Batman Begins
Time
I saw Batman Begins last night so I can Finally comment. Bale was a great Bruce, and I liked watching the birth of the batsuit and the batcave, etc. But there was something I didn't like. Not sure what, but I think I prefer the 1989 Burton version. Two things I can definitely say I didn't liekd about 'Begins' was the editing - there were lots of shots and scenes that felt like they should have gone on for a few frames (or even a few seconds) more. and I also didn't like the close up fighting. While it did add to the feeling that the criminals didn't know what the hell was hitting them as Bats got to work on them, I like to be able to see the fight moves.
All in all, I enjoyed it, it was by no means terrible, but I was a little dissapointed. However, thje 3 guys I went with all loved it, so maybe it's just me (I studied film at art college, a degree in animation at uni, and worked for a a London special effects company when I graduated, so I guess I am unable to just watch a film like an average moviegoer anymore....DAMN!).

Warbler, you said above that when you think of terror attacks you think of Bin Laden - that is because his face and name is in every bloody newspaper and TV bulletin related to terrorists. He's a villain for the people to focus on. It's turning this whole thing into an over-simplified bad guy movie. And even you, who is clearly smart and aware that Bin Laden is not the be all and end all of this thing, still can't quite shake the concept even though you know it to be false, because it's thrown at you every day. A testiment to the power of the media.

After the disappointing T3 they shouldn't make anymore. I was convinced that they made T3 for the money and the Terminator series was made by James Cameron and only James Cameron. Jonathon Mostow (whatever) screwed up on the Terminator Franchise and Arnie is just way too old for the part (I still loved those jokes "The Pensionator" lol) . Better leave the franchise alone than rather worsen it with more movie..

I recently read an interview with Nick Stahl in which he stated that he will not be in T4 because it is set much later than T3 and the character of John Connor will be much older.

I've only seen chunks of T1 and T2, but T3 was pretty good. It won't knock your socks off but it's worth a rental.

In that case Chaltab, I highly, highly recommend you watch T1 and 2. If you liked T3, you are in for a treat.

Sort of on-topic:
one of my co-workers just told me that in the 80s his older brother had a letter published in Return of the Jedi magazine. He asked when the next Star Wars movie was coming out and what it was called and the answer, from none other then C3PO himself was that 'George is currently writing the next set of films and the next one will be called The Clone Wars and will be out in a few years' and 'I hope you enjoy it'.

As for the snake reflection in ROTLA, I don't mind that because it is actually a fix of an error, whereas the Star Wars changes alter the story. I'm sure we would have all been reasonably happy if the Special Editions were just nicer looking versions of the same film.

***The "Darth Editous" Episode IV DVD Info and Feedback Thread*** - a partially "de-specialed" DVD

I don't think there will be any changes to episodes 4-6 in November. I think a 6 part boxset will come out eventually, with all new changes to all 6 films in an attempt to make the saga work as one 12 hour movie, but any release of the OT in November to coincide with Ep3 will be the same versions already available.
Any more thoughts on the Emperor's phone call in ESB?

Yeah, the new ESB Emperor is crap, and I'm not just saying it because I'm a traditioanlist or anything like that, it just looks lame. I also think the new hologram is too clear and modern looking. Any way of merging a shot of the Emperor from ROTJ with the mouth of the new one and then editing it so the dialogue is as close to the original as possible?
Difficult and complicated I'm sure and, while I know I could do a good job of it on a single frame in photoshop, I don't know how feasible it is with a moving image.
Or maybe just paint the hood to cover his eyes like it does in Jedi? That could work and would probably be easier. And cover the turtle-like neck with shadow.
I would rather see this fixed properly than some window in cloud city.

A bit harsh don't you think and I think his voice and his lips should be edited. Also I'm not too sure to actually put in the "Emperor's throne room" music in the conversation which was an idea that I thought of.

Kev, I know you're an Ian McD fan, but the new ESB Emperor, and for the most part teh ROTS Emperor is just no good - ROTJ Emperor is fantastic, but he's just not the same in these new ones.

Amen.

But, then again, I've been of the opinion that anything beyond the original Terminator has been a bad idea. I disliked T2 (save for the badass acting job by Robert Patrick). I hated T3. If they had stuck with just the original movie, then none of these time travel "cock ups" would have occurred.

Yeah, Robert Patrick was great. They could have easily just gotten another big muscly Arnie type to play the T-1000 but he really put his mark on that role. I also though he was excellent as Doggett in the X-Files when Mulder went missing. As a die hard X-files fan since the first episode, I wasn't too sure about giving Scully a new partner, but he really won me over.
Best not to start talking about X-Files in the Terminator thread though - Kev will get mad.

Kev, you just love setting people straight when they have gone off-topic don't you?
Anyway, here is a summary of my previous posts from the thread deemed the wrong place to discuss T4 by Kev:

I said that T4 is a bad idea, although if they tell the story of John Connor leading the humans against the machines, it will be both a sequel to T3 and a prequel to the original.

Shimraa then said that was wrong because the war that started at the end of T3 was not the same war mentioned in T1 and T2.

I then said that if that is the case, then we have a paradox on our hands because if the original war from T1 and T2 never happened, and Arnie never went back to 1984 to kill sarah connor, meaning that Kyle never went back to save her, meaning that Sarah and Kyle never got it one, meaning John was never born....

I hate it when Hollywood does time travel and cocks it up.

There was also some mention in the othe rthread that Arnie would not be in T4!!! That simply cannot happen. Either get Arnie on board or (my preferred choice) don't make T4.

I mean, who can replace Arnie? The F**cking Rock?

Conclusion: T4=Bad

Well if that's the case then we have one massive paradox becuase if Kyle's war never happened, Arnie would not have travelled to 1984 to kill Sarah connor, and John connor would never be born. I hate when hollywood tries to do time travel and cocks it up. They should have just stopped at T2. By the way Warb, I give up, what otehr sci-fi series has done this?

Something very rare is happening here - a civil, balanced and constructive discussion of the terrorist situation with people eloquently expressing both sides of the argument.

Would everyone stop going on about Bin Laden? You're talking as if getting rid of him would solve the problem. I doubt the London bombers are even connected to Bin Laden. He is just a famous name - these extremists are now taking his example and doing their own thing, just like modern day Nazis weren't even born when Hitler was around. This thing has become a cancer that has spread beyond the root cause. There is no leader, no one man to take out. The only thing that would happen if Bin Laden was caught or killed would be even more attacks to avenge him.

I'm not saying i believe it, but it is an interestin rumor

This actually sounds highly believable IMO.

So, now for the news update from your man in the field - me. Yesterday the police cordoned off a road to inverstigate an abandoned car that they believe was used by one of the would-be bombers in thursady's failed attacks. The car was literally 2 minutes from my flat! Talk about close to home!

Although if they follow on from Terminator 3 and show John Connor leading the humans in a war against the machines, it will be both a sequel to T3 and a prequel to the original, which is kind of a cool concept and in theory you could watch all 4 films on a continuos loop... But still:

Atlantis
Time
OK Shim, you asked for it...
There's quite a convincing argument that Atlantis was actually a place called Theda (A.K.A Santorini), which can still be seen today below the water. It was part of the Minoan civilisation and it was destroyed by a volcano. The Egyptians knew of Theda and this is who Plato got his story from. According to the Egyptians, Theda, or Keftiu as they called it, was home to a highly advanced civilisation with technology and medicine far ahead of it's time, and was also home to one of 4 pillars holding up the sky. This was lost in the translation and Plato understood it as the land of the titan Atlas, who held up the sky, hence Atlantis, which means Island of Atlas. The Egyptians said that Kieftu (or Atlantis) was in the west. Plato assumed this meant the Atlantic ocean (the ocean of Atlas: makes sense), which is west of Greece (Plato's home), but if we are saying that Theda is in fact Atlantis, it lies to the west of EGYPT, but not greece. The Minoans of Theda engaged in ritualistic bullfighting, as did Plato's Atlanteans, and there are many other similarities between Plato's descriptian and the actual Minoans - Very little evidence of war or weapons has been found in the Minoan ruins, which suggests that they were peaceful, Minoans were known to deal in Ivory and bought many exotic creatures from distant lands to their island, including elephants which, according to the Egyptians, were a feature of Kieftu. Plato described Atlantis as alternating rings of sea and land - the remnants of post eruptian Theda are circular around a deep, wide lagoon with another smaller island located in the center, Plato speaks of white, blaclk and red stones quarried from under Atlantis - The cliffs of Theda are a mix of white, black and red stone. Archaeologists have even found an extensive and sophisticated system of sewers, drains, drinking and bath water pipes in Theda. Private homes had flushing toilets.

So, it seems likely that Atlantis was a lot closer to home than Plato suspected but he got carried away in amazing stories of amazing civilisations (which, you have to admit, is much more exciting - it's one of those mysteries that is so built up, the truth will never satisfy - I for one hope that I am wrong and there is indeed a lost civilisation out there somewhere. How cool would it be if they had all kinds of modern machines and medicine and stargates?)
