'Merge' Article- Lucas in his own words
Time
“It's the one thing that I don't want to do. It's strange: I don't think that I'm very good at it but I can do it better than most people.”
HahhaHAHahHAHhahHAHhahhahHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

OK, now I’ve got that off my chest….

I think he means that Anakin's story is the central theme, and that Luke is part of that story. Lucas sees Luke as merely a step in redeeming his father. I really don't think he thinks the OT is about Luke, that would be silly to pretend, as it's not.

Hold on a second. The film's title was officially changed on the opening crawl in 1981. PLUS, ESB and ROTJ were only advertised with their subtitles, they ALWAYS had their episode number in the opening crawl.
Originally posted by: Adamwankenobi
Why were they called that, anyway? Didn't people ever reallize that they were episodes of a series, even if they were 4, 5, and 6? I mean, why in the hell did people once refer to Episode IV as simply "Star Wars?" And then people called the next two by their subtitles. Huh?

OK, I’m gonna try and talk real slow so maybe you finally understand. Stop me if I’m going too fast. Ok, here we go – The original idea for Star Wars was to make a space opera similar to the ones Lucas grew up with and loved as a kid. In order to give the viewer the feeling that they were watching a space opera and had been thrown right into the middle of a story of galcatic war, George decided it would be cool to call the film episode 4, of an imaginery serial. When George was a kid he would go to the cinema on a Saturday morning and watch whatever happened to be showing, and he wanted the viewer to feel like that when watching Star Wars. That is the one and only original reason for the ‘Episode 4’ subtitle. The problem is, when George told the studio he wanted to call it episode 4, they were like ‘episode 4? But this is the first movie!!’ They just didn’t get it, and they feared the viewer wouldn’t get it either, so they prevented him from doing it. A few years later George is rich and powerful, and still thinks it will be cool to add the episode 4 subtitle, so he does it. People then start asking questions about episodes 1-3, and George thinks it might be neat if one day he actually made these missing episodes. So basically, the episode 4 thing was just a novelty, a throwback to the old serials, but the idea gradually developed into the 6 part saga we have today. That IS how it happened, whatever bullshit we are getting fed these days about a grand vision. Adam, I would have thought that you of all people wpuld have come across this explanation at some point. You seem to love searching out facts and watching documentaries and makings of and stuff, and this explanation appears in so many places. In one documentary they even show a title crawl from an old black and white sci-fi serial that is pretty much exactly the same as the star wars crawl, complete with episode number, and shows what George was shooting for.

Yeah, that makes sense. But, now, with all six finished, I can't believe that there STILL are people who don't call them by their episode titles. It is no longer a "serial referencial joke." It actually is a six-part serial now.
You make it sound like all six were planned from the start, and now the grand task is complete. Are you listening to anything we’re saying???? Read this post again:

At least you guys understand that Lucas has changed him mind of 28 years, because alot of newer fans think this was always his vision. Now I dont' have a problem if Lucas only wants to do 6 episodes now, I even don't blame him, I mean who wants to do SW for the rest of their life? But don't keep lying and saying everyone is lying, except himself. Just say, "you know what it was always about Luke, and in 1980, I had the hunger to do maybe 12, 9 episodes, cause I saw this huge galaxy out there, but I had to raise my kids, and I got older, and to be honest I just have the hunger to do SW for the next 20 years, so I paired it down to six movies, and just gave a backstory to the OT, focusing around Vader/Kenobi and Luke & Leis Mom, and if you want to watch it 1-6, it may work, but since it was filmed 4-6,1-3, it will probably work better that way. People change, I may have said alot of things that contradict now, but I have changed too."

I would be fine with that, cause it is at least honest, now gives us the damn O-OT on DVD, so we don't have to read any of this crap about you hoping in one sentence you're gonna say you're releasing the originals!

Really? He did that? That's so cool...
It is cool, but why did they do it? Just for fun?

Sorry about my last post - I'm not trying to incite anything, and the edit function doesn't work in this thread for some reason. But Gaffer's right, the spamming isn't such a problem anymore (although it could be again if some new user came along and decided he wanted to reach Jedi Knight status in a week or whatever). I personally don't mind either way if we keep or lose the post count.

Translation - Adam isn't quite the dick he used to be.

So, what would happen if he did release the OOT on DVD?
Time
It must be an American thing because here in England, much to my delight, it's pretty damn hard to find a full screen DVD so I never have to worry about it, but when my American Mother-In-Law sends me DVDs, it can get messy. Last year for my birthday she sent me the Last Samurai, which is a movie I really dig and would have bought myself, but she got me the full screen version and now I'm stuck with it (although I intend to replace it one day when the wife isn't looking). This year, she sent me the Aviator, but it was widescreen so all is well.

Emperors Head Slugs????
Time
They were always there. I always thought it was something to do with the colour they superimposed over the emperor's eyes to give them that glow overlapping onto the cloak hood. As for improving the make-up for ROTS - bullshit. The make-up in ROTS is terrible. Looks like a rubber mask you buy in Toys 'R' Us. But let's not get into that. Didn't they try and work them into the continuity buy saying they were parasitic slugs that fed on the dark side energy and lived on the Emperor's face? Or was that just a joke? It's hard to tell these days, I'm not sure if stuff like that is meant to be a joke or not anymore. I'm surprised they haven't treid to say the garbage Mattes on the TIEs are deflector shields (which is actually pretty feasible)

Exactly - it's a sort of catch-22 scenario.

However, if like teh Knight you have sworn to protect the grail, devoting your life to the task, then eternal life within the room that houses the grail would come in quite useful. Beyond that though, no point. Perhaps the only reason the grail grants eternal life to someone who drinks from it is as a sort of defense mechanism to ensure that the person chosen to defend it is always around to do so. Of course, if the power of the grail is useless beyond a certain point, then I guess there is no real need to defend it in the first place....Even if the Nazis did get hold of it, beyond the seal it's nothing more than a cup.

Anyway, if Indy's eternal life ceased to be once he passed the seal, what about Henry's wound| Shouldn't it have reopened causing him to die?

A Future For Futurama?

Yeah, I never thought I'd say it, but Simpsons isn't so great anymore.

Someone please explain why there is a 50's diner in the Star Wars universe...

The cantina music isn't 70s style music, it's kinda wierd alien music, and I'm pretty sure it was composed to sound alien. But the fifties diner is totally gay man - it's so Earthly and non-sci-fi. It just doesn't fit. How can you defend this Shim? Is your name Adam? The reason I hate this scene is because Georgie porgy lucas was thinking 'oh won't it be so cool to have a fifties diner homage to one of my old films, the fans will love it and we can make a dex action figure cos he's so cool and everyone's gonna love dex' but really it was just a bad idea that should have gone no further than being a fleeting thought in Lucas' insane brain.

As for Clone Wars, I agree that the story telling was better, but not neccesarily the story itself. The prequels as a whole, including all the spin off cartoons and whatever, just don't tell a very good story, and they tell this not so good story quite badly. As films themselves, they're not so bad, and compared to a lot of movies, I suppose they're pretty good, but as an exercise in making prequels to existing films, adding to and developing an existing story, they fail, IN MY PERSONAL OPINION.

Um....That's pretty much how the original "Kong" was too.

And it's still one of the greatest movies of all time.

So I guess we didn't need a remake then...
Anyway, forget Kong (I sure have - it wasn't hard). I finally bit the bullet last night and went to see the Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and it was actually pretty good, and not the LOTR rip off to sell toys and happy meals I thought it was based on the trailer, so I take back all my previous Narnia movie slamming. I'm not saying it was the best movie I've ever seen or anything, but it was fairly faithful to my memories of the book. It was especially cool when they were in Beaver's house and he's telling them that they are the ones the prophecy speaks of and Susan says 'we're not heroes - we're from Finchley', because I live in Finchley and was watching the film in Finchley. For me that was pretty cool.
