May I take this opportunity to worship at the feet of all Americans for saving my puny Island from certain destruction. We held out from 1939 until 1944 without them, but that one year that they helped us was, of course, the decider. Thank You Thank you Thank you.

Make Poverty History
Time
Guys, I know that some of you out there actually give a shit about the world we live in, so please please please go to www.makepovertyhistory.org and click on the button which says 'JOIN US'

Every 3 seconds a child dies because they happen to be born poor.

If we changed 3 things - trade, aid and debt - that scandal would stop. And on 8th July, if the 8 men sitting round the table at the G8 summit think enough people want them to - they can actually do it. Stop the deaths.

But to make that happen we need you to get 3 people you know to go to www.makepovertyhistory.org and click on the button which says 'JOIN US'. This is serious now - time is running out - we've got 8 weeks. So please....

Do it now, email them, text them, call them, camp on their front lawn - whatever it takes - but I need you to find 3 people who, like you, want to stop this casual daily holocaust.

There are 56 days before the G8 leaders meet - this is our chance... this is the moment when we can become the generation that refuses to live in a world where 30,000 children are dying unneccessarily every single day.

We CAN make poverty history. But we need EVERYONE to get involved. It's time to really go to work on this. Please recruit those 3 people, right now.

If everyone who gets this message sends it on to 3 friends, half a million people will join us this week - that's one hell of a message to give out to our politicians.

Thanks.

p.s Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that generation - Nelson Mandela.

John Paul II? Most influential? more than Lenin? More than Churchill? More than Hitler? And 2 U.S presidents on the list? Jedisage, I know you and I often don't see eye to eye on political and global matters, but come on. I'm not saying I have any better suggestions, this is a very tough choice, but your list I don't think cuts it.
I know the guy just died, but how was the pope so influential? Sure, he touched a lot of people, but he didn't have any major effect on the history of the planet, unlike Hitler. It was a bad effect, but an effect all the same, and a big one. In the same way I think you could say Bin Laden makes the list - he has influenced and reshaped our world for years to come, although that happened in 2001 so I guess he missed his chance by a year or so.
I personally think John Lennon was pretty influential. He changed popular music and art and opened up politics etc to lots of people who would otherwise not have been interested. And what about Gandhi?

Samuel L. Jackson & Laurence Fishburne

As far as I know, SLJ's casting in the prequels was down to an interview he gave on a british TV show called TFI Friday (thank fuck it's friday) which aired every friday night in the mid nineties. It was probably the biggest chat show of the time, and pretty much summed up nineties britain. Anyway, Samuel L was on the show and he said he was asked what his dream role was and he said he'd kill to be in the new star wars movies "I'll do anything, I'll play Luke Skywalker's slave if I have to" and the rest is history.

Labour lost loads of seats. Loads. I think Blair will step down at some point. Although personally I think that the more equal share of seats is a good thing, meaning more broad discussion and consideration of issues. Also I think that Blair has seen that some people are disillusioned with him and he can learn from that. He's in his 3rd term so he has the experienc and now he sees where he needs to improve.

Shit dude, that's harsh, although at 45mph you are lucky to be alive. Hope you feel better real soon, and the fact that you are looking at this from such a good angle and thinking about the possibilities of what had happened if the mother and child were hit instead, et, shows that you deserve to still be around.

I've not seen Superman 2 or 3, actually. And when did I ever say the trilogies had to be classic? I'll add Alien Trilogy to the list when I get home. I gotta go. The bell is about to ring.

If you don't have quality control and the only rule is that there are 3 movies before you know it we'll have the American pie trilogy on the list.

Maybe he could be all of them. Indiana Jones wakes up in 2099 to find that he is in fact a bionacally enhanced alien clone of the original Jones, and all the adventures we have watched over the years do not exist because he was just plugged into a VR machine all along.

Jedisage, I must admit I can see your point (although did you know that Britain, which is a significantly smaller country, gave more aid to the Tsunami cause than America? Just saying. Also, the amount the US gave to the Tsunami cause paled in comparison to the billions spent on the war. Again, just saying) but I don't think that England is one of the countries you were refering to in terms of bugging America for help, and I do see what you mean. Anyway, the whole reason of this thread was really just to find out if the American public were aware that Tony Blair, who by all accounts is quite a popular man stateside, was facing an election. My point was that the British government mattered to the American media and the American people when we were offering our support and soldiers but a few years down the line and the interest has waned because it no longer matters to you. Did you know that on May 1st, the anniversary of the so called 'end of the war' the 87th british serviceman was killed in action? Of course you didn't. Incidentally, Tony Blair won the election but with a much reduced majority.

Yeah, they're Liberal and Democratic. Hey, Chaltab, as an American teenager I'm interested to know if you are taught or exposed to any current affairs happening outside of America (this election, for example). I'd like to know the truth about how America observes the rest of the world.

Chaltab, you spelt uneducated wrong, which is slightly ironic. Jeten, as a 13 year old, which makes you what, 7 or 8 when the phantom menace came out, what do you think of the OT compared to the prequels? Did the prequels have a similar effect on you as a youngster that the OT had on us? By the way, in answer to the original question, I've seen each of the OT at least 50 times plus, probably more because I had it on video as a kid and watched it repeatedly then slowed down on the viewings until I was about 14 or so and rediscovered it. I've seen the prequels once each in the cinema and that's it.

As for the trilogy fest, there's some trilogies listed that are far from classic. I would omit:

The Matrix Trilogy - most people agree that as 3 movies this was a let down. It's a great first movie but not a great trilogy
Blade Trilogy - not bad fun movies but hardly classic
X-Men Trilogy - same goes for these
Trilogy of Non Crappy Superman films - there's only 2 non-crappy superman films
Spiderman Trilogy - and these - a great trilogy is a set of 3 films that work perfectly, individually and collectively. You can't just stick any old set of 3 on the list.

Which leaves:

Star Wars Trilogy (Unaltered Theatrical Release)
Back to the Future Trilogy
Godfather Trilogy (3's a little week but not terrible)
Lord of the Rings (Extended Edition Trilogy)
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Terminator Trilogy (could do without 3, but at least it tries to be part of the bigger story, and the excellence of T2 means that this has to be on the list)

And I would add:

Alien Trilogy - Alien 3 is a good movie, despite what people say, and it brings the trilogy to a nice conclusion (Ripley's death) the first and 2nd films are great. Alien 4 and Aliens/Predator don't exist.

Traditionally Labour were the 'people's party' and fairly socialist in their ideals while the conservatives were right wing traditionalist, but today they are both more or less middle ground, although the conservatives are still much more right wing on policies such as immigration, etc. My view of Blair is that he is a basically a good man with good intentions who has tried to do the right thing in the past, but I see him as a bit smug and also a bit irritating. I am voting for Liberal Democrats, generally regarded as the 3rd choice party, but in my opinion they are the onlt real alternative because the other 2 parties are so similar. It's the same old story of smiling, lying politicians. Blair will win and I am ok with that. It could be worse.

Unfortunately they didn't, which disapointed me, although the doctor did look in a mirror and comment on his new body. But I hear that when the actor changes in the next series there will be a regeneration scene.

Today is the UK general election. I am british and was just interested to know if anybody in America (or anywhere else for that matter) was aware of today's significance or even cared, considering the support England gave for the Iraq war and the fact that lots of Americans seem to like Tony Blair, do they even realise that he might not be Prime Minister tomorrow? Is the UK Election getting any media coverage in the states? Do American have the slightest bit of interest in something happening outside of the USA? Just wondering...
