Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)

Do you think it could be a bit rate issue because of the number of audio tracks? Or do you think it's just a software problem? If it's the former, it might just need to be muxed into an MKV and released as a video file instead of a DVD.

Either way, I'd be happy to do a proper video enhancement if you want to send me the files.

Inferring from general silence, in the community, I'm guessing that the KCCI, KCMO, and WMAR discs are are the only ones floating around in the wild.

I'd never looked closely at the WBBM files because I assumed they were only partial. They're not. Twelve parts, but all the material is there. And the quality's pretty good -- for something half the dimensions / quarter the area of a standard screen.

Anyone know where these files came from? I'm playing about with DVDStyler, just for fun, but it's always better to have an original than to downconvert and then upscale.

My "hybrid" release is actually the WBBM version with the commercials from the WMAR version added in. I got the WBBM DVD from the guy at fuzzymemories.tv. I made a donation to his web site and he agreed in exchange to give me a copy of the master DVD he had, which looks to have been made using a standard DVD recorder rather than a computer. The video quality suffers a little bit because of that, but overall it's very good quality because the source tape was only 2nd generation and in such good condition.

When I have the time, I'm going to be revisiting my hybrid release and making several improvements. The top two items on my list are to include the higher-quality versions of the commercials (the ones posted on a.b.sw), and also to remove all the jaggies which I can't believe I forgot to address the first time around. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Info Wanted: 'Industrial Light & Magic - Creating the Impossible' - anyone preserving this?
Time

Eh, Encore comes free with my satellite package so I didn't pay anything extra for it. I thought it was a good doc, though maybe a lot of what they covered has already been seen on DVD special features. All the interviews were new though, and I did notice that some of the footage shown of the TPM pre-production meetings was new, or at least wasn't included on the TPM DVD.

Thanks! I actually spent a long while trying to come up with something unique that wasn't too cheesy. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I probably should have color corrected the transition (since it came from the 2004 DVD) and added a second or two of slug at the end, but other than that I'm pretty happy with it.

I have no idea what their sales are like, but the Holiday Special is one of their highest-rated riffs according to their site, so I have to assume it's a good seller. I'm sure all their riffs of the Star Wars/Star Trek/Harry Potter/LOTR franchises are big sellers. I purchased all the Star Wars riffs even though I still have yet to watch TPM or ROTJ. Having never seen Transformers 2 previously, I bought that riff and watched it that way for the first time, which was awesome. I may do one of the Twilight movies next. :p

It's 1 hour, and a very good doc by the way. Lots of Star Wars.

It's a Dish Network DVR and I know that they're encrypted so you can't swap the drive out and put it in your PC. With my previous Dish DVR, I was able to run a SATA cable from the drive to a USB adapter on my PC after the drive had already spun up inside the DVR, and that allowed me to use a special program for copying things over. It didn't really work for HD content though as it couldn't read anything that was MPEG4, which I'm pretty sure all Dish's HD is now. I might give it a try though just to see if it's possible.

Anyone going to Celebration V?
Time

none managed to track me down on Thursday, but I only had one copy of the DVD at the time since I hadn't had time to make more and couldn't give him one. All three of us had made plans to meet up later at the con, but it didn't happen for multiple reasons.

However, I did play my HS DVD at a party on Saturday night, for a group of people who were grumbling when I put it in. 10 minutes later they were all laughing their heads off at the RiffTrax.

So definitely follow 005's advice and donate a few bucks to the RiffTrax guys if you manage to get a copy of one of their riffs without paying.

If you are and you happen to find me, I'll be giving away copies of my never-before-seen Star Wars Holiday Special DVD to anyone who asks. This is a beta version of a cleaned up and color-corrected version of the Holiday Special complete with RiffTrax commentary.

The best place to find me is at the FanForce/Jedi Council Forums booth in the Expo hall. I'll be the guy with the red hair answering to "Ben" or "that JC head admin guy". If I'm not there, you can ask them to text me.

I'd love to talk preservations or fan edits or just OT.com in general, so hit me up!

I believe that would be the newest KCCI version that Rikter released.

Love the screens Moth3r. It'll be interesting to see how the next version compares. I should probably note that my comment above about the RiffTrax version was in comparison to an earlier Angrysun release - not the KCCI like I had thought.

And yes, definitely donate a few bucks to the RiffTrax guys if you've happened upon a DVD with one of their commentaries. Those guys are awesome and they make some of these DVDs (especially this one) a bit more enjoyable.

Discussion forums are for reading and small text compressed into the centre of the screen doesn't necessarily lead to a better reading experience.

On the contrary, would you enjoy reading a book that was 3 feet wide and had small text?

Most people find it easier to read text that is contained in a smaller area than text that is spread out across a wide space because it's easier for your eyes to follow down to the next line.
