.: The X0 Project Discussion Thread :. (* unfinished project *)
Time
That's an impressive site. And if the 2004 DVD's had the picture quality you guys have, I would've been totally happy with it, it's that good.

I have but one question. I may have misinterpreted what your site said, but if you're not distributing this thing (again please correct me if I'm wrong) then why ask for donations, if it's just a private project? Indeed why publicise it at all? I understand the invaluable resources you're putting together (the colour correcting articles alone are pretty spiffy stuff) but why make it a page about your laserdisc transfer if nobody sees hide nor hair of it?

I feel like I'm reading something wrong (it could be that it's 2 AM). Please correct me, (preferably as well as you corrected the colour on those DVD stills. You guys are masters).

Excellent work, keep it up.

EDIT

"Our team cannot, for obvious legal reasons, make its work freely available, but no laws can prevent the sharing of the ideas and techniques—from IVTC to rotoscoping, and from aspect ratios to film scanning—that make The XØ Project the best of its kind.

Our team aims to make The XØ Project site the rallying point for those who wish to keep alive the versions of 'Star Wars', 'The Empire Strikes Back', and 'Return of the Jedi' that we all know and love—free from the countless "improvements" made to latter-day versions."

Does that mean that while you're making it, you're not showing bits of what you're working on because the Hammer of Lucasfilm will fall on your head? Or does it just mean that this will remain a private thing? Again - I see no problem with making your own and keeping it (I've been inclined to do similar things myself) but am just wondering if this means it will be released like othe transfers, or if this XO site will merely be a sort of resources page for similar efforts.

The Prequels - my personal opinion
Time
What is this, Star Wars Fans Anonymous?
Let me contribute!

I'm also 19, loved TPM when it came out and came to realise over the years that it wasn't that great. But I've matured FURTHER, and accepted that the original movies weren't perfect either. Let's face it, movies inherently suck. You've just got to accept that basic fact and decide not to focus on the fact that The Red Sea parting looks hokey, or the fact that in front of Gandalf's 'heroic charge' is some blatant Adobe CLONE STAMPING, or the fact that Anakin's knife doesn't accurately chop up his CG Pear, or the fact that Bruce Willis' gun never runs out of ammo until the worst possible moment...

Jeeze! You don't have to defend the movies, and you don't have to defend your liking them, or even your right to like them. They're just a bunch of images and sound played concurrently, and believe it or not whether or not they suck or are great is ACTUALLY dependent on the person. A perfect movie (and I've been shown quite a few of those, and nearly always think they suck) would have everyone agreeing that it's perfect. Personal opinion would not come down to it - this movie (the hypothetical perfect one) would cross all barriers of taste and criticism and simply be the best. It doesn't exist and it never will, which basically means if you show a good movie and a bad movie to a rock, they'll recieve the same reception - Total Silence.

This means that there is no good movie, and no bad movie. It's all in your head.

I can't deny I like some movies more than others (among my favoured movies are "You Can't Stop the Murders", "Napoleon Dynamite", "The Princess Bride" "Lord of the Rings" and "Star Wars"), but at least I can accept that these preferences are my qualities/failings alone. They are not the fault of the filmmaker.

The death star
Time
I don't get how people think 2 death stars is unrealistic?

Ok, let's compare the movies with real life.

The Movies: Death Star is built, blown up by assholes. New one is built - same fate.

Real life examples of human stupidity!
The luxury liners of the 19th/20th century. They were huge, costly and eventually unecessary, and a lot of them sank. But they kept building more!
Twin Towers. Knocked down by REAL assholes, but look we're building more at great expense.
Jackass - totally redundant program where idiots do dumb things. That went on for a while didn't it?

Look, I actually find the redundant construction of 2 Death Stars one of the more convincing human elements in Star Wars. It's such a stupid, human thing to do! In fact I'm surprised there wasn't about ten of the damned things.

An edit of the films to remove one of the Death Stars would only exemplify the message of human stubborness displayed by the costly construction of those technological terrors, so fire away!

Six DVD set to look like this?
Time
A couple of years ago i would've complained, but I say bring on the changes.

But this list is an obvious fake and I'll you why. "Tarzan call removed". Why would they incorporate one in Episode 3 (because they love the joke so much) only to rip it off the movies later?

Seriously though I really want to see the movies changed again (rendering void Lucas' suggestions that this is his 'original vision' when he doesn't have one). That and I actually like seeing generations of changes, it's interesting to watch someone's idea change. That - and I can't wait to see Jimmy Smits bite the dust. He'll look sadder than when he found out he wasn't invited to the L.A Law reunion bash.

Why Kill Padme?
Time
Christ oh Mighty, if you can believe in ships that not only perform impossible manouevers in space but also make a lot of sound at the same time (point being - no sound in space) then is it beyond the realms of possibility that maybe the Force (the thing that makes those Jedi able to do all that other stuff that's impossible) made Leia remember her mum? It really isn't that hard to imagine, but people need this sort of thing spoon fed to them these days. No imagination.

Things you DID NOT like about Episode III
Time
Hang about:

I have some questions and could the eminenly wise person a few posts above mine please answer?
1. What is a true Star Wars fan, exactly?
2. How does liking Ep1, 2 or 3 for that matter make them NOT a true fan?
3. Is it fair to be such a damned Nazi towards them, just because they happen to like a movie?

Now be honest, if someone walks up to me and says "Pearl Harbour was great", I kick the bastard. But come on, sucky as Star Wars can be, it isn't deserving of that kind of vitriole. I don't think I've seen a single thread called "Things you LIKED about Episode III". It's all full of people so preoccupied with trying to promote their image as tasteful folk who know something about movies (it ain't fooling anyone) that they really can't see past their own pimply noses and say 'well screw it, it wasn't THAT bad'. (Seriously, you want a bad film, go rent "Gladiator" or "Double Team").

EW asks readers to answer our 'Sith' questions
Time
I don't care about any of this. I have a DVD of ANH that I'm happy with now (Moth3r's). I reckon Lucas should just wait 20 years, then replace Alec Guiness and Sebastian Shaw with the properly aged actors from the prequels. I think it's a terrible idea, but really - I've got the movie I want, and it'll fix people's complaints about "HEY THAT IS NOT HIM OMG LOLZ".

Reasons why the O-OT is better than the SE
Time
What's really great is that out of the 3 stills you posted, only one makes any sense - the 3rd one. The first two look like crap, the guy is not a visionary. If I were in that kind of money, I'd go over every bloody frame with a fine tooth comb before I let this kind of amateur CRAP go through quality control. Then again, I'm great now - but if I got rich all of a sudden would I turn into a flannel wearing frog? Probably. He has my respect, he made wonderful movies. I just really disagree with some of the crap he does these days.

Lucas doesn't have an original vision and he never did. It's not a crime, it's just inconvenient for people who want differing editions of the movies. Some of us want A, some of us want D. The way Lucas works, things change pretty often. I bet you any money Luke and Leia weren't sisters in 77. That's just the way the guy works, he changes things because he's obsessive complusive and continues to think that there's ways of improving the movie. It's unfortunate but it's all too common with filmmakers and artists of all kinds. Heck, I do it sometimes. (No one complains because not many people see my movies).

Favorite OT score/music cue?
Time
The only movie music ever to give me chills was the music that plays when Luke topples Vader. And when Vader slam-dunks Palpatine.

However, in ANH my absolute favourite cue was the quiet timpani when Obi-Wan spots Vader approaching him. I was a little sad that this understated yet very moody and spooky thing wasn't reprised in ROTS. I kind of knew that would happen though.
