FUEL TO THE MAC vs. PC FIRE

Even more fuel

EDIT: Just realised Simon beat me to it. Oh well, click on the link if you want to read a different article on the same subject.

I run my windows XP on the minimum appearence setting so it basically looks like Windows 98.

I'm paying £605 ($1058) a month for a nice 1 bedroom apartment with bathroom, kitchen and living room. But my landlords are a nice elderly couple who don't rip people off, so the same apartment would normally cost much more. When I tell my friends how much my rent is they are very jealous. Bear in mind that I earn about £1200 (after tax) a month, half my salary goes on rent. Abd that is before bills, and the gayest of gay taxes, the council tax (which pays for the garbage man, etc, and costs over £100 a month on top of my rent and MUST be paid by law).

But the short answer is £605 ($1058) per month.

BTW Dayv, I will be living in L.A, and I'm aware that it is more expensive than most places (and also apparently more dangerous, but I'm a born and bred Londoner and I'm pretty sure I can handle it). My wife is from North Dakota and the cost of living there is very low. Somebody from London could sell their home, take the money and move to North Dakota and live like a king.

Originally posted by: theredbaronSame thing with Australian movies in the US - The Castle, a great Australian comedy (with its comedy based entirely in how ridiculously over-Australian the main characters are), had a lot of the jokes and slang changed for American audiences. I don't know whether or not American audiences found it funny or not, but Americans that I knew who visited here had a blast watching it in its purest form. The thing with some of these movies is, if you don't get the slang, you won't get the jokes - and in the case of The Castle - the slang was the joke. Of course, you Poms wouldn't have a problem with it, and nor do we with your stuff. Australians too are familiar with most forms of Western slang, due to frequent exposure to both American and British media (although a British ex-patriat in Australia recently invited me to his "gaff" which I could only determine from the context, meant his "house"!).

I've wondered recently if they made any changes to the American version of Wolf Creek - boy did that do wonders for Australia's tourism industry - now I don't even want to trek out to central Australia!
But what I'm talking about is different - in your example, the movie was shown in one form to native australians, and another form to foreign Americans. What I am talking about is not 2 different versions for two different markets but one version that tries to cater to both markets- we get the same version the americans get, but it has been written and crafted for the american market from the offset. A British TV show made in Britain but in an American style. It's like they would rather please America than please the people in teh country it actually came from. Which is probably true, come to think of it.

Luke: You know, I think that R2 unit might have been stolen.

Uncle Owen: What makes you say that?

Luke: I came across a recording while I was cleaning him. He says he belongs to someone called Obi-Wan Kenobi. I thought he might have meant old Ben. Do you know what he's talking about? I wonder if he's related to Ben.

Uncle Owen: That old man's just a crazy old wizard. Tomorrow I want you to take that R2 unit into Anchorhead and have it's memory erased. That'll be the end of it. It belongs to us now.

Luke: But what if this Obi-Wan comes looking for him?

Uncle Owen: He won't, I don't think he exists any more. He died about the
same time as your father.

Luke: He knew my father?

Uncle Owen: I told you to forget it. Your only concern is to prepare the new droids for tomorrow. In the morning I want them on the south ridge working out those condensers.

Luke: I think those new droids are going to work out fine. In fact, I was thinking about our agreement about my staying
on another season, And if these new droids do work out, I want to transmit my application to the Academy this year.

Uncle Owen: You mean the next semester before harvest?

Luke: Sure, there's more than enough droids.

Uncle Owen: Harvest is when I need you the most. Only one more season. This year we'll make enough on the harvest so I'll be able to hire some more hands. And then you can go to the Academy next year. You must understand I need you here, Luke.

Luke: But it's a whole other year.

Uncle Owen: It's only one more season.

Luke: That's what you said last year.

Aunt Beru: Where are you going?

Luke: Looks like I'm going nowhere.

Aunt Beru: He can't stay here forever Owen. Most of his friends have gone. It means so much to him.

Uncle Owen: I'll make it up to him next year. I promise.

Aunt Beru: Luke's just not a farmer, Owen. He has too much of his father in him.

Uncle Owen: That's what I'm afraid of.

Everything is cheaper in America.

To be fair, the pound is much stronger than the dollar, so to do a straight pound to dollar conversion doesn't really tell the whole story, but I know for a fact that wages compared to the cost of things is much better in America. Like I said, we in England get ripped off badly. And like I also said, a lot of it is tax.

I'm looking forward to living in America. I have a few thousand pounds saved which will basically double when I change it to dollars.
