Info: Films re-color timed on video releases

Was not the Terminator before the new BD ever recolor timed?  I mean to match the second film.  Seems to be something they do these days as they did it with the Matrix and Lord of the Rings.

Its a Cameron thing, he loves the teal look check out aliens! Plus coming soon The abyss, true lies, and terminator 2

Titanic also has the teal shift on blu-ray. (And other alterations)

But with Lord of the Rings, they actually already had the first film nicely color timed in their digital interpositive, and from what I understand that is what they used in the flashback in ROTJ of Boromir's death in FOTR.

What they did was they took that nice clean version, re-timed it all scene by scene, (gotta have been done by amateurs because there are some very weird color shifts at parts which I haven't seen the likes of in any other film, like a select hue of pink being shifted to green) changed grey into teal and made it darker, lowered the brightness to crush shadow detail, and then changed the overall RGB balance so everything was tinted green, even the brightest whites.

That just cannot have been done to match any other film, because the only one looking slightly similar in certain scenes is The Hobbit, but that film seemed much more professionally color timed.

I literally just registered here to say how much I love the color restoration that's done on this project. It actually looks like a **gasp!** cheap movie filmed in 1984! I said as much in the Bluray.com thread and, naturally, was laughed out of the page...

People over there claim the BD "finally replicates the actual colors of the film after all these DECADES of wrong transfers"...They don't seem to get that color correction isn't applied like a bad teal filter over the image like on the studio transfer.

Thank you for your support!

But you know, it's always the same on such forums. Sometimes I think it's a bit of a denial because they simply don't want to know that the blu-ray they bought is not the best it could be.

And by the way, not only is there a teal filter over the whole thing, but whites have been turned green as well.

It starts right away with the MGM logo and ends when the credit roll starts.

Look here:

At first glance, your eyes adjust and tells you the text is white.

But here's the color of that text beside a pure white:

This reminds me a lot of what was done with the Fellowship of the ring extended edition blu-ray.

Anyway keep up the good work and I'd love to see you do the same thing with the Raiders transfer!

Thanks! And actually, while I like the new Raiders transfer I did an experiment with some screenshots a while ago and I already have settings ready to convert it to the look of the WOWOW broadcast. We'll see if DJ is interested in doing this as a project in the future.

But let's keep that discussion in the Indiana Jones thread in the off-topic section.

Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast' - special project (* unfinished project *)
Time

From what I've read and seen, the 3D version of Beauty and the beast was altered a lot here and there.

First of all the color timing has been changed once again, and while overall more technically correct, I doubt it's what it originally looked like. I saw the movie in the theater way back, and while I can't remember how it looked, I think I've seen film cell scans on the web where it looked like it had the pink-ish tint of the old releases.

And second, they've changed colors for specific scenes here and there.

They also made some other alterations.

This video compares the two blu-ray releases. At 1:15 you can see the tree on the left side is blurred in the diamond edition but sharp in the 3D.

This site shows some of the other changes compared to older releases.

Not bashing your idea, but I think that the only way to really bring this film back would be to find an original print and get it scanned and restored.

Actually, I'm about 99.9% sure that more yellow / less blue is not needed. I've checked the RGB balance of many scenes and it's close to where it should be now. More yellow, even if very little, would ruin that balance. No offense of course since we appreciate suggestions!

Anyway, I reduced the pink in skin tones just slightly.

Here's a comparison between a shot from the old blu-ray vs our new version. (Borrowed the upper screenshot from caps-a-holic.com)

Here's the raw remastered blu-ray vs our version:

About pink skin tones, it seems the original had this to some extent too. However, I'm gonna try to decrease it just a little and see how it affects the scenes where that adjustment is needed the most.

But I'm very happy with the whites, actually in that last shot of Sarah they're pretty balanced. I never trust my eyes on that, and in photoshop some color samples of the whites on her shirt in that shot comes out as a close to perfect balance of RGB. The white in the background is a slight bit more red.

I also have to point out that this release has indeed been changed a lot, scene by scene actually. Some scenes are darker than originally (some even have slightly crushed blacks) while some are brighter. But overall, the whites had a green tint and it's been balanced out nicely now.

Yeah I guess it's because DJ posted more screens this time, you could see the difference much better in dark scenes where the teal shift was much more visible.

By the way, for anyone wondering what we base this color correction on, it's first of all the fact that the original teaser and two theatrical trailers all share the colors of the old blu-ray release, and second is to take in account the RGB balance of greys to get rid of any tint that shouldn't be there.

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

Just wanna add that with "no more versions of the OT or the 97 SE", DJ means after ESB and ROTJ are both finished.

As for slipcovers I'd say save your money DJ. At least for me they're not worth the extra cost since they actually serve no purpose other than looking good. And the BD cases will still look good on their own!

TECH vs. GOUT - 27313

Yeah, I know that one. It's actually one where the DVNR did a pretty good job.

But then there's weird stuff like frame 27312. There, the bottom of the jawas have been copied from the frame before it. That was one thing we had to fix for our version.

Star Wars: A New Hope [OUT ruLes 2.0] - AVCHD & BD RELEASED!
Time

Yeah, SET looks good too, but OUT is less cropped. They were from different sources, right?

Anyway, comparing those shots I can see why I think there is some misalignment in OUT. And I think it's horizontal.

Check this upscaled closeup of one of those "poles" in the background, SET on left and OUT on right:

See how the contours are sharp in SET and are like "doubled" and blurry in OUT?

And this is not criticizm by the way, I'm only trying to help!

Conan The Barbarian 1982 US Theatrical Edition & BONUS! *RELEASED*
Time

@StarThoughts: I totally agree with you about the ending scroll. And I too like both cuts of the film, but prefer the theatrical color timing.

The only thing I'd actually have against this film is that they should have let us know more about the characters. We barely get to know anything about anybody else than Conan, and a little about Subotai. Valeria's name isn't even mentioned in the film.

What do you guys think about that?
