break them down. Plus its not like Lucas would have allowed him to make it Eraserhead-weird. Dune and The Elephant Man are after all pretty tame compared to his other films, even Twin Peaks can be quite “normal” at times, and if you were to add Lucas and Kasdan into the mix I honestly don’t think it would have have stood out as particularly “Lynchian” at all.

Either way, now that we got Werner Herzog in the Mandalorian, someone should try to get a Lynch cameo in one of the upcoming seasons/series. Now that would be interesting.

I think that shot of George boarding the plane is where my old off air VHS recording cut off.

I forgot to point this out, but the 16mm version does the same. It’s pretty abrupt and strange, especially since it happened after the end credits.

BTW, the order of the screneshots got all messed up in the imgur album so I’ll have to re-upload a lot of them. I’ll post the link to the whole album some time tomorrow.

So I just finished taking over 500 screenshots from the TN1 16mm scans of the Classic Creatures and From Star Wars to Jedi documentaries and I’d like to share a link to the photos. What’s the best way to do that? I normally upload photos to imgur if I want to share them here, but for so many I’d like to make an album of some sort and just post some of the highlights. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Never mind. Making an imgur album was easier than I thought. I’ll post the link and some highlights later today.

Have those been released? It drove me crazy that prints of both docs popped up on ebay last year when I was strapped for cash. I’d been searching for them for years.

Yeah, they were both included with 4K83 as bonus features.
