Scientific Innacuracies in Sci-Fi

Like in Star Trek. When Roe Laren and Geordi LaForge get phased and everyone thinks they are dead, why don't they fall through the floor of the ship? How do they breath if they can't even manipulate air enough to make themselves heard?

I don't know about phased crew members, but I have a theory that ghosts can only walk through walls if there was a door or opening in the wall during their lifetime. For example, London was built by the Romans and there have been many sightings of the ghosts of Roman soldiers etc in the city. These ghosts are often missing their lower legs, because they are walking on THEIR streets, which were below the level of our current streets. This would explain why ghosts, and I assume Geordi and Roe, do not need to worry about falling through the floor.

^Genius.

We all seem to be focussing on personal post counts, but, being the team player that I so clearly am, I find myself asking 'what about the group effort?'. It's only a matter of time before this thread passes the 300 pages mark - GO TEAM!

This one's for ADigitalMan.

1941: Dick Cheney was born on January 30th. Apparently the entire year lived in infamy.

Another bad thing that happened in 1941 was the Japanese surprise attack on the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor which bought the U.S. into World War II. Seeing their homies were in trouble, Britain also declared war on Japan.

Did you know that in March 1941, Congress passed the Lend-Lease Act, providing aid to Allied forces, and Hormel shifted into wartime production? Soon SPAM Luncheon Meat was traveling to Britain and Russia to help meet quotas of 15 million cans a week. The "meat of many uses" soon achieved notoriety among the military as "the ham that didn't pass its physical" and a "meatball without basic training."

I think it's fair to say that without SPAM, we'd all be talking German today.

1937: SPAM is born! The first can of SPAM rolls off the production line. Originally called HORMEL Spiced Ham, the company holds a contest to create a name as distinctive as the taste. By combining the ‘sp’ from spiced and the ‘am’ from ham, the winner comes up with ‘SPAM'. Top prize: $100, and ultimate respect from me for sheer genius.

Later, in the 1990s, the word SPAM will become synonymous with internet junk mail and forum junk posting. And on that rather fitting note, I believe I will cease with today’s history lesson.

The following year, 1926, Baird gave the world's first public demonstration of a working television system to members of the Royal Institution and a newspaper reporter on January 26 at his laboratory in London. Unlike later electronic systems with several hundred lines of resolution, Baird's vertically scanned image, using a scanning disk embedded with a double spiral of lenses, had only 30 lines, just enough to reproduce a recognizable human face.

Knowledge is power my friend. For example, imagine the power you can command with these snippets of knowledge:

1925: Adolf Hitler publishes Volume I of Mein Kampf

On March 25, 1925, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird gave a demonstration of televised silhouette images at Selfridge's Department Store in London. But if television is defined as the transmission of live, moving, half-tone (grayscale) images, and not silhouette or still images, Baird achieved this privately on October 2, 1925.

Nice job man. I especially like how you ripped off my layout

Then again, I ripped it off someone else, so whatever.

Then again, maybe my designs were just so unoriginal and unimaginative that you didn't rip me off at all.

Maybe I ripped you off?

My version: Jedi's are wise, spiritual, enlightened dudes. When they die, they become 'one with the force', they transcend the physical and progress to a higher level of existence.

George's version: something about Qui-Gon teaching Yoda who taught obi-wan and somehow Anakin figured it out and when he died he became one with the force, but it wasn't his old self it was his young self because that's how he was before he turned to the darkside. Or something. For more info, read a whole load of EU novels.
