Info: What do you think of Lowry's work for the DVD release of the Indiana Jones Trilogy?

That's because mr. Lucas and his team screwed up the colors before sending the movies to Lowry. It appears you are correct, a bloke called Rick Dean who's a director at THX was responsible for re-timing the colour on ANH (source).

From that source:
Dean's corrected versions would be sent back to ILM in Northern California, where Lucas himself would view the footage on a DLP cinema projector, sometimes offering comments for further color adjustments.

Wether that DLP cinema projector is in need of a good color calibration, or Lucas is seriously becoming color blind...

These are muxed mpeg files with 2.0 english audio. File ending "mpg" was not allowed by the host.
Get it fast, it will probably be removed soon.

Where did you get these? The quality is awesome! Is this a LD transfer?

Also, could you please upload the original jedi ghost scene? Thanks!

EDIT: Nevermind, I've found this scene (and answers to my questions) in that other thread. Thanks for uploading these files, grisan.

Which software did you use? I was not aware that such software exists!

Star Wars OT ANH - PAL Laserdisc transfer (Released)
Time
You can see the french THX box here.

AFAIK, this is the only french THX laserdiscs with english soundtrack and text crawl of the original theatrical version of the trilogy. They have french subtitles in the bottom black bar for english and alien languages.

AFAIK, these LDs are only available in this black box with the red Star Wars logo and the Alvin art for ANH.

This box is rare and expensive!

AFAIK, two other box sets exists, an older one, black and in pyramidal shape, with only a silver french logo (La guerre des étoiles). This is the original theatrical version, but the picture quality is awful. And I don't know if a version with english soundtrack exists.

The other box set is THX, but it's the special edition. It has the mask of Darth Vader on it.

You may try to search for "coffret Star Wars" in the laserdiscs section of eBay France.

HTH.

They are indeed french pal laserdiscs. The first two (ANH & ESB) are the special editions, and the last one (ROTJ) is the original theatrical version!

Don't bid on these, I am sure you can find a better auction on eBay!

By the way, the best french Star Wars laserdiscs use the same art as the THX japan editions. You can see the japan LDs on this site: click on the green LD logo for the Widescreen - THX version of each movie.

I'm in the south of France. Why? And, no, I don't have any NTSC LDs to compare to.

its the french soundtrack version I think

Yes, it's the french version. As far as I know, the english version is only available in the box set.

Sorry, I don't have access to digitial audio in hardware. My computer doesn't have any audio in, actually. (damn Apple G4 Cube!) I plan on doing my own transfer, so I will buy the acquisition hardware, but for the moment, you know... money...

Jim Ward on SE Changes...
Time
The arrogance continues... This is an insult to all the people that have signed the petition. Why do these people have to justify themselves in every article? This article is just a mean by Apple to tell everyone how great is their PowerMac G5 at complex video tasks. You don't talk about the SE changes controversy in a technical article when only 5 people are upset about the changes!

(by the way, the article is here. The quote from Jim Ward is in the right column, on the second page.)

I can't download it myself, so does it actually look corrupt?

I doubt you've actually missed anything - the clip should end with Vader's aide talking to him as they walk down the hallway, with a caption about Kurosawa's classic "The Hidden Fortress."

There's actually 4 seconds missing at the end. All of Vader's aide dialog. And the clip look corrupt.

I've bought the french 1995 THX LDs off eBay in the past weeks. Two different releases exists: one with the french soundtrack, and a box set with the original english soundtrack and french subtitles. (I've bought both of them!)

I've bought a fairly decent player too (Pioneer CLD-D925), that I have just received this morning. So I checked the french subtilted english LDs... (drum roll) They have the english text crawl (and end credits), and the subtiltes are (always) in the bottom black bar!!! So there is an english PAL LD of the Star Wars Trilogy.

Info Wanted: What other LDs are you all transferring?
Time
Doing a transfer of Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind is a great idea! RowMan, will you use seamless branching to offer both the theatrical cut and the special edition of CE3K on your DVD? The existing DVD has a new (and better, imho) cut of this movie. Also you should consider transferring the extras of the Criterion LD too, a lot of them aren't on the commercial DVD.

Got the DVDs Today
Time
All that "and if Luke..." reminded me that I just saw a few days ago, on the Dark Horse Comics site that someone took that very concept and made a story with it. (3 stories, actually)

It's called Star Wars Infinities, and the story begins at the end of A New Hope, with Luke missing the exhaust port of the Death Star!!!

There's a similar story for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Anybody have read those? Are they any good?

Check this out

NEW ~

6 Disc Blaksvn "Making of the Trilogy" Set

But... I do not want 6 DVDs!!! As I said, I'm only interested in the four making-of documentaries. And I'm pretty sure that you can put 2 documentaries on 1 DVD, so 2 DVDs should be enough.

I already have the 4 disc Dr Gonzo anamorphic set (movies + sup. material), the 3 disc TR47 set (only the movies), I do not want my Star Wars DVD collection becoming too huge!

To TR47 and/or Rikter:
What about making a DVD set with only the four original documentaries? (The Making of Star Wars; SP-FX: Empire Strikes Back; Classic Creatures: The Making of Return of the Jedi; From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga)

I don't care much about the other material (and I already have the DVD made from the Definitive Edition bonus LD). A 2 DVD set, with 2 documentaries on each DVD, would be fine! (as a DVD-R can easily hold 2 hours of video)

The Anamorphic set has quite noticably softer picture quality.

But slightly more vibrant colors than the TR47 set... Hard to chose!

There's some "video echo" on the Anamorphic set, it seems. You'll have to watch it on a computer monitor: look for sharp straight vertical lines, you'll see them "repeated" to the right...

And for what I have seen of the new "Farsight" Anamorphic set, there is some video noise in the blacks...

I want to know if the markings on the docking bay floor were always there or are they a new addition???

Well spotted!

They were markings on the docking bay floor, but there is a new one to the right, with some stormtroopers added! I don't know if this change is from the '97 special edition (I don't have them), the 2004 DVD (I don't have them either, and I may never have them!) or if this has been changed only for the menus?

(still taken from the TR47 LD rip)
