Oh shut the fuck up already.
Whose fault is that we no longer have any film negatives that exist to restore the OT again? That we have to resort to secondary sources for restoring ONE OF THE LARGEST FRANCHISES IN MOVIE HISTORY?
You can't control what Lucas has done. You can control what you are doing...so stop posting the same thing over and over, and stop posting offensive things.
Hey, at least he's consistent, we can give him that.

The worst thread here continues to get worster...
Worster isn't a word, you moronist.
Please. Worster is a perfectly cromulent word that embiggens us all.
Cromulent is a word, though.

Why not release a ~3.5K version along with a 1080p? This is the real advantage of having the 35mm negs.
The majority of their scans are in 2k, I believe.
I can say this, at least: There will never, ever, ever be an official semi-specialized at least not intentionally. What I mean by this is they may fuck up an OUT restoration and inadvertently keep in SE elements (like the recomped speeders in ESB). But there is absolutely no reason to release a semi specialized version. There is much less market for that than the OUT. That also spits in Lucas's face much more than simply releasing the original versions- it would be denying him final cut privileges.

The worst of the PT/SE fans are lashing out against TFA teaser, which means they are scared.
This is the first I've heard of this.

I like both, actually. Makes the shot feel more like a '70s/'80s matte painting and less like CGI.
Granted, it doesn't make the shot look realistic, either, but still - I like the matte painting look.
I just thought of a silly idea for a fan edit--part of a fan edit, rather: putting fake garbage mattes around the various ships. Actually, it's got me thinking about ways one could old-ify modern effects.
Hey, throw in some matte lines too and I'd be all over that :)

This is having a ridiculous disproportionate I don't even know what. It was dumb when they made it, and it's dumb to try and save it.
That's like saying it's okay to not release Song of the South because it has dumb racist caricatures. It's just a product of both the times and the creator(s) at the time. It belongs in a certain context. I can't say that someone owes us the OUT and at the same time say that we should not restore the original version of Knick Knack. As stupidly over-proportioned as the mermaid is, that's part of what the short is. It may be dumb, it may be unrealistic, but it's important nonetheless.
Has Disney fucked up anything that's not inherently their's, though? I know they don't have a particularly good track record with their own works, but what about those that they've acquired?

Hi, i'm fairly new to all this as I just discovered these exist the other day. First of all, incredible job to Harmy and all the work put into this, this is an absolute godsend after what Lucas has done in the recent dvd releases.
My question is, what is the best way to view these on a TV? I don't have a disc burner and wouldn't know how to go about that, and apparently .mkv files do not work on a TV through a USB. I tried to convert the files into .mp4 but after about 13 minutes the video would just cut out.
Any help? My computer doesn't support HD video that well is all.
If you have a Blu Ray player and a DVD burner, you can burn the AVCHD version to a dual layer DVD and watch it on your BLu Ray player. If you only have a DVD player, then you should search around for the DVD 5 version and burn that to a DVD.
I love that Harmy card :)
The big problem I'm seeing with both that screenshot regrade and the video is flash tones- they all look very orange. Even Laurence Fishburn's character takes on a slight orange look. It just seems too unnatural. I guess that's just what gets lost when you try to bring that much red out of Superman's cape.

Properly scanned in 4K and cleaned up, what level of detail to these prints resolve to? DVD? Somewhere between DVD and Blu Ray? You've said that only by scanning from the negative could you get Blu Ray quality, but I figure the detail is still substantial.
EDIT: also, are you still keeping the reel change marks? Please say you're not.
Really good 35mm stock has about a resolution of 6K. I'm not 100% certain what resolution a release print would have, but best guess is much less. Besides an overall softness, however, you can get Blu Ray quality material from a properly scanned and restored release print, assuming it's a good print (see mverta's SW Legacy).
Those are insanely cool. My only gripe is the "W" on the outer sleeve, but I'm sure you have a reason for having it the way it looks.

3) We are not concerned with any future Disney release or supposed 4k version, as we have a vote of no confidence on any future releases from them.

I would love to see someone use Althor's LD caps and make BD-25s of the '97 SE. There's not much else out there, sadly.
Are his caps on the spleen?
I don't see them. Only his Japanese Phantom Menace. Are they supposed to be better than the TB or GKar caps?
I already have TB, I just want to check out the LD caps as well.

What? No mention of spiders? They happen to be the fiercest killers in the insect kingdom, I'll have you know.
They're not insects.

They would more likely just destroy it.

Dated cgi would look awful. Imagine the 1997 Jabba in HD...
Pretty much all the other CGI has stayed the same from the 97. It wouldn't look all that different from the 2011.
slask said:
(actually 1997 SE wouldn't look so good in HD).
Why?
The sky was redone for the 97SE. It was probably filmed somewhere in California just for the SE.
I mean, in the article he didn't really give any indication to what version it was- he just said there's an HD version where Han "shoots first". This doesn't imply SE or OOT, however.

If this thread were to be moved to Off Topic, which is a legitimate outhouse, then it would fit right in.
Thank you for using "legitimate" and not "literal."
That's literally legitimate. Now in 4K.
That print needs to make its way up to Oregon...
