Original Trilogy Novelizations
Time
It's when they take elements of the old movies, usually mistakes or inconsistencies, and try to weave them into canon. For example, they puposely showed Jango Fett bumping his head in AOTC as a way of explaining the stormtrooper who bumps his head in ANH - according to Lucasfilm, Jango's clumsiness was passed on to his clones, which explains the stormtrooper bumping his head in ANH. Totally lame. I think it's short for 'retrospective continuity', as in retrospectively trying to fit something into the continuity even though it wasn't originally part of it, but that's just a guess.

If I'm wrong here, feel free to correct me.

Modern Myths?
Time
Yes. Star Wars is a great example of this. The Original Star Wars trilogy was full of myth, magic and wonder, and has become almost a legend in it's own right in a mere 30 years. Remember that scene in Reign of Fire where they are acting out the ESB Luke and Vader duel - I don't think that's too far from the truth.

Yeah, I know the duck's on Databank, but I don't really care for canon or any of that retcon crap. In my mind it's a mistake by the script writers of TPM and Alan Dean Foster (although I don't blame Foster because he was writing in like 1975 or 1976 and had no idea really). Making the duck canon is a kinda cool in-joke, but nothing more. Believe what you want though - if you think there are ducks in the star wars galaxy, cool. There's a 50s diner, so why not a duck?

On the whole, it's a very enjoyable film. Not earth-shattering (at least, not to me, because I've studied these plot points and lost gospels academically for far longer than Dan Brown has been writing), but certainly not worthy of the bile the press has spewed its way. Casting was excellent, Direction was sharp, and the writing was above-par for Akiva, whose dreck I usually cannot stand in the least. No Oscar material here, but worth the price of a ticket nonetheless.
Exactly.

The Empire Strikes Back Script Game
Time
Seeing as I started the ANH thread but had ESB stolen from me, I think it's only fair that I get the final scene in Empire:

Lando: Luke, we're ready for takeoff.

Luke: Good luck, Lando

Lando: When we find Jabba the Hut and that bounty hunter, we'll contact you.

Luke: I'll meet you at the rendezvous point on Tatooine.

Lando: Princess, we'll find Han. I promise.

Luke: Chewie, I'll be waiting for your signal.

Chewie: Rarrghhh

Luke: Take care, you two. May the Force be with you.

George didn't actually write it, Alan Dean Foster did. And it can't really be taken as gospel - it's very 'earthy': lots of talk of ducks and other non-star-warsy stuff.

I also seem to remember that according to the ROTJ novelization, Owen is Obi-Wan's brother, and the Ewoks are a bit less gay.

I'd prefer Luke die of natural causes. So few characters in this series do. Luke's had enough hardships in his life that he deserves a peaceful end.
Yeah, I reckon Luke would die Yoda style - 'forever sleep'.

Wasn't there some comic set like a million years after ANH in which some dude finds 3PO's head in a cave and 3PO tells him all about Luke's life? Did that say how he died?

This release is so unccol that I wouldn't even be upset if he did.

I'm reading these comments laughin at you clowns. You guys are a joke. The story is fine the way it is stop gettin all crazy with these half assed stories. These are movies to visually entertain people. Save all that crazy stuff for the books man. A lot of movies don't follow the books because they drag to much
and take to long to get to the point. The prequels are fine. Yeah they are not perfectly tying everything to the OT but they are good. All of you are complaining about the prequels but I bet you went to the movies to see all three of them (that is called supporting). They are already made so suck it up and move on. Keep Trollin' Trollin' Trollin'

What's wrong with a few geeks stretching their imaginations, huh?

Looks like I spoke to soon. Apology accepted. But you like the prequels and have a problem with episode 4? And you call us crazy?

Kind of sad how people are ready to accept whatever Lucas throws at them in the hopes that he'll bless us with a copy of the holy trilogy that finally meets industry standards.

Count me out.
You said it man.

Not unlike oversaturating colors or too much edge enhancement on certain DVDs. Your analogy generally works -- CD is capable of a better approximation of the original sound than is vinyl, just as anamorphic DVD is a better approximation of a film than is VHS or LD -- but it fails when many (most?) modern CDs are taken into account.
I see what you mean, but, ignoring the fact that many artists choose to 'tweak' their music for it's CD release, the analogy still holds. The studio tapes are the original sound, or, if you want to get even closer to the 'original sound' the noise you would have heard if you were standing in the room during the recording is the original sound. Vinyl is merely a medium for getting that sound to the ears of listeners, and when CD came along and rose the bar for the quality of the sound that could be given to listeners, it made sense to 'redeliver' that sound using this new improved method. Today's DVDs are capable of delivering movies with clearer picture and sound than VHS or Laserdisc, and Lucas should deliver Star Wars in the best way he can. That doesn't mean he has to alter the movies, repaint lighsabers, remove garbage mattes, mess around with the colour balance or any of that stuff. He just has to take whatever masters he has, be it the original negs or a later print, and present it on DVD as best he can. And that is all we are asking.

You know, I'm not sure there is an age limit. In England you can smoke at 16 so if there were a limit on bongs (or hookas) , I guess it would be 16 too. But some people buy bongs just as ornaments, so why should they have to wait till they hit a certain age?

But if you want one to use (with Tobacco of course), rather than just to look pretty, you could just make one from a soda bottle.

Yes I understand now what you are getting at and I agree. But I also feel that if he's gonna release it on DVD to stop us whining he may as well do it properly. I don't want it cleaned up or fixed in any way - I just want the best possib;le transfer he and his colleagues are capable of. This is Star Wars for god's sake - treat it with some respect.

I personally am not that bothered about the anamorphic debate - I just want Star Wars preserved on DVD so I can watch it over and over without worrying about my VHS degrading and snapping, but the fact that he seems to be pulling this shit on purpose to rub shit in our faces irritated me enough to write to the guy. He's clearly insane.

When bands release their old albums on CD, they don't sound all crackly and shit like a vinyl, they sound like a CD. And that's because the original recording, the band's original performance, sounded that way, and the crappy medium of vinyl altered that sound to something less than it was. By cleaning up the masters and laying them onto a CD, we get a better, clearer sound. It's the same in this case - 35mm is incredibly clear and beautiful to watch - and DVD can go some way towards replicating that (further than VHS or Laserdisc anyway). The technology exists to allow us to watch one of the greatest, most seminal movies of all time in a good, clear way, so why not let us? It's just spiteful and sad.
