Info: STAR WARS Trilogy 1997 SE DTS Discs (on ebay)

Yikes! Did prices on DTS theater discs just go up, or is this seller overestimating their value? I paid a mere pittance many years ago for the ones I have in my collection.

“Hey look - it says ‘Star Wars’ on it. You should sell that on eBay - it must be worth a fortune. Those collectors are nuts, they’ll pay any amount of money for something with Star Wars on it.”

Like this SE Trailer C for $400

Info: 'Dr. No' - Rare Uncut Version 1st Beta/VHS release 1982
Time

I just bought the LOT of 6 with the '82 Betamax tape in it and I’m having it shipped to somebody who can capture it for me. I seriously doubt it has any extended/uncensored scenes in it, but that’s okay too. It’s a win-win for me, as either way I get to write an article for my Bond site: Either I’ll have some extended/deleted scenes to share, or I can debunk the myth. I might as well grab an '82 CED as well and check that out while I’m at it.

Regarding the 35mm IB tech print you scanned… did the UA logo at the start fade to black, or did it cut to the opening gunbarrel sequence like the Bond films of the ‘70s?

This UA logo:

fades to black. Then this fades in:

The, letters vanish (probably they fade out, but there are frames missing, so it’s hard to tell) and the white circle is left to begin the gunbarrel sequence:

Also, somebody on this forum bought one of these '82 tapes and says it is censored the same as the rest, despite what is claimed in the MI6 thread:

http://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6662

Perhaps it is just a rumor started by somebody who wanted to jack up the price of his old VHS tape on eBay 😉

I’d still like to see the tape though, if only to debunk the rumour once and for all, so my offer to buy that lot still stands. (I believe the fact that the Dr No tape has a 20th Century Fox label, rather than a CBS/Fox label proves it is an '82 tape and not an '84)

According to this page:

http://melonfarmers.co.uk/hitscr.htm

“The cuts were presumably to the negative as was often the norm in the 60s, so cuts now persist to all prints worldwide.”

If that is true, then it is very unlikely that any of the 1980s video transfers would have this censored material.

I briefly owned and scanned an original 1962 35mm IB Tech print of Dr. No, and just took a look at it now: the cuts are exactly as described:

  • No blows to the chauffeur when he is unable to defend himself. No knee kick.
  • Bond shoots only once into Dent’s back as he lies on the floor dying.
  • Dr. No’s line is “I’m sure the guards will amuse her”
  • Dr. No’s henchmen beating up Bond as he is sat at the table has been trimmed, introducing a dissolve to the next scene to cover the removal of violent footage.

I grabbed the 1.0 version off spleen a while back and watched it. I also wanted to congratulate you all on your 1st pass release. Very beautiful work. I’m assuming the color corrections and other details are going to be the next phase…do you have some sort of worklist with projected finish dates? If so, could you share them?

Sanjuro made a nice color corrected version (https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Star-Wars-4K77-Regraded-No-DNR/id/64740) which should be up on the Spleen in a week or two, and I already made a cleaned up, somewhat color corrected, bluray version that’s been up on the Spleen for a while now.

Skydude is working on an improved DNR version, and DrDre is still working on his color corrected version, but I’m all done with 4K77 and 4K83.

I’m not working on 4K80 - or at least not yet, but Dreamaster is, along with a couple of other people. That will probably take at least another year or two though.

DL the file, streaming from my laptop > HDMI > 4K TV, I say it rolling on the screen got so pumped then a few minutes in, commentary started talking over the film, what in the world! What can I do about this?

Select a different audio track! How you do that will depend on the player, but in most cases you can simply right click and select from the audio menu. You probably want to use a different player though because it sounds like the one you are using can’t decode the DTSHD-MA audio tracks, which is why you are hearing the commentary track (the first Dolby Digital AC3 track). Switch to MPV, Media Player Classic (MPC), or Potplayer!

A little off topic, but can somebody please explain to me the difference between a hardcore and casual Star Wars fan?

The only real distinction is that a “hardcore” fan thinks the fact that they saw a silly space movie in 1977 makes them superior to someone who didn’t see it until 1997 or 2007 or – heaven forbid! – 2017.

If you like Star Wars, that makes you a fan. Anyone who tries to perpetuate some sort of hardcore/casual dichotomy is just acting on their insecurity in the silliest way imaginable.

While I don’t disagree with anything you just said, I would argue that a “hardcore” Star Wars fan could point out to you a number of key differences between the 1977 version, the 1981 version, the 1985 Audio mix, the 1993 THX masters, the 1997 Special Edition, the 2004 DVD and the 2011 Bluray. While a Casual (or new) fan probably wouldn’t know about these differences (or care).

Also I saw somewhere the folks that worked on 4k77 were going to take a stab at Raiders too, anyone have any info on that?

The Tn1 version is on hold for now. I do know somebody who has an original UK release of the film, which he describes as “a completely unfaded print on Fujicolor film stock”, but we will need to raise $1200 before we can go ahead with that. ($200 to rent the film, $50 shipping each way, plus another $600 to scan it, and at least $300 for Hard Drives to store it on.)

Meanwhile, 4K80 is still just getting started, so it would probably be a year or two before we can circle back for Raiders.

Well, I wouldn’t call this trivially easy, but here are two versions of the extra frame, color matched to the DNR and No-DNR v1.1. Looks like the No DNR version uses the actual film print, while the DNR version substitutes the shot from the blu ray.

It’s all relative: it’s trivially easy compared to restoring the entire film 😃 But you’re right, it’s still a fair amount of work, so thank you for doing that.

Actually they are both from the Bluray - the film prints are all missing a bunch of frames right here and it proved very difficult to transition from the film frames we did have to the bluray frames without it being obvious. So the solution was to replace the entire shot with the bluray, color matching it (and the cropping) to the film.

For the DNR version I just went back to the bluray again since I needed the version without the reel change markers (which were composited in to the no DNR version from the original film elements).

The cropping is different because the NoDNR version had been cropped to match the film in an effort to transition from one to the other, which wasn’t redone for the DNR version.

What shots from the Blu-Ray we’re used for 4K77, it says on the 4K77 page and I quote " Finally, about 400 frames that couldn’t be sourced from anywhere else at the time they were needed, were upscaled from the official Blu-Ray." I was wondering what scene interpreted these frames

Last shot of reel 3, first and last shots of reel 4, first and last shots of reel 5, first shot of reel 6.

Williarob - any chance of you posting the missing frame from the end of reel 5 color corrected to match the DNR version? It really bugs me that the US GOUT is missing this frame (and has become the site standard) and I’d like to be able to add it in to match.

I don’t have the files handy anymore - and I deleted all the bluray stuff. But it would be trivially easy for you to do yourself: Just take the shot straight from the bluray, color match it with Dre’s color match tool and drop it right in, replacing the existing shot and extending it by one frame. Since it’s coming from the bluray it won’t even need denoising and will fit right in. If you need it in 4K, you can grab infogition’s video enhancer software (now free) to upscale it.

Star Wars 4K77 - Regraded - No DNR (Released)

Incidentally: that 3 second uncompressed HD avi I was playing with was 450 mb. Compressed with h264 (CRF 17) it was 1.5 MB.

Lossless h264 version was 8 mb and the lagarith version was 30 mb.

Interesting experiment.

However we should probably get back to talking about what a great job Sanjuro did with his color correction… There is probably a thread in another section of the forum for discussing compression.
